Big surge in Chinese
secondary schools intake
A RECORD 16,125 students have
applied for admission into Chinese
independent secondary schools this
year, and 2,635 of them were turned
away due to the shortage of places.
There is a pull factor and a push
factor that contributed to a sharp
increase in the number of UPSR
school-leavers opting for independent
schools.
Jiao Zong (United Chinese School
Committees Association) said many
are drawn by the tertiary education
opportunities available to students
from independent schools as the Unifi
ed Examination Certifi cate, though
not recognised for admission into
public universities, are recognised
by local private institutions of higher
learning as well as universities overseas,
including National University of
Singapore.
Meanwhile, Deputy Education
Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said
he believed the switch back to the
use of Bahasa Malaysia to teach
science and mathematics is one of
the reasons for the sudden jump in
the number of UPSR school-leavers
applying for admission into Chinese
independent secondary schools.
According to a report in Sin Chew
Daily yesterday, the 60 independent
schools in the country have admitted
a total of 13,590 students this year, or
1,077 more than last year.
Another 2,635 applicants were
rejected because of a shortage of
places. Kuala Lumpur and Selangor
recorded the highest number of students
rejected.
While some schools admitted
students on the basis of fi rst come,
first served, a few picked only the
best.
The rush by parents to enrol their
children in independent schools,
where fees are not cheap, says a lot
about the quality of Chinese school
education.
Save for Penang, where there is
no lack of reputable national secondary
schools for parents to send
their children to, all states recorded
increases in intake by independent
schools this year.
Foon Yew High School of
Johor recorded the biggest jump
in intake with 1,180 students, or
280 more than last year.
But the school, which has a
branch in Kulai, also rejected a record
800 applicants this year.
In Kuala Lumpur, top schools
Tsun Jin High School, Chung Hwa
Independent School and Kuen Cheng
High School rejected 400 applicants
each.
According to the report, parents
who opt to enrol their children in independent
schools cited the dedication
of teachers, better discipline and
learning environment, and increased
opportunities for further studies for
independent school students.
A poll conducted last year
showed that in 2007, 80% of the
independent school leavers pursued
tertiary education.
It also showed that about a third
of them were admitted to colleges
and universities overseas, mainly
in Taiwan, Singapore, Australia and
China.

saya tak pernah baca sejarah usb drive tapi utk pendrive mmg ianya dari malaysia...saya mula pakai thumbdrive sebelum jenama pen drive popular lagi iaitu brand Trek dari singapore....cuma 128 MB ajer ketika itu...

dibawah maklumat mengenai Usb Drive dari wikipedia...

History
[edit] First commercial product

Trek Technology and IBM began selling the first USB flash drives commercially in 2000. The Singaporean Trek Technology sold a model dubbed the "ThumbDrive," and IBM marketed the first such drives in North America, with its product the "DiskOnKey" (which was manufactured by the Israeli company M-Systems). IBM's USB flash drive became available on December 15, 2000,[6] and had a storage capacity of 8 MB, more than five times the capacity of the then-common floppy disks.

In 2000 Lexar introduced a Compact Flash (CF) card with a USB connection, and a companion card read/writer and USB cable that eliminated the need for a USB hub.

In 2002 Netac Technology, a Shenzen consumer electronics company which claims to have invented the USB flash drive in the late 1990s,[7] was granted a Chinese patent for the device.[8]

Both Trek Technology and Netac Technology have tried to protect their patent claims. Trek won a Singaporean suit,[9] but a court in the United Kingdom revoked one of Trek's UK patents.[10] While Netac Technology has brought lawsuits against PNY Technologies,[8] Lenovo,[11] aigo,[12] Sony,[13][14][15] and Taiwan's Acer and Tai Guen Enterprise Co,[15] most companies that manufacture USB flash drives do so without regard for Trek and Netac's patents.

lain kali...kalau dah fakta, jgnlah deny:

Another lost talent from Malaysia - Pen Drive Founder Pua Khein-Seng

At the recent local newspaper, it has known that the founder of pendrive is a Malaysian. Yes, indeed, Malaysian is the one that invented the pendrive(a thumbdrive, usb flash memory, etc or whatever u named it), Mr Pua Khein-Seng, the pride and proud of an Malaysian Entrepreneur (click here for more info). I felt proud for the moment when I was reading the articles that how Pua made his way up when he started his company (PHISON ELECTRONIC CORP) in Taiwan while he was only 27. I googled around and search for his profile and I came out to a very ironic information (which i do not know how true it was), that Pua was a rejected student from the local university, and even though his proposal of his USB flash memory (pendrive) was also rejected by Malaysian authorities, and he was force to stay back in Taiwan to start his invention. a Malaysian Entrepreneur which was not in MALAYSIA.

Today, PenDrive or USB Flash memory, has revolutionize the era of floppy disk and storage in the world of computer. As an inventor, just only by receiving licensing revenues from different manufacturer would have made how many billions of dollars from around the world. However, the most ironic thing is this, it is claimed to be a “TAIWAN TECHNOLOGY” instead of “MALAYSIA TECHNOLOGY“. First of all, the technology is patented under a TAIWAN company, funded and invented in TAIWAN, hence, it is a TAIWAN TECHNOLOGY. This is just one “in your face” disgraced for MSC MALAYSIA, that has missed an opportunity to sparkle and polish Malaysian capabilities that all pendrive around the world is a MALAYSIA TECHNOLOGY. Apart from that, the millions and billions of dollars that has flown into the TAIWAN company which is worth RM4.1Billion, instead of a MALAYSIA company has really really sadden me off. Arggg…..I am so sad, so angry, the money, the pride, the proud~~ gosh, all gone to TAIWAN~! You can’t blame Pua. Now, whether is it for 1Malaysia, reporters has been running around to spot out entrepreneurs that has lost from malaysia, asking them, “Will you be coming back? do you still love your country? will you bring back your business?”, i think most will answered, yes, I love my country, i will be back. In terms of bringing back the business, hmmm, what will be the offer from the country? My business is well established out of malaysia, whats for the hassle to bringing it back?

I was wondering, if Pua managed to do this in Malaysia, will it be the same achievement as he has in Taiwan now? so? the pride, the proud or the shame?

kenapa lembu2 suka klentong tentang fakta?

Friday, July 17, 2009The man who invented USB Pen-Drive (Got it from an e-mail)S. INDRAMALAR speaks to the creator of the now indispensable Pen Drive

Fact file

Pua's mighty 'Pen'

Name: Pua Khein Seng
Age: 31
Hometown: Sekinchan, Selangor
Education: SJKC Yeok Kuan, Sekinchan; Pin Hwa Independent school, Klang; Chiao Tung University, Taiwan
Occupation: Engineer/ president of Phison Electonics Corp
Current base: Taipei, Taiwan
Years abroad: 12

WHENhe set off for Taiwan in 1993, Pua Khein Seng's only aim was tocomplete his degree in Electrical Control Engineering at the renownedChiao Tung University and return home to work in Malaysia.

Neverdid he envision himself heading a multi-million dollar Taiwanesecompany that developed the world's first USB flash removable disk, which they called Pen Drive.

Pua Khein Seng went to Taiwan toget his engineering degree but ended up staying on, starting his owncompany and inventing the pen drive.

"I went to Taiwan topursue my undergraduate degree. I chose Taiwan only because it was tooexpensive to study either in the United States or Singapore.

"However,I did well in my undergraduate programme and was offered a place to domy masters," explained Pua, who was back in Kuala Lumpur recently for aholiday.

After completing his Masters in July 1999, Pua workedfor about six months in a local company before deciding to set up hisown venture company with four fellow engineers who had studied with himat Chiao Tung.

"We were confident that we had the know-how andability to start our own business, which is focused on USB technology. The company is called Phison because there are five of us - twoMalaysians and three Taiwanese engineers," said Pua, 31, who hails fromSekinchan, Selangor.

Phison Electronics Corporation was set upin November 2000 and within six months the young entrepreneurs came upwith their first invention - a USB storage device called Pen Drive.

"Wewere the first company in the world to develop the USB Drive SoC(System On Chip) and we were very confident that the market for USBwill be huge. At the time, no one believed in us so we had to doeverything ourselves - from developing the technology, the chips to theproduct itself.

"We were only 27 at the time and inexperienced. But we were confident that we could design good systems and chips butwe didn't know anything about selling. So, we sought partners ortraders who could help sell our products for us," Pua added.

Throughsmart partnerships and shrewd strategies, Phison soon made its way intoEuropean, American and Japanese markets. One quick move was securingJapanese tech giant Toshiba as Phison's largest shareholder andcustomer.

"We launched Pen Drive in June 2001 and by August thesame year, we broke even! From September 2001, we were reaping monthlyprofits from our invention and there has been no turning back since."

Havingestablished himself in Taiwan, Pua is in the midst of setting upPhison's branch in Malaysia, due to begin operations this
February.

"I am starting a branch in Malaysia because this is my country. I would like to do contribute to its development.

"Wehave about 100 engineers at Phison in Taiwan, 20 of whom areMalaysians. Though they studied in Taiwan, I had to re-train all theengineers I hire because, like most fresh graduates (in this field),they are not industry-ready upon graduation.

"Unfortunately, some of the Malaysian engineers want to return home after a couple ofyears because they are homesick, about to start a family and so on.Some prefer to work in Singapore, as it is closer to home. Instead oflosing them to competitors, I decided to set up an office in Malaysiawhere they can still work for me," said Pua.

Another problemfaced by returning computer engineers from Taiwan, Pua added, was thelack of job opportunities for hardware engineers in Malaysia.

"Thereis no environment or support for design engineers here in Malaysia. Oneof my Malaysian engineers from Phison returned home and ended up as ateacher in a Chinese school! I was shocked and thought, 'After all thattraining and re-training, he is going to just teach?' I told him tohold on till I open up the Phison branch in Malaysia."

Though hehas been in Taiwan for the past 12 years and married to a Taiwanese,Pua is not sure how much longer he will remain there.

"I havereally no idea where I will be in 20 years. Maybe Taiwan, maybeMalaysia, maybe somewhere else ... it all depends on my business. Theindustry is moving so fast that I cannot predict what or where I willbe," he said.

For the moment though, Taiwan is home for Pua, his wife and two children even though he misses the Malaysian way of life.

"Icome home once a year for Chinese New Year and will usually stay forabout two weeks. There are several things I really miss about Malaysia. One is the food! For the past 12 years I have been craving forMalaysian food ... I miss laksa, curry noodles, chee cheong fun and allthe other delicious dishes we have here.

"I also miss thelifestyle and quality of life here. When I come back, I am alwaysamazed to see people hanging out and relaxing at mamak shops at night. In Taiwan, most people would still be at work at that time of the night!

"BeforeI got married, I used to work for 15 to 17 hours a day, everyday. Nowthat I have children, my wife has forbidden me to stay so late. Now, Igo to work at 9am and come home by 11pm. These hours are quite normalfor the Taiwanese."

The man who invented USB pen-drive is ayoung modest Malaysian who can't even get into a local University butinvented the most versatile, indispensable computer peripheral today. And helped his adopted country, Taiwan made $31bil in the process. Therest is history....

A successful and patriotic son warns that we are fast running out of time to make that quantum leap forward.

MANY of us have read about Pua Khein Seng (pic), one of the founders of Phison Electronic Corporation in Taiwan, not only because he is probably one of the most successful Malaysians living overseas but also because he has been the subject of numerous chain e-mail messages citing him as an example of what’s wrong with Malaysia.

According to these e-mail messages, Pua was “forced to go overseas” because of the “unfair education policies” practised in Malaysia as a result of the New Economic policies.

The authors of the e-mail messages claimed too that such policies had similarly chased away many other talents like Pua.

However, when shown copies of these e-mail messages, Pua rolls his eyes and shakes his head in disgust.

“I was never chased away but chose to go overseas myself. The moment I decided to go to a Chinese secondary school, I had decided to come to Taiwan,” he said in an interview in Taiwan recently.

“I was not angry with the government policy then. I was never the slightest bit upset. In fact, I would not be who I am were it not for the opportunity to come to Taiwan.

“Please stop using my name in such e-mail messages. I am proud to be a Malaysian.”
