Okay. Novel "Out" ni berkisar tentang empat orang wanita yg tinggal di pinggir bandar Tokyo iaitu Masako, Yayoi, Yoshie dan Kuniko. Semuanya bekerja kat kilang buat makanan dlm kotak (boxed-lunch factory). Diorang kerja shift malam dan gaji pun tak seberapa, jadi masing2 dihimpit masalah kewangan.

Nak dijadikan crite, Yayoi bunuh suami dia, Kenji sebab dia tak tahan dgn ketagihan Kenji berjudi. Sampai sanggup habiskan duit simpanan diorang kaedahnya. Yayoi pun bagitau kat kawan dia yg paling rapat, Masako tentang pembunuhan itu.

Yayoi mintak tolong Masako supaya buang mayat Kenji dan dia offer bayaran 'upah' kalo Masako berjaya buat demikian. Masako dapat idea yg sangat brutal - mayat Kenji hendaklah DIKERAT-KERAT. Pastu bahagian2 badan akan ditanam kat tempat yg berbeza.

Bukan Masako sorang jerr yg buat kerja malapetaka ni. Dia ajak Yoshie agar turut serta membantu. Yoshie mmg desperate nakkan duit utk tanggung perbelanjaan anak dia masuk kolej, so dia tak kisah buat kerja potong mayat sekalipun, janji duit masuk. Kuniko pun tolong jugak tapi dia terlibat lewat sket la.

Yayoi terpaksa berlakon depan polis dan orang ramai kononnya dia tak tau Kenji hilang ke mana. Yg lagi tiga orang tu pun semua polis interview sebab rapat dgn Yayoi. Kerana kesilapan Kuniko yg bodoh pegi buang bahagian badan Kenji kat public park, polis pun jumpa.....pastu berlaku la macam2 konflik.

"Out" sangat bagus sebab berjaya menggambarkan betapa azabnya kehidupan golongan pertengahan kat Jepun, diorang terpaksa menderita dgn kos sara hidup yg tinggi. Negara maju tapi rakyat tetap susah.

Yakuza dan loan shark (kedua2nya ada dlm novel ni, watak PENTING) memainkan peranan yg besar dlm mengawal masyarakat urban/suburban Jepun.

Ada jugak part2 yg sedih dlm novel ni.

Natsuo Kirino (桐野夏生) (nom de plume, real name Mariko Hashioka), born in 1951 in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, is a Japanese novelist and a leading figure in the recent boom of female writers of Japanese detective fiction.[1] A prolific writer, she is most famous for her 1997 novel, Out, which received the Grand Prix for Crime Fiction, Japan's top mystery award, and was a finalist (in English translation) for the 2004 Edgar Award. In addition, Kirino received the 1993 Edogawa Rampo Prize for mystery fiction for her debut novel, Kao ni furikakeru ame (Rain Falling on My Face), and the 1999 Naoki Prize for her novel Yawarakana hoho [Soft Cheeks]. So far, four of her novels (Out, Grotesque, Real World and What Remains) have been translated into English. The latter novel, a violent tale of childhood abuse and sexual degradation, enjoyed a considerable readership in Japan; Kirino, however, has expressed doubts that it will do as well in the U.S. market. [2] Kirino also has written an installment in the Canongate Myth Series (concerning the myth of Izanagi and Izanami), to be published in 2009.
A Japanese film adaptation of Out, directed by Hirayama Hideyuki, was released in 2002 to generally tepid reviews. According to Variety (on-line edition), New Line Cinema has purchased the rights for an American version, to be directed by Nakata Hideo (Ring, Ring 2).[3]

I JUST finished shooting a film I wrote about young people. Not easy. Parents often wonder why kids turn out the way they do, so I had to write about them as well. Parents were once kids too so you抎 think they抎 understand a thing or two.


And of course they do. Sometimes.

But most times, things are a bit more complicated than they抎 like to imagine. In the deepest recesses of their hearts, there抯 always that fear that what they imagine may be true after all.

We are not talking about stereotypical images that we are already familiar with, where kids are ruined by drugs or sexual assault. Instead, it抯 about very comfortable teenagers flushed with material goods who are bored out of their skulls. They live in a fast world that pretends to have time for them. They are with us but feel left out. Time is their enemy.
After writing about murderous working-class women in Out and reminiscing about former high school friends-turned-prostitutes meeting their tragic end in Grotesque, Japanese writer Natsuo Kirino once again examines the lives and times of contemporary Japanese society.

This time the story is peopled by even more confused kids, the kind you already know from the media. But the truth is: you really don抰 know enough.

The story is told in a linear fashion, with each chapter told from a first-person perspective by a teenager. There are four girls and one boy. The girls are friends with one another and the boy is the neighbour of one of them. It抯 a hot summer and they抮e students of 揷ram school拻 (Gakushu Juku)
