30,000 mini flags distributed nationwide

A TOTAL of 30,000 mini national flags of Brunei Darussalam are being distributed to vehicles, at various designated areas nationwide.

This was disclosed by Pehin Orang Kaya Ratna Setia Dato Setia Hj Abdul Hapidz Pehin Orang Kaya Laksamana Hj Abdul Razak, who is the chairman of the Sponsorship Committee for 'Majlis Pengibaran Bendera Kebangsaan Bersaiz Kecil Tahun 2008', during a ceremony to put mini national flags on vehicles held at the Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong, yesterday.

The event is an annual project and its the ninth of its kind being held since it started in 2000.

Pehin Dato Hj Abdul Hapidz said that, "Every year the response from sponsors and the public has been very encouraging."

He noted that for this year's celebration, the committee has received a very strong support from the private sector which, apart from playing an important role in the development of the local economy, also committed to work closely together with the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam by participating in national events such as the national day.

Pehin Dato Hj Abdul Hapidz stated that the Sponsorship Committee for 'Majlis Pengibaran Bendera Kebangsaan Bersaiz Kecil Tahun 2008' has successfully collected a total of $ 267,000 from various sponsors, excluding other contributions 'in kind'.

The guest of honour, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad Hj Daud, who is also the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the 24th National Day Celebration, 2008, then presented the mini flags to Dato Paduka Hj Md Yussof Bakar, and to representatives from other districts.

Out of the 30,000 pieces of the mini flags, 23,000 will be distributed to residents in the Brunei-Muara District, 3,500 in the Belait District, 2,000 in the Tutong District and 1,500 pieces went to the Temburong District.

For Brunei-Muara, Tutong and Temburong, the mini flags will be distributed at venues which have been designated.

In Brunei-Muara, the committee members will be at the Centrepoint and the Mall in Gadong to give away the mini flags to members of the public.

Tomorrow, they will be at the Hua Ho Department Store Kiulap and Hua Ho Mall Manggis, and then back at the Centrepoint and the Mall.

The committee is scheduled to be at the parking area at government departments on February 20, and at the parking areas in the capital during rehearsals for the national day celebrations, the following day.

Meanwhile in the Belait District the handing over of the mini flags was held at the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC) .

The guest of honour, Hj Mohamad Hj Abd Rahman, Belait District Officer, distributed the flags to the community leaders and village heads as well as representatives from the Brunei Shell Marketing Sdn Bhd.

He then proceeded to participate in the 4x4 convoy along with Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Sdn Bhd Deputy Managing Director, Hj Zainal Abidin Hj Mohd Ali, around Kuala Belait to issue the mini flags to the district's community.

BSP's support in the National Day celebration through its contribution to the sponsorship committee as well as participation of its employees in the mass gathering at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien on February 23, demonstrates the company's continuous commitment to the development of the nation.

IT was a juxtaposition of sorts yesterday morning as the nation's youth gathered at its capital to rehearse National Day performances.

The traffic almost crawled to a standstill as police blocked roads to facilitate the rehearsal. The nation's lifeblood, its youth, gathered from 65 schools nationwide took a step forward as they stood proudly and recited in unison the pledge that binds them together to uphold the nation as its 'budding future', translated from the theme this year 'Tunas Bangsa'.

Their commitment was accepted quietly by the denizens of the capital as they waited patiently for the city to resume normal operations.

Leading the pledge of allegiance is Hj Mahathir Hj Mokhtar, an education officer of the Core Curriculum Department, Ministry of Education.

"It is not easy to lead the recital, I have to put my heart and soul into the pledge. The meaning behind the pledge encompasses all of our future hopes and dreams and it is imperative that we as the youth of the nation understand its purpose," said Hj Mahathir reflecting on his responsibility as the chief reader of the pledge to The Brunei Times.

The rehearsal yesterday marks the culmination of weeks of practice and choreography.

Thousands of students and government personnel have been preparing for the coming day.

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad Hj Daud was generally pleased with the rehearsal as he remarked that the performance was satisfactory if not yet quite perfect.

There are three more rehearsals to come over the week hence there's still time to iron out the edges he said.

A number of tourists from the United States were impressed with the affair.

Chancing upon the rehearsal yesterday morning, they remarked on the students' tenacity. "There are so many students here," said one of the surprised but delighted tourists, who preferred to remain anonymous. The tourists were surprised yesterday morning as they did not know of the coming celebration.

They expressed regret as they will be departing soon and will miss the National Day.

Estimates are that close to 17,000 people will congregate at the Taman Sir Omar Ali Saiffudien to celebrate the 24th National Day this weekend.
