Book signing and reading by Shirley Geok-lin Lim from her second novel, Sister Swing (which was launched in Hong Kong earlier this year) at 5.30 pm on Saturday 25th March 2006 at Silverfish Books, 67-1 Jalan Telawi Tiga, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur. Professor Lim Chee Seng from the English Department of the University of Malaya will host the event.


Sister Swing chronicles the growing up years of three sisters. It follows their transplant from a relatively sheltered life in Malaysia to the raw realities of the United States. It illuminates the complex relationships between the sisters, and gently but firmly explores the morals, values and mindsets of growing up Asian in a Western world.

Shirley will read excerpts from her book, answer readers questions and sign books.

Professor Shirley Geok-lin Lim received her Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Brandeis University in 1973.

Shirley Lim is Professor of English and Women's Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara and currently a visiting professor at the University of Hong Kong.

Her first collection of poems, Crossing the Peninsula, was awarded the Commonwealth Poetry Prize. Her memoir, Among the White Moon Faces, won an American Book Award for non-fiction. She was the editor of The Forbidden Stitch: An Asian American Women's Anthology which also won 1990 American Book Award. Her poetry has also been featured in a Bill Moyers PBS special on American poetry.

She lives in California.

The Embassy of Ireland, in partnership with the management productivity company, IMPAC along with The Star newspaper, is organising an essay competition for young Malaysians. Supported by the Ministry of Education Malaysia and sponsored by IMPAC as well as the Irish Universities and Medical Schools' Consortium, St. Patrick's Society of Selangor and the Malaysian Irish Alumni Association, this contest aims to encourage young people to express themselves creatively in the English language.

In 1995, IMPAC, in collaboration with the Municipal Government of Dublin City, established the world's richest book prize. This prize is awarded to the author of a work of fiction written in English or translated into English. Dublin was chosen to host this prize on account of the city's rich literary heritage. IMPAC is now involved in organising young writers' awards in a number of countries.


Topic : "If I could change the world"
Write either a factual or fictional account inspired by this topic.

Essay language: English

Length of essay: 800 - 1,200 words

Eligibility: All Malaysian students aged between 14 to 18 (as of 31st March 2006)

Closing date: 31st March 2006

Prizes:

Rules & Regulations:


Entries must contain the participant's full name, I.C. number, address, telephone number, e-mail address (if any) and name of school.
Judging of the entries will be based on originality, creativity and structure of the essay. Essay should be written or typed double-spaced on A4-sized paper.
All decisions made by the panel of judges and matters pertaining to the contest are final. No correspondence will be entertained.
Proof of posting is not proof of receipt.
The Star reserves the right to photograph any winner and publish and/or use the names, particulars and photographs of the participants and their essays at any time, without prior notice or consent. The participants agree to indemnify the Organiser against all loss, costs and claims if the participants entry (entries) infringes the copyright of any party.

Favourite fictional character writing contest

Aspiring young writers aged between 12 and 16 years are invited to participate in a writing contest organised in conjunction with World Book Day 2006.

They have to write a short story about their favourite fictional character and it should not exceed 1,000 words. The work must also be original and only one entry per student will be accepted.

Co-organised by the Embassy of Spain, Instituto Cervantes, Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka and MPH Bookstores, the deadline for entries is on April 23.
