Interchanges are great! Why? Because unlike standard intersections, they allow free flow of intersecting roads rather than having to stop at traffic lights or roundabouts. But sometimes interchanges can be extremely complicated with many junctions and even several levels (those are called stack interchanges). Such a complicated interchange is sometimes nicknamed ”Spaghetti Junction“. Take a look at these photos of mind-blowing interchangesand it will become very clear why..
Puxi Viaduct, Shanghai, China
Perhaps the only stack interchange in the world with six levels, this huge interchange of Nanbei Road and Yan’an Road is located in Puxi – historic center of Shanghai.
Gravelly Hill Interchange, England
Gravelly Hill Interchange is THE Spaghetti Junction. The nickname which now refers to every complicated junction, originated in an article 1965 regarding the plans to build this junction, which later opened in 1972. The interchange is located in Gravelly Hill area of Birmingham.
Tom Moreland Interchange, Atlanta, Georgia
The Tom Moreland Interchange is also nicknamed “Spaghetti Junction” by the locals. This junction is a stack interchange at the intersection of Interstate 85 and Interstate 285, northeast of Atlanta, Georgia. The interchange opened in 1987.
Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange, Los Angeles, California

Kennedy Interchange, Louisville, Kentucky
Located at the intersection of Interstates 64, 65 and 71, in Louisville, Kentucky. Opened in 1964, the interchange is named after the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge located just to its north.
Interchange of I-695 and I-95, Baltimore County ,Maryland
Intersate 695 (I-695) is a 51.46-mile-long (82.82 km) full beltway intersate highway extending around Baltimore, Maryland, USA. I-695 is officially designated the McKeldin Beltway, but is colloquially referred to as either the Baltimore Beltway or 695. The route is an auxiliary route of I-95, intersecting that route southwest of Baltimore near Arbutus & northeast of the city near White Marsh. It also intersects other major roads radiating from the Baltimore area, including I-97 near Glen Burnie, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Maryland Route 295) near Linthicum, I-70 near Woodlawn, I-795 near Pikesville, & I-83 in the Timonium area. The 19.37 mile (31.17km) portion of the Baltimore Beltway between I-95 northeast of Baltimore & I-97 south of Baltimore is officially Maryland Route 695(MD 695), and is not part of the Intersate Highway System, but is signed as I-695. This section of the route includes the Francis Scott Key Bridge that crosses over the Patapsco River. The bridges & its approaches are maintained by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MdTA) while the remainder of the Baltimore Beltway is maintained by the Maryland State Highway Administration (MDSHA).
Higashiosaka Loop, Osaka, Japan
