Mum can't persuade son, 9, to go for circumcision ceremony. Until he
Yes man, but can we have kuda kepang dancers?
*(traditional Javanese dance)
By Zubaidah Nazeer

November 28, 2006

IT had the trappings of a lavish Malay wedding: Colourful crowds at the void deck, a day's feasting and traditional dancers.

But instead of a groom, there was just an 8-year-old boy, regally dressed in purple Malay attire - complete with headgear and a replica keris (traditional sword).

Beside him, a pretend 'bride': His sister, 6, in a purple baju kurung and a tiara.

Yesterday afternoon, the duo paraded around their Choa Chu Kang Drive block, in a procession featuring 30 traditional dancers.

--Hedy Khoo
CHILDISH 'PRICE'

The entire two-day affair cost $8,000 and was organised by the boy's mother, Ms Suryana Rahmat.

As she explained to The New Paper, it was young Muhd Danial's 'price' for going ahead with his circumcision.

All Muslim boys are circumcised before reaching puberty, but he had told his mother that he was too scared.

Yesterday, Ms Suryana, 27, recalled: 'We had been persuading him to do this for a few years but he kept saying 'No' because he was too scared.'

But then, 'some weeks ago, before Hari Raya, he suddenly said he was all right with circumcision, but he had some conditions.'

And what conditions!

Circumcision is usually accompanied by prayers at home and food served among family members.

In the kampung era, after a circumcision boys would often be treated like princes and paraded around the village. But such ceremonies are now rare.

Still, Muhd Danial wanted the traditional pomp of a wedding celebration to extend over two days, with relatives as guests, complete with the traditional Javanese horse dance known as kuda kepang.

A kuda kepang performer mimics the movements of a horse. He or she straps on props shaped like a horse.

Yesterday, gongs were struck and the performers also carried out rituals like whipping themselves and eating glass.

INSPIRED BY WEDDING PHOTOS

Why a wedding, and why the dance?

Said Ms Suryana, a just-divorced hotel reservation clerk: 'He was looking through my wedding photos and he saw a kuda kepang performance picture. He was so curious and kept asking about it because many Malay weddings don't do this any more.

'Then he said he had one wish: to see a kuda kepang performance during his 'sunat' (circumcision). Since it was so difficult to get him to say yes to sunat, I decided to grant his wish.'

She added: 'I don't think there will be another chance for him to see this because I don't know if I'll remarry and have this sort of ceremony.'

Also, she said Muhd Danial seldom asked for anything expensive.

The kuda kepang troupe cost $900 to hire for the whole day. The feast cost $6,000, for 600 guests.

Ms Suryana, whose two children and parents live with her in her five-room flat, was divorced from her husband of 10 years in March this year.

She said yesterday's ceremony was also 'my way of telling people not to pity me... I have moved on with my life and we, as a family, are coping fine.'

She and her parents shared the cost of the ceremony.

Even after the 'deal' was struck, it took three trips to a clinic before Muhd Danial was finally circumcised.

The first time, on 18 Nov, he took fright and hid behind the door to the doctor's room, not budging till he was assured the procedure would not be done then. His second attempt, last Tuesday afternoon, ended in tears.

It was third time lucky that evening at the same clinic.

Said his mother: 'I told him, 'You said you want to be the man in the house, you have to 'sunat'. So he told me, 'yes' because he wanted to take care of me and his sister.'

Planning for the bash then began.

The kuda kepang group was hired through Muhd Danial's grandfather's contacts. The main cook was his grandmother's friend.

His grandparents and aunts stayed up till late for three nights to prepare the food.

Said Madam Rabyah Walijo, 56, Muhd Danial's grandmother: 'It's a good thing he finally agreed to do this sunat. Since he is my only grandson, we thought why not have something for him to remember.

'Besides this is a chance for us to gather family and share our joy with them with a feast.'

ONLOOKERS

Saturday's celebrations were at home. Yesterday's more public activities went on for most of the day.

Onlookers started gathering as soon as the kuda kepang performers started beating their gongs and dancing, around 11am.

Some 40 to 50 people watched the performance, which went on till 6pm. People from the opposite block were also peering out.

At 2pm, Muhd Danial and sister Qistina Nuruljannah, 6, walked around in front of the block, in between the performers.

One neighbour, Madam Munah bte Talib, 47, lingered an hour with two grand-daughters.

She said: 'This reminds me of kampung times when something like the sunat was done with so many traditions and customs.'

After his 'parade', Muhd Danial was mobbed by eager young cousins, who jostled to take pictures with the prince of the day.

Said his grand-aunt, Ms Murtini Mohd, 31: 'Danial is a sweet boy who doesn't ask for a lot of things. I think his mother just wanted to shower her love on her only son.'

The boy, who is in Primary 3, does not realise how much all this is costing his mother. 'I don't know how much,' he said. 'Mama said okay. I'm just excited to see the kuda kepang .'

When he was asked about his circumcision, he grimaced, saying: 'It was painful, but I didn't see any blood. I'm okay now. I can take care of Mama because I am the boss of the house.'

Ms Suryana may have to deal with her daughter next.

She said: 'Now she's asking me for a big celebration for her birthday!'

This show's usually put on for weddings

CIRCUMCISION is the surgical removal of the foreskin.

It is something every Muslim male must undergo as he is about to reach puberty and is considered a symbolic transition from boyhood to adolescence.

The kuda kepang dance is now seldom associated with circumcision.

The leader of the group which performed yesterday, Mr Riswan Ahmad, 55, told The New Paper that it was their first performance for a sunat or circumcision ceremony in a long time.

His group was founded in 1977.

They do up to seven performances a year, all for weddings.

In the kampungs of the past, it was common to find circumcisions being celebrated in this way, with kuda kepang performances.

The circumcision was done by the village's traditional healer, also known as a tok mudin.

The day before the rite, the boys were treated like princes and paraded around the village in an elaborate procession.

The boy usually donned an outfit as grand as that of a bridegroom and after his procession, he would be seated on a pelamin (a dais similar to the one used in a Malay wedding).

There could be a dikir barat (Malay choral singing), marhaban (hymns in praise of Prophet Muhammad), silat or kuda kepang performances like what was seen at Muhd Danial's.

Nowadays, most parents send their boys to doctors in private clinics to be circumcised or opt for after-birth circumcisions.

And they may hold small ceremonies in their homes, with group prayers being recited after the boy is circumcised.

But only kerosene lamp glass please
By Zubaidah Nazeer

WATCHING him chew glass would make you grimace. But kuda kepang performer Rosmaini Bahtiar, 29, does not flinch.

Although his tongue gets small cuts from the broken glass, he declares he feels nothing as he stuffs shards of glass into his mouth and chews gingerly.

After each mouthful, a group member whips him hard with a 3m-long whip.

Yesterday, the unusual show was staged as part of a kuda kepang (traditional Javanese horse dance) performance at a circumcision ceremony here.

The show began around 3pm and lasted some three hours. Four performers took turns to chew glass - each performance lasting up to 45 minutes.

Glass chewing is part of the ritual of some kuda kepang performers. This Javanese ritualistic dance is usually performed at weddings or palace gatherings, said group leader Riswan Ahmad.

The Singaporean, who runs a food stall in Choa Chu Kang, learnt it from Javanese friends in the '60s and now coaches those interested in the craft, like Mr Rosmaini.

PRAYERS, INCENSE SMOKE
Before chewing glass, Mr Rosmaini had to utter some prayers, breathe in and 'swallow' incense smoke and then chow down bits of flowers and grass.

He does so while wearing his horse costume.

As his group mates beat a gong, he cocks his head from side to side to its steady rhythm with eyes closed and mouth busily chewing.

Next, he is whipped after each mouthful he chews. Doesn't he feel pain when he chews glass?

No, he said.

'The pain only sets in after the performance. During the dance, I feel no pain, nothing.'

But is it real glass, or is it sugar?

Mr Rosmaini, a full-time syce (a groom or stable hand) chuckled at this.

He said: 'Not sugar! It's the real thing. It's glass and yes, we swallow it. Not painful if you have been properly trained and you have a good leader.

'Most importantly, you have to have the faith to do it.'

The glass, he said, is from traditional kerosene lamps which they get from Indonesia. He said they could not find them here.

'No particular brand, just so long as it is kerosene lamp glass,' he added.

Group leader Riswan begins the dance by chanting some prayers to bless the performance area before his group-members start dancing.

Said Mr Rosmaini, who joined this kuda kepang group only two years ago: 'This chewing glass is not for everyone. Only those that the headman thinks can control themselves when they go into a trance, can do this.'

He said only 10 of the 30-strong group can do it.

Mr Rosmaini usually avoids spicy food after his glass-chewing feat to avoid the 'piercing pain'.

'After the performance, I usually drink a lot of water because it is so tiring,' he said.

Mr Rosmaini, a Malay of Javanese descent, said this performance is not restricted to Javanese people. He does it every two to three months.

Said Mr Riswan: 'We do not do the glass chewing unless the hosts want it. It's done more for crowd entertainment. Usually when you mention kuda kepang performance, the crowd expects these antics too.'

Though Mr Riswan stopped performing 14 years ago, he still coaches and watches over his group.

He notes that not all kuda kepang groups do the rituals nowadays. Most just do the dance.

In a 2001 Berita Harian report, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore was quoted as questioning the ritualistic practices of kuda kepang and saying that some of these, like being in a trance, chewing glass and being whipped without feeling pain are unIslamic.

Sebagai satu cara ikhtir seramai 50 orang rombongan ahli Darussyifa' yang di ketuai oleh Tuan Guru Dato' Dr. Haron Din telah pergi ke bangunan tersebut pada hari Ahad, 16-April-2006. Ahli rombongon pergi ke bangunan tersebut dengan sebuah bas yang disediakan oleh syarikat ini dan tiga buah kereta, sampai kira-kira pukul 7:00 petang. Sebelum Majlis Solat Hajat, bacaan Yaasin & Zikir dimulakan, Tuan Guru menyampaikan ucapan terlebih dahulu, antara lain dalam ucapannya menyebutkan seperti berikut;
