Salam,

Saya ingin bertanya la kalau ade sesape kat sini yg tau psl data server.

Camni citenya:

Kat opis sy ni ade 12 pc yg telah 'dinetwork'kn antara satu sama lain dan mndpt capaian internet mnggunakn d-link modem router. Soalannya : Bagaimana saya nak bg stiap user tu bleh access data dlm satu tmpat yg sama..

skrang ni sy just set kan satu pc biasa dimana smua data disimpan dlm pc tu, just sharing and full access..so smua user retrieve, edit or save keje dr pc tu. sy rasa lngkah ni btul cuma x prktikal je..

Kalau ada kwn2 disini yg tau camne nk solve problem ni tolong la share bersama.
adakah kena guna SERVER yg berharga ribu riban tu atau ada cara lain. At the same time sy nk backup data tu (mcm guna RAID 1 ke orait gk..)

Thanks a lot.

guna server OS... windows server 2003... intsall role server as file server.. and from that u leh kongsi file cam yg kau buat kat pc tu and leh control  rights every user...beli server yg murah2 aje...pc pubn bole... tak yah mahal2. sebab kau guna server as file server aje bukannya application server.. disebabkan user kau kat opis tak ramai.. so takde masalah performance laa.. aku punye user kat opis ada dalam 200 org.. ada 4 server..
raid technique guna untuk atasi masalah hard disk crash.. good if salah 1 hard disk kau fail.. then leh ganti hard disk.. tanpa data ilang...selain meningkatkan performance of the hard disk
aku suggestkan kau backup to another material... like tape backup.. and store outside of ur office... kalau berlaku kebakaran..data kau selamat... ok.. take care.. adios gonzales..

for 12 users, based on your description about your data server, it's practical enough. you don't need high end server to build data server for 12 users. make sure the pc you have is good enough to support those 12 users, especially when all 12 are heavily accessing data on the server at the same time. if it passes that test, you're set.

the only thing you need to spend your money right now is on backup and disaster recovery stuffs. for backup, use tape as it's cheaper. get a tape that's large enough in size to backup all your data on one tape at a time (plus any increment in data size for the next 3-5 years). then you need to think of backup software. if the os has backup software included, just use it. if not, find freeware or buy one. then, find an off-site storage for the tape(s).

for disaster recovery, raid is the way to go, and raid 1 as you mentioned is one of a better methods (if your server is not high end server, though inefficient as it has high overhead - 100% - usually use 2 disks). if you want to use raid one, you have to remember that you'll lose one disk (or half of the space) as it will be used as a mirror. but it allows you to maintain the data in case one of the disks is failed. but, what if the os itself is crashed? then you need to think of a way that will enable you to bring it to life faster than manually rebuild it from scratch. for this one, create an image of the os and put it on special partition on the server (also save them on discs). this way, when the os crashes, you can rebuild it by typing one simple word, and the server will be up and running again in 30 minutes. when you do this, it's best to put all data on its own partition.

1. you can use norton ghost.

2. well, the best backup software are very expensive and usually an enterprise version. the best one usually allows you to restore single file, or even single email (instead of the whole backup media/folder/inbox). oobi guna enterpise version of brightstor (computer associate product) and used to use veritas netbackup and backup exec (both are own by symantec now), love it a lot. in your case, it's really up to you. xp has built-in backup app, you may want to try that. as for cheap/free product, oobi never really pay attention to that. try google or go to www.download.com. when you do backup, run it overnight, when nobody's using the server. so, it's important to find a product that has this feature and able to restore file/data to different location too (especially if you have to restore data/file during business hours). however, if the data on your server can fit in single dvd, you can just use dvd to backup the data.
