In the movie Body of Lies (Lakonan Leonardo DiCaprio), Ed Hamilton [CIA ops manager] said to Hani Salam [supposed Muslim]:
"Now you’re the guys who founded Algebra but we’re the guys who figured out how to use it"
It struck me because it's true. |

When Khwarizmi founded Algebra, supposedly he didn't know how to use it? It's absurd. Khwarizmi is not like Isaac Newton. When Isaac Newton founded gravity, he didn't even know how it works, and yet hailed as the god of physics?  |

What the quote meant to say is although a Muslim scholar founded such beautiful concept, it is the West who vigorously applied it into various knowledge fields i.e. engineering, physics, economics etc.
As boastful as they are, the statement is, to some extent, true. Muslims today are just buyers/users of western (or in some cases, eastern) made engineering wonders. We have fast cars and skyscraper, but just how much of the fraction are made by us? Most Muslim countries survive on god-given wealth - OIL.
It is time to revert this, and let them not mock us no more.

Indeed many mathematical concepts were created without the creator knowing the usefulness beforehand. For example complex number i = sqrt(-1) was founded in 1545 which everyone at that time despised, only to find out centuries later that it is widely benowned in electromagnetism, quantum physics and chaos theory.
Isaac Newton formularized his Laws of gravity. What is gravity? He didn't know. We don't know either (scientists are still debating). What's clear is that his formulas are applicable in wide instances today, withouth having him knowing what was it good for in the first place.
Today we have many new discoveries/theories. What are the real purposes? The future will tell us. And let the discoverers/implementors be us!

utk topik ni...cuba rungkaikan keadaan ni.....
zaman kita ni agak ketinggalan dari segi penemuan....
kenapa....setakat saat ni...kita hanya menggunakan penemuan2 dari zaman2 dulu...
tiada penemuan sains baru(breakthrough) dlm sains selepas teori2 besar, pencambahan2 aliran ilmu selain sains, sastera, matematik...
dlm erti kata lain takde cabang ilmu baru. apatah lagi ilmu sains...tak banyak penemuan baru atau idea untuk teori baru....
kita hanaya menggunakan apa yg org lain susah payah utk jumpa...dan senang2 guna. kembangkan kegunaanya dan menjadi lebih hebat....sedangkan ilmu tu baru sedikit yg kita tahu.... |

partly agreed. dr segi penemuan benda2 baru maybe susah la sikit. tp dr segi understanding dan application tu mmg banyak.
I would say new discovery/theory penting, understanding of new/old discoveries/theories pun penting, new application based on understanding of new/old discoveries/theories pun penting.
misal nya contoh cahaya. alhazen dikenali sebagai father of modern optics for his early contributions in optics. then, other scientists followed including the one that I like the most, James Maxwell for his theory of electromagnetism. Based on their discoveries, engineers are able to develop i.e. optical sensors and optical telecommunication. and my favorite latest one, scientists are trying to develop a invisibility cloak based on understanding of light manipulation. amazing huh?
mmg penemuan2 terbaru tu hebat tetapi applikasi kesan daripada penemuan2 dan pemahaman2 teori2 dan penemuan2 terdahulu pun tak kurang hebatnya. yang penting kita ingin juga belajar bagaimana teori2 dan penemuan2 terdahulu boleh diapplikasi kepada kehidupan seharian kita. untuk memudahkan perjalanan hidup kita.
