What is a brain aneurysm? A brain (cerebral) aneurysm is a bulging, weak area in the wall of an artery that supplies blood to the brain. In most cases, a brain aneurysm causes no symptoms and goes unnoticed. In rare cases, the                 brain aneurysm ruptures, releasing blood into the skull and causing a stroke.
When a brain aneurysm ruptures, the result is called a  subarachnoid hemorrhage. Depending on the severity of                 the hemorrhage, brain damage or death may result.
The most common  location for brain aneurysms is in the network of blood vessels at the base of                 the brain called the circle of Willis.
What causes a brain aneurysm?A person may inherit the tendency to form aneurysms, or aneurysms may develop because of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and aging. Some risk factors that can lead to brain aneurysms can be controlled, and others can't. The following risk factors may increase your risk for an aneurysm or, if you already  have an aneurysm, may increase your risk of it rupturing:
  • Family history. People  who have a family history of brain aneurysms are more likely to have an                         aneurysm than those who don't.
  • Previous aneurysm. People who have had a brain aneurysm are more likely to have another.
  • Gender. Women are more likely to  develop a brain aneurysm or to suffer a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
  • Race. African Americans are more likely than whites to have a subarachnoid  hemorrhage.
  • High blood pressure. The risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage is greater in people who have a history of high blood pressure.
  • Smoking. In addition to being a cause of high blood pressure, the use  of cigarettes may greatly increase the chances of a brain aneurysm rupturing.
What are the symptoms? Most brain aneurysms cause no symptoms and may only be discovered during  tests for another, usually unrelated, condition. In other cases, an unruptured                 aneurysm will cause problems by pressing on areas in the brain. When this    happens, the person may suffer from severe headaches, blurred vision, changes  in speech, and neck pain, depending on what areas of the brain are affected  and how bad the aneurysm is.
Symptoms of a ruptured brain aneurysm often come on suddenly. If you have any of the following symptoms or notice them in someone you know, call 911 or other emergency services right away:
  • A sudden, severe headache that is different from past headaches.
  • Neck pain.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Sensitivity to light.
  • fainting or loss of  consciousness.
  • Seizures.

ps. Kena fikirkan cara mengatasinya ni...

Young mom dies unexpectedly – Neurosurgeon urges everyone to know brain aneurysm warning signs Jonathan Maes on May 4th, 2017

Brain aneurysms can feel like the worst headache you could possibly imagine, and if left untreated, they’re often fatal. So what exactly is an aneurysm? It’s a weakened spot in the blood vessel walls, which can causes bulges in the blood vessels. Aneurysms most commonly occur in the aorta, but brain aneurysms are common as well.

There are a few warning signs that can indicate a brain aneurysm.
  • An excruciating headache unlike you’ve ever felt
  • Overly and suddenly sensitive to light
  • Seizures
  • Constant feeling of nausea and the urge to vomit
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Drooping eyelids all of a sudden
  • A stiff neck in an instant
  • Feeling numb in the face
  • A remarkably sharp pain above or behind a single eye, like a stab
  • Losing consciousness
  • Seemingly hearing noises similar to explosions or gun shots
If you’re dealing with any of these symptoms or know someone who does, it’s extremely important to consult a doctor or a specialist. Not all headaches are the same and taking precautions saves lives.

I guess it is quite difficult to differentiate the presentation of brain aneurysm and stroke right?
From my reading last time..basically stroke is when u have diminished blood supply to the brain due to either blockage of the blood vessels to the brain or burst blood vessel of the brain (i think they call hemorhagic stroke)
So if the aneurysm ruptured, do we call it hemorhagic stroke too?

Here is what to do:
- stop smoking.
- stop recreational drug use.
- maintain a healthy diet and exercise.
- don't overexert or strain, which can increase blood pressure.
- control high blood pressure.
- be mindful of aspirin use as aspirin may prevent proper blood clotting.
- consider stopping the use of oral contraceptives.

Is a brain aneurysm a type of stroke?

Dr. Rafael Alexander Ortiz , Neurosurgery, answered

A brain aneurysm is not a type of stroke. A brain aneurysm is a dilatation of an artery of the brain that appears at a weak spot of the artery. A brain aneurysm can rupture and create bleeding in the brain (a type of stroke called subarachnoid hemorrhage).
A ruptured brain aneurysm (subarachnoid hemorrhage) is an emergency. There is a need for emergent treatment of the aneurysm by coiling (endovascular, less invasive) or clipping (craniotomy, brain surgery) to prevent re-rupture of the aneurysm. The person with a ruptured brain aneurysm needs to be admitted to the hospital and monitored in an intensive care setting (ICU) to prevent complications associated with the brain bleeding.

So if the aneurysm ruptured, do we call it hemorhagic stroke too?

Dr. Joshua B. Bederson, MD , Neurosurgery, answered on behalf of The Mount Sinai Health System

An intracranial aneurysm ("cerebral aneurysm," "brain aneurysm") is a protruding bubble or sac on a brain artery that balloons out over time. Aneurysms have thin, weak walls and have a tendency to rupture causing hemorrhage into and around vital brain structures.

yes. brain aneurysm sangat bahaya jika kita tidak treatnya dgn kadar segera selepas di diagnose. jika ianya ruptured, boleh menyebabkan kematian.

Kalau dah ruptured, sign and symptoms dia boleh jadi mcm ni:

Sudden, extremely severe headache
Nausea and vomiting
( both of this are very diagnostic features )
Stiff neck
Blurred or double vision
Sensitivity to light
Seizure
A drooping eyelid
Loss of consciousness
Confusion

Kalau still lagi unruptured aneurysm

An unruptured brain aneurysm may produce no symptoms, particularly if it's small. Tetapi, a large unruptured aneurysm may press on brain tissues and nerves, possibly causing:

Pain above and behind an eye
A dilated pupil
Change in vision or double vision
Numbness, weakness or paralysis of one side of the face
A drooping eyelid

jika ada ahli keluarga yg selalu complaining of headache and suddenly she/he developed severe headache/loses consciousness, please bring them to the hospital immediately. jangan lengahkan.

Real life story:

A doctor , she always complaining of mutiple attack of headache, tapi dia tak seek for medical advice sbb dia terlalu sibuk dgn kerja. one day, dia  develop sudden attack of headache while clerking the patient and she collapse in front of the patient. She was rush to emergency room, and investigations was done, she was diagnosed as ruptured aneurysm. newly married and she died one day later.

Take home message here: jangan main2 kalau selalu kena headache. Go and see the doctor! its better to prevent than cure.
How to prevent?
  • Don't smoke!!!! very very important. it may lead to other disease too. bukan aneurym shj
  • Eat a healthy diet and exercise. As it may help in lower the blood pressure.
  • Limit caffeine. as caffeine is a stimulant to sudden incease of BP
  • Avoid straining. mcm lift heavy weight.

If a brain aneurysm presses on nerves in your brain, it can cause signs and symptoms. These can include

    A droopy eyelid
Double vision or other changes in vision
Pain above or behind the eye
    A dilated pupil
Numbness or weakness on one side of the face or body

Seek Medical Attention Immediately If You Are Experiencing Some Or All Of These Symptoms:

Sudden severe headache, the worst headache of your life
    Loss of consciousness
    Nausea/Vomiting
    Stiff Neck
    Sudden blurred or double vision
Sudden pain above/behind the eye or difficulty seeing
    Sudden change in mental status/awareness
    Sudden trouble walking or dizziness
    Sudden weakness and numbness
    Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
    Seizure
    Drooping eyelid

Risk factors that develop over time
These include:

    Older age
    Smoking
    High blood pressure (hypertension)
    Hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis)
Drug abuse, particularly the use of cocaine
    Head injury
    Heavy alcohol consumption
    Certain blood infections
    Lower estrogen levels after menopause

If you have an unruptured brain aneurysm, you may lower the risk of its rupture by making these lifestyle changes:

Don't smoke or use recreational drugs. If you smoke or use recreational drugs, talk to your doctor about strategies or an appropriate treatment program to help you quit.
Eat a healthy diet and exercise. Changes in diet and exercise can help lower blood pressure. Talk to your doctor about changes appropriate for you.
Limit caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant that can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure.
Avoid straining. Sudden, forceful and sustained exertion of the type you expend when you lift heavy weights can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure.

Cousin sy pergi disebabkan "ruptured cerebral aneurysm" 9 thn lps. Masa tu dia dlm pertengahan umur 30an. Wife tengah mengandung anak ke empat. Tak pernah complains sakit apa2. Masa kerja tiba2 sakit kepala kemudian tak sedar diri lps beberapa minit. Sampai hospital buat CT brain nampak subarachnoid haemorrhage...sbb aneurysm dah pecah. Beberapa hari kat ICU salur darah lain kat otak semua spasm..brain death. Lepas 2 hari dia meninggal. Semoga roh beliau dicucuri rahmat.
Anak2 arwah dah besar dah skarang
Live your life to the fullest, x nak stress2
Tak lupa bekalan utk kita d sana nanti
