Silva - scored Valencia's winner.
SILVA'S THE HERO FOR VALENCIA
Valencia's relegation concerns were all but ended by a steadydefensive display as David Silva's first-half strike ensured a crucialvictory against fellow strugglers Real Zaragoza on Wednesday.
A humiliating 6-0 defeat at Barcelona on Sunday had left the Copadel Rey winners just two points above the relegation zone, howevertheir second clean sheet in 14 games proved vital as they held ondespite Silva's dismissal with five minutes remaining.
Los Che's victory was the team's second in three games sinceSalvador Gonzalez replaced Ronald Koeman last month and has all butassured their safety as they sit five points clear of the drop zonewith two games to play.
The news is not so bright for Zaragoza who remain in 16th place - just a point above the bottom three.
Valencia have come under fire from their fans this season followinga league-worst home record of just five wins in 17 games prior toZaragoza's visit to the Mestalla.
Equally star striker David Villa's commitment to the team has comeinto question with speculation surrounding his possible departure toReal Madrid in the summer.
But the Spain international proved his attacking threat early in thegame forcing Zaragoza goalkeeper Cesar to save from close range, beforepulling a shot wide minutes later.
It was an impressive start from the home team and they were rewardedfor their early dominance with a goal in the 19th minute when RubenBaraja crossed for Silva to slot home from 12 yards.
Silva was proving a handful for the visiting defence and had thechance to score a second seven minutes later, only to direct his headerover the crossbar.
Villa came even closer to doubling his side's advantage on thehalf-hour mark when he struck a left-footed shot from 12 yards as LosChe attempted to settle the game early.
They were, however, dealt a blow three minutes before the break whenmidfielder Vicente was forced off the pitch with an injury to bereplaced by 20-year-old forward Juan Manuel Mata.
Zaragoza had been an absent threat as an attacking force in theopening half but gave the travelling fans some reason for hope soonafter the restart with Sergio Garcia at least forging a shot, albeitwide of the left-hand post.
Carlos Marchena then headed over from close range for Valencia, butZaragoza's improving fortunes almost yielded an equaliser whenhalf-time substitute Pablo Aimar headed a Gabi corner off target.
Gabi then tried a speculative drive from 35 yards as the home side were forced to endure some nervous moments in defence.
In the 75th minute Luis Miguel Brito gave away a free-kick forhandball in a dangerous area, but the defender cleared the danger fromFrancelino Matuzalem's resultant free-kick with a header to safety.
Zaragoza's best chance to draw level came from a dead-ball situation 10 minutes from time after Ivan Helguera had fouled Aimar.
Gabi stepped up to take the free-kick and his effort force TimoHildebrand to make his first meaningful save, tipping the shot over thecrossbar.
The hosts were forced to endure further moments of anxiety whenSilva was shown his marching orders five minutes from time after beingbooked twice in a minute.
But the 10 men held firm and almost grabbed a second when Villa forced Cesar to block a goalbound effort late on.

Player Ratings: Valencia 1-0 Real Zaragoza
VALENCIA
Hildebrand 6 - Had very little to do which must have made him happy after showing his fury at letting in six at the weekend.
Miguel 7.5 - A strong performance from the full-back, who still had the legs to make a break forward in the closing minutes to nearly score.
Albiol 7 - Was steady in a defence which was very well protected by the Valencia midfield.
Helguera 8 - Showed all his experience when keeping Oliveira at bay and his organisation was outstanding.
Alexis 7.5 - Considering just how quiet Zaragoza were kept, he still stood out at attacking set pieces.
Marchena 7.5 - Had a strong game in front of the back and four and showed why he is so important to los Ch |

LEVANTE 1 VALENCIA 5
Valencia ensured their survival in the top flight thanks to this emphatic win featuring a hat-trick from Spain striker David Villa.
Villa struck twice inside the first half hour, before neighbours pulled one back through a deflected free kick from Jose Serrano. Villa laid on his side's third for Juan Mata, his rebound set up Miguel Angel Angulo for the fourth and he then wrapped up the win with a fine breakaway strike a minute later. |

VALENCIA PAIR PREPARED TO LEAVE
Valencia players David Villa and David Silva have confirmed they are willing to be transferred in order to ease the club's financial difficulties.
Spain star Villa is set to be one of the sought-after signings of the summer, with a host of clubs across Europe reportedly interested.
Spanish newspaper Marca claimed earlier in May that Real Madrid would be prepared to pay Villa five million euros a season to join the Primera Liga champions, plus a transfer fee of 40 million euros which would double the price Valencia paid Zaragoza for Villa in 2005.
Silva, meanwhile, is rumoured to be the target of a 20 million-euro offer from Internazionale.
Valencia are said to be in financial turmoil following their early exit from the Champions League this season, and were helped little by the reported eight million euros they paid in compensation to Ronald Koeman when the Dutch coach was axed in April.
It is believed the club is yet to find a kit sponsor next season and has failed in a bid to sell off their stadium, and move which was predicted to generate 90 million euros for the club this season.
But both players have admitted that if a bid comes in that suits the club they would be ready to leave.
"If the best thing for the club is to get some money and sell me then I'll accept that," Villa told Marca.
"As players we're at the disposal of the club."
However he warned any potential suitors: "I have a long contract, a big release clause and I signed it to fulfil it.":pompom:
Silva echoed his team-mates comments, saying: "I'm very happy at Valencia but in football you never know what might happen and I'm at the disposal of the club.:pompom:
"My future will be whatever is best for Valencia."
Villa has scored 21 goals in a season to forget for Los Che this year, while Silva has found the net eight times. |
