Tribute to Liam Miller
Liam Miller was born in Cork, the same Irish city as his idol, Roy Keane. Miller joined Glasgow's Celtic as a 16 year old youth player in October 1997 and eventually made his league debut for them in the final game of the 1999/00 season as a substitute against Dundee United. He had to wait until 2003/04 before being elevated to the top team on a full-time basis. Former Celtic defender Marc Rieper took him on loan to AFG ?rhus in 2001/02, and he made 18 appearances during his spell with the Danish club.
On his return to Scotland the Irishman was a revelation last season, especially in the Champions League where he produced a number of man of the match performances. He scored on his Champions League debut for the Bhoys, against FBK Kaunas in the 2003/04 second qualifying round, and played all four qualifying matches as Celtic claimed a place in the group stages of the competition. He then started the season in the first team and netted again against Olympique Lyonnais.
In January 2004 he signed a pre-contract agreement with Manchester United will head to Old Trafford in the summer. An official announcement came after Sir Alex Ferguson persuaded the 22-year-old to join the Premiership champions rather than agreeing a new contract with Celtic.
A slight, but strong-running midfield player, Liam Miller is blessed with good pace and a high level of stamina. Dubbed the new Roy Keane because of his workrate, strength in the tackle and goal-scoring record, the 22-year-old Miller joined the Red Devils in July 2004 after the two clubs agreed a pre-contract deal.
"We recognized the potential of Liam, he has had a great season at Celtic," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "He is very much part of our progressive thinking of developing a young team over the next few years." In his first season however, United fans were disappointed by Liam as the step up from Scottish football proved tough.
He was unable to stamp his authority in midfield, seeming lightweight, most notably against Exeter City in the FA Cup 3rd round which ended an embarassing 0-0 draw and much criticism. Though composed and confident on the ball and capable of scoring a few goals, Miller is definately not Roy Keane 'quality'. The search for a new midfield general will have to continue for Sir Alex.
tapi dia gi Sunderland...to play for Keano :cak: |

SUNDERLAND SNAP UP SIX
Posted 31/08/06 22:28
Sunderland boss Roy Keane beat the transfer deadline on Thursday night to sign Liam Miller from Manchester United and David Connolly from Wigan - their fifth and sixth signings of the day.
Keane snapped up former Old Trafford colleague Miller on a free transfer, with the 25-year-old midfielder agreeing to a three-year contract at the Stadium of Light.
The deal looked to have completed a busy day for Keane, however Wigan then announced that striker Connolly, 29, had also moved to Sunderland, for an undisclosed fee and without terms being made public.
Both players, like Keane, are Republic of Ireland internationals.
Keane, unveiled as the Wearside club's new manager on Tuesday, had earlier signed Dwight Yorke, Graham Kavanagh, Ross Wallace and Stanislav Varga. Kavanagh is another to have played for the Republic.
Yorke's was the first deal finalised by the Coca-Cola Championship strugglers, who won their first match of the season on Monday, after five defeats.
The 34-year-old striker - who played with Keane in United's treble-winning side of 1999 - joined from Australian A-League side Sydney FC.
Terry Butcher, Yorke's coach at Sydney and a former Sunderland manager himself, said: "It's sad to see Dwight leave.
"He is a great player and a tremendous personality to have in the team and he has worked very hard since I came to Sydney to be in shape to play."
Keane then completed a move for 32-year-old Wigan midfielder Graham Kavanagh - a former Republic of Ireland international midfield team-mate.
The former Middlesbrough, Stoke and Cardiff player signed a three-year deal for a fee of ?500,000, having left the Ireland squad preparing for Saturday's European Championship qualifier with Germany in Stuttgart.
Later in the evening news of the double deal for Celtic pair Ross Wallace and Stanislav Varga was revealed.
In a combined deal potentially worth more than ?1million, Scotland Under-21 midfielder and Slovakian international defender Varga moved to the Stadium of Light.
Keane spent the second half of last season with Celtic.
Wallace, a 21-year-old midfielder who can also play in defence, will strengthen a left side of the Sunderland side which has been depleted by the departures of George McCartney and Julio Arca to Barclays Premiership West Ham and Middlesbrough respectively.
Varga, a 33-year-old central defender, rejoins Sunderland three-and-a-half years after he left Wearside for Parkhead.
