Mungkin tabu kita mendengar jika ada kegiatan sunatan terhadap gadis remaja. Biasanya, anak gadis sudah disunat saat masih kecil.

Disebuah desa, sekitar 80 kilometer dari kota Marigat di Baringo County, hal ini terjadi.Sekelompok masyarat yang berasal dari Suku Pokot melakukan ritual penyunatan terhadap gadis remaja.

Tubuh mereka ditutupi dengan kulit binatang. Mereka disuruh duduk dibebatuanm selama uacarta berlansung.

Kemudian, seorang wanita tua Pokot melakukan sunat pada seorang gadis di sebuah beberapa gadis. Penyunatan tersebut hanya menggunakan sebuah pisau silet biasa yang dugunakanuntuk mencukur kumis.

Setelah disunat, tubuh mereka dilolesi cat putih. Kemudian mereka ditelanjangi dan tubuh mereka dicuci.

Setelah itu, barulah kaum adat menggiring mereka pada sebuah tempat untuk beristirat.

According to the UN, most Kenyan women went through the rite of circumcision, although it is officially banned by the government in 2011. Despite the fact that the rite of female circumcision is considered a threat not only to health but also life, many Kenyan women, especially those from poor families still have to adhere to this centuries-old traditions of his people.

An African Female Circumcision Ceremony

Reuters photographer Siegfried Modola gained access to a circumcision ceremony in rural Kenya for young girls of the Pokot tribe, in Baringo County.
The traditional practice of circumcision is a rite of passage that marks the transition to womanhood and is a requirement for all girls of the tribe before they marry.
More than a quarter of girls and women in Kenya have undergone genital cutting, according to United Nations data. Despite a government ban on the life-threatening practice since 2011, the long-standing tradition remains a rite of passage for girls, particularly among poor families in rural areas.
