org len x bole access network kita kalau kita dh set kn SSID kita. SSID is service set identifier atau  nama untuk wireless LAN (WLAN) yg digunakan untuk identification purpose. in order to be secured your WLAN you need to

   1. Change the Default SSID!
   2. Change the SSID at frequent intervals
   3. Make sure you are not running an Open System
   4. Do not use very easy or identifiable SSID抯  ...

for regular users, this is really a hassle. even for tech savvy people. even once a day is too much for most people, unless the device itself can automatically do it for them (which means you have to cough up more money because devices with this feature cost more) - still people can hack because all they need is run a script that helps them break into your wireless network automatically. the best way for regular users for now is to turn on the encryption, WPA is better than WEP (WEP is very crackable). Also, turn off broadcasting of your SSID so that nobody can see it.

kat office so far belum stable lagi
jadi tak boleh nak komen
tapi memang prefer wired kalu kat opis

macam kat rumah aku ni..AP kat tingkat atas
kalu wired.....maknanya aku kena dok kat tiingkat atas jer la
tapi disebabkan kecanggihan teknologi yang dicipta untuk memudahkan diriku.....maka wireless adalah pilihanku
so sekarang ni....aku on jer AP kat atas.....aku buleh berada di mana2 dalam rumahku untuk access internet
risau takut jiran guna internet aku?
set la network key kat AP tuh

I love wireless tapi kat rumah saja laa :pompom:

tgklaa nak guna wireless utk kegunaan apa.

1- what happen if AP broadcast SSID? is this going to cause any harm?

2- i tested 2 APs and each had 1.91% and 0.81% bandwidth utilization. which one is better than another?

3- some APs grant their IP address and some don't. what's the different?

4- sape2 leh explain pasal signal strength and formula dia (dBm)?

thanks guys in advance...

before answering your questions, i think i saw these questions before... rasanya kat firewall forum. anyway, based on your type of questions, you should know about AP, or at least able to find answers on the internet. why? because regular users won't ask these type of questions. but, i try my best to help (don't forget to search and read before asking question as that's the best way to gain knowledge).

generally, it won't cause any harm. you're broadcasting it so that your wireless device can easily detect it. if not, you have to manually configure it. on the other hand, it may harm you, especially if there's no security being set on your AP (or your AP security is very crackable). when this happen, somebody with not so nice intention will be able to generate illegal traffics from your location. right now, there are two types of security on most APs - WPA (better) and WEP.

this question is not very clear as you don't mention if the bandwidth utilizaton results you got are for the APs or for devices connected to it. if for AP, the less the percentage the better (but depends on what kind of features the AP has also). AP without lots of built-in servers (such as dns, dhcp and printer servers) will use less bandwidth. so, if you need more built-in features, you have to give up more bandwidth (resulted in higher bandwidth utilitzation). but, for regular users, it should not really matter as you don't even feel it, especially when you have 100Mbps LAN connection.

3- some APs grant their IP address and some don't. what's the different?

AP that grants IP address has built-in dhcp server. for this one, it makes your job setting up local network super easy. you only have to configure the settings once, on AP itself. when devices connected to your AP, it will automatically be assigned an IP address appropriately and all settings from your AP will be propagated to those local devices.

AP that doesn't grant IP address, usually doesn't have built-in dhcp server (or dhcp server is disabled). for this, you have to configure each new device connected to your local network. if you have few devices, it should not be a problem. the good thing about this one is you have more control over your network security as each device must be manually assigned an IP address. you can even tie it to the mac address of the device (this way, if a device doesn't have a correct mac address, it won't get on the network even though it has correct IP address - you'll see that it looks like it's connected but it's not ).

signal strength, kalau nak cerita betul-betul memang panjang. so, kena pendekkan... yang lain you search on the net. untuk signal strength ni, the higher dB number the better. certain AP has certain signal strength. for example, an AP has 2dB signal strength. for this one, it will cover up to 50 meters radius. the closer you're to your AP the better the signal strength, and vice versa. if you're out of 50 meters radius, you'll lose the signal (or have very weak signal) which in turn disconnect your wireless device from your AP and you won't be able to get on the network. if the AP has 5dB signal strength, it may cover up to 200 meter radius, and so on. remember, these are just examples, so the numbers may not be correct.

wireless? Bagi aku inconsistency issue main peranan pada pengguna atau orang yg maintain (eg: planner, operator). Satu lokasi dapat service, ke depan sikit mungkin tak dapat, atau hari ni dapat dan mungkin esok dah tak dapat. Sebabnya kewujudan faktor noise. Pening gak nak layan ek.
