SHAH ALAM: The iconic Shah Alam Stadium may be demolished and replaced with a new building due to major structural defects which have left the premises unsafe.
However, this will only be ascertained after the findings of a special committee put together to look into the situation, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said in a tweet on Wednesday (June 29).
He added that whatever reconstruction is done on the Shah Alam Stadium complex at Section 13 here will also involve the nearby Malawati Stadium. “The... rebuilding of the Shah Alam Stadium will be announced soon," said Amirudin.
The stadium, the venue of many memorable football matches for almost three decades, has a capacity slightly over 80,000. Sources say if a new structure is put up, it will be a modern building with a smaller capacity of between 30,000 and 40,000 for easier management. The current six-storey Shah Alam Stadium, which was opened in 1994, has suffered various levels of damage over the years with its massive size being a possible factor.
In an interview th The Star last year, Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had spoken about the stadium’s sorry state. The Ruler had said its reconstruction must be in tandem with the planned adjacent LRT station which is still lagging behind.
He added that the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah had asked if the stadium could be demolished and rebuilt exclusively as a football stadium. “I have no objections to the stadium being demolished for it to be better but the name must be maintained," he had said.
