The following survey provides statistical data over the rate of failure of IT project.
The KPMG Canada Survey (1997)
In April 1997, KPMG Canada sent a survey questionnaire focusing on IT project management issues to Canada's leading 1,450 public and private sector organizations. The main purpose was to outline the reasons behind the failure of Information Technology projects.

Survey Scope
Out of 1,450 questionnaires sent, 176 were analyzed. Of these, 61 % reported details on a failed IT project.

Key Findings
Over 61 % of the projects that were analyzed were deemed to have failed by the respondents. More than three quarters blew their schedules by 30% or more; more than half exceeded their budgets by a substantial margin. Considering that an estimated $25 billion is spent on IT application development in Canada annually, the survey data clearly indicate that unbudgeted IT project expenditures must run into the billions of dollars.

Project tak meet user requirements.
User sendiri tak pasti diaorg punya requirements
Buat mega projects tapi delayed.Disebabkan tak meet some requirements,habis semua put on hold.

Projects that lack buy-in from top management are doomed, as are projects that lack ties with company objectives or that have no clear return on investment. Sometimes a shift in business priorities requires that certain projects be abandoned. But project mismanagement plays a significant role in many project failures.

list nie leh x kalo aku ckp antara  primary causes for the failure of complex IT projects:

a)Poor planning
b)Unclear goals and objectives
c)Objectives changing during the project
d)Unrealistic time or resource estimates
e)Lack of executive support and user involvement
f)Failure to communicate and act as a team
g)Inappropriate skills

yang ni salah satu la..
Project manager mesti pandai dan cekap handle resource yang ada. Tak kira la dari segi human resource atau hardware mahupun software.. Kalau bajet ciput, pandai-pandai la guna open source... jimat..

Bila dah kerja mana la tahu benda ni semua... Yg tahu, project tu siap dan boleh diguna atau tak...

1. lack of communication - project manager refuses to discuss with users ins- and outs of the expected results of the project and if users were given appropriate/enough time/resources to test it.
2. no trainings were given to the users to familiarize with the results of the projects or not enough trainings/time - especially for complex projects

bascially, #1 is the most important. project manager needs to understand users environment and how important trainings are. if users know nothing or very little of a project, it's hard for them to do their jobs efficiently. project manager needs to make sure they get enough trainings, understand the products ins- and outs so that they know what they are doing, and will be able to accept the system better.
