Albelda: A Captain Is Not Always The Leader

David Albelda has stated that he does not mind who is appointed as club captain of Valencia for the new season, but thinks it does not have to be the team leader.

Los Che are set to hold a squad vote on who should wear the cherished armband and Albelda has different ideas from coach Unai Emery about the requirements for the role.

Having been captain of the team, Albelda believes that sometimes just experience is enough and that leadership skills can be used without having to be the skipper.

"At times the captain is not the leader of the team. Sometimes the captain is there because of his seniority, not because of his character," he said.

"It is not important who wears the armband, what is important is that the team is going along the right path. Anyway, I think that we are all captains."

Raúl Albiol is a name being touted as a favourite for the role and Albelda understands that the young central defender has the attributes required.

"He is young, Valencian, a member of the Spain squad, he has lots of potential and is used to be a regular. He will spend many years here," he continued.

"I am going to vote because if I leave my vote blank then I do not have the right to any opinion."

Coritiba star Keirrison reveals Valencia contact

Coritiba star Keirrison has revealed he's in talks with Valencia.

The 19 year-old, who has also been linked with Real Madrid, told AS: "I know that Valencia are interested in me, this is an honor. There I'll find my compatriot Renan, with whom I shared the experience of the Olympic Games.

"Then there's David Villa, one of the best strikers around. I would be happy to go and play in the Liga, which is perhaps the most beautiful championship in the world."

Marcos Malaquias, Keirrison's agent, is due in Valencia next week for talks.

UEFA Cup Preview: Maritimo – Valencia

What: UEFA Cup First Round, 1st leg
Who: Maritimo (Portugal) v Valencia (Spain)
When: Thursday, September 18 (22:00 CET)
Where: Estádio dos Barreiros, Funchal, Portugal

Valencia commence what, in the second half of last season, seemed an unlikely foray into European competition for 08/09.

However, the dreadful thundercloud of Los Che’s La Liga campaign was lined in silver with triumph in the Copa Del Rey.

The last time Valencia took part in the UEFA Cup was one of the most memorable and successful season’s in the club’s history.

In 2004, Rafa Benitez’ team lifted the cup along with the La Liga title. The trophy cabinet was kept firmly shut until Los Che overcame Getafe in last season’s Copa final, and the club will be eyeing up the possibility of another UEFA crown this time around.

The squad has more than enough quality to succeed though Champions League qualification via the league, as would be the case for any big club in Valencia’s position, is the primary target for the season ahead.

Their Portuguese opponents and hosts for this first round, first leg encounter finished 5th in the BetWin Liga last season.
Maritimo, the biggest club in Madeira, last competed in Europe and the UEFA Cup in the season after Valencia lifted the famous trophy.

Lori Sandri’s islanders side welcome the Spanish giants amid tough times, with the team so far unable to manage a single point or goal in their two domestic fixtures to date. Chairman Carlos Pereira recently spoke in hopeful, nay bullish fashion about his beloved club’s chances, but it looks a tough ask.

Valencia are hardly without their own problems, not least with the long term injury to David Silva, while there are still a fair number of kinks in tactics and individual performances for young coach Unai Emery to iron out.

The combination of injury concerns, the still visible lack of continuity in the team’s play – most evident in Valencia’s unconvincing 2-2 draw at Almeria last weekend – as well as the desperate need to get into the group stages, means Emery will field a strong side in Portugal.

Thanks to the goal of Morientes, Valencia CF won the first leg game in the first UEFA Cup qualifier at the CS Marítimo stadium. This is the first victory of Valencia CF in Portugal in European competitions. Our team won for his quality and for the constant work and great attitude in all the lines. There were five new players in the line-up, necessary rotations to give the team a fresh new air. The rain and the conditions of the pitch didn’t help our team, which suffered some problems in the second half. But finally, the victory was for Valencia CF, which began the qualifier with a positive result.

Match details

CS Marítimo (0): Marcos, João Luiz, Fernando Cardozo, João Guilherme, Miguelito, Bruno, Olberdam, Briguel, Marcinho, Pedro Moutinho (Bruno Fogaça, 56) and Lelo (Manu, 58).

Valencia CF (1): Renan, Miguel, Alexis, Helguera, Del Horno, Albelda, Edu (Manuel Fernandes, 69), Pablo, Angulo, Morientes (Villa, 76) and Zigic (Mata, 64).

Goals: 0-1, Morientes (12).

Referee: Claudio Circhetta (Switzerland). He booked Edu, Renan, Helguera, Albelda, Pablo Hernández, Villa and Olberdam.

Comments: Dos Barreiros Stadium. Att: 3,000. UEFA Cup first round first leg clash.

Emery: No Risks With Villa

Valencia coach Unai Emery admits that he will not take any major risks with David Villa for the game against Osasuna on Sunday.

“Villa is an important player but we cannot take major risks,” said the coach.

“I have full confidence in him but I will not take any gambles. If he feels comfortable then he may play.

“We have to make the best out of what we have. Injuries happen in football and we have to deal with them.”

Time’s Up For Timo

Valencia’s unsettled goalkeeper, Timo Hildebrand looks set be on his way out of the club after a falling out with coach, Unai Emery.

Hildebrand’s Mestalla future had been on the rocks a few weeks ago after he continually refused to play second fiddle to newcomer Renán Brito.

The 29 year old German had looked certain to cement his place as the team’s first choice goalkeeper following Santiago Cañizares’ retirement. But a shocking display in the second leg of the Supercopa against Real Madrid consigned the former VfB Stuttgart man to a bench role as Emery attempted to re-motivate him the hard way.

But Timo effectively shot himself in the foot and wiped out any possibility of a second chance when he refused to accept the coach’s decision.

According to Sport, the shot-stopper apparently sniped at Emery: “Rather than being a substitute, it’s better if you don’t call me up at all.”

Emery, ofcourse, did exactly just that when he dropped Hildebrand from the squad completely for the first two league games and then against Marítimo in the UEFA Cup in midweek.

The Valencia board are understandably unwilling to let the issue fester and risk yet another blow-up in the dressing room and they are reportedly considering their options to have him off-loaded during the winter transfer window.

Outsiders Villarreal and Valencia share top spot in Spain

Valencia lead the standings on goal difference after a late Juan Mata goal downed ten-man Osasuna at the Mestalla.

Mata struck seven minutes from time for the breakthrough after Osasuna had been reduced to ten men with Cesar Azpilicueta received his marching orders just after the hour for a second booking.

"Being top is not that significant as there are various teams with seven points," said Valencia coach Unai Emery.

"The most important thing for us is that we are improving and collecting points from difficult games like this one.

"We knew it was a test of patience because Osasuna are hard to open up."

Four teams are locked on seven points at the summit with Almeria continuing their great start to the season with a 1-0 home victory over Malaga.

Alvaro Negredo struck on 74 minutes with the decisive goal and undefeated Almeria join Espanyol, Villarreal and Valencia at the top.
