This recent picture released by Swiss car maker Rinspeed shows people aboard Rinspeed's new model, the sQuba, the world'€™s first real submersible car that will be presented at the 2008 Geneva car show in March. The zero-emission electric sports car, with power supplied by rechargeable Lithium-Ion batteries, can perform a submerged stabile flight at a depth of 10 meters.

Off-road rules of going for a sQuba drive
By Stephen Adams

Weary commuters might fancy the idea of taking the river route to work in an sQuba, rather than suffering the fumes and congestion on Britain's stricken road network.

James Bond fanatic creates underwater car
The benefits are legion: no traffic, no traffic wardens, no parking tickets - just park it in the river, no one will notice.

Speed cameras won't be a problem either, not least because it only does 4mph on the water. The electrically powered vessel is even exempt from the central London congestion charge, Transport for London confirmed.

Unfortunately strict rules prevent submerged craft from operating in the Thames, according to a spokesman for the Port of London Authority (PLA).

He said: "It's a shipping lane. This would be a collision risk." And he warned: "The river bed is largely muddy so it could get stuck. Getting the AA out would be a problem."

But there are few restrictions along Britain's 10,500-mile coastline, according to Mark Clark of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. "In any harbour area the harbourmaster holds sway. But outside those areas, you would be able to try it out," he said.

Overseas, Swiss-based bankers could take it out in Lake Zurich, where Rinspeed first tested it, although it did not need a special permit. Mr Rinderknecht did not recommend it though. "The water temperature was about 4C and very murky," he recalled.

The crystal waters off Florida could be an ideal race track for petrol-heads - or propeller-heads.

But Dubai, with its warm, clear water, gently sloping sandy beaches and legions of multi-millionaires, is likely to be the place that sees the first sub-aqua traffic jam.

The world's first real submersible car has been designed by Swiss car maker
Rinspeed Inc. and will be presented at the Geneva Auto Show in March.

GENEVA -- So the Swiss have invented a car that runs on land and underwater. Was it really necessary to make it a convertible?

It's called the "sQuba," and conjures up memories of James Bond's amphibious Lotus Esprit from "The Spy Who Loved Me." That fictional vehicle traveled on land and, when chased by bad guys in a helicopter, plunged into the water and became an airtight submarine

Kereta amfibia pertama

The Spy Who Loved Me. Tetapi, kini sebuah syarikat Switzerland merealisasikannya.
