REELTIME: Battle of the local movies

GET ready for the most competitive three months at the local box office when 11 movies battle it out for the box-office gold.
The battle begins on Oct 7 with the release of horror comedy Jangan Pandang Belakang Congkak 2, produced by MIG Productions.
It is the sequel to last year's hit Jangan Pandang Belakang Congkak that made RM6.1 million at the box office.
On Oct 21, romantic comedy Cuti-Cuti Cinta, starring Farid Kamil and Nora Danish opens. The movie is also produced by MIG Productions. Both Jangan Pandang Belakang Congkak 2 and Cuti-Cuti Cinta were directed by Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri.
Estet, a musical love story between an Indian girl and a Malay boy debuts on Nov 4.
The movie, was directed by Mamat Khalid, was jointly produced by Naga VXS Sdn Bhd and Perkasa Filem Sdn Bhd.
The week after, on Nov 11, Crayon, a drama directed by Dean A. Burhanuddin opens. The film stars Adibah Noor in the lead role and is produced by Zioss Films Sdn Bhd.
Malaysia's most hyped movie, 2 Alam, produced by dR Movie Productions opens on Nov 18. It was jointly directed by Hairie Othman and Ed Zarith.
Producer Datuk Dr Che Rozmey Che Din is confident the horror flick will collect RM40 million at the box office.
A horror comedy on the evils of the lottery, Ngangkung produced by MIG Productions opens on Nov 25. The film was helmed by first-time director, Ismail Bob Hasim. The movie has Malaysia's rising actor, Shaheizy Sam in the leading role.
The success of a Singaporean movie, I Not Stupid a few years ago, prompted Prime Work Studio and MM2 Entertainment to make a Malaysian version.
The film Aku Tak Bodoh, directed by Boris Boo, opens on Dec 2 and targets a young audience.
The year's third horror comedy, Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah, directed by Mamat Khalid opens on Dec 9. The sequel to 2007's Zombi Kampung Pisang is produced by Tayangan Unggul Sdn Bhd.
On Dec 16, MIG Productions unleashes Aku Masih Dara directed by Ahmad Idham.
The religious themed movie touches on three girls' perception of virginity.
Horror flick Janin, directed by Mohd Hitler Zami and produced by Prime Work Studio opens on Dec 23. And making the last entrance is Damping Malam, a horror movie directed by Ahmad Idham and produced by MIG Productions.
The film opens on Dec 30 and stars Ahmad Idham, Amy Mastura and Izlan Yusof.
Last year, six of the 10 local movies screened during the same period tanked.
The six are Duhai Si Pari-Pari, Muallaf, MySpy, Pulau Asmara, Jalang and Lembing Awang Pulang Ke Dayang.
They were outshone by box-office winners Papadom that made RM3.3 million, Pisau Cukur (RM2.3 million), Senario The Movie Episod 2: Beach Boys (RM3.1 million) and Santau (RM3.5 million).
Meanwhile, KRU Studio's Magika collected more than RM1.5 million after a week in the cinemas.
The musical comedy, directed by Edry Abdul Halim, was helped by good word of mouth and rave reviews from the media and bloggers. The film is expected to make at least RM2.5 million during its entire run.
The two Hari Raya Adilfitri movies -- 4 Madu and Senario Asam Garam -- collected RM1.9 million and RM2.9 million respectively.
Directed by associate professor Abdul Razak Mohaideen, 4 Madu is jointly produced by Line Clear Motion Pictures and Grand Brilliance Sdn Bhd.
Senario Asam Garam, produced by MIG Productions, was directed by Dr Hatta Azad Khan.
