Liverpool's Crouch warns Benitez

Peter Crouch has told Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez he needs to be playing more next season in order to retain his England place.

The former Southampton striker is currently part of Fabio Capello's squad, but he is unhappy he failed to feature regularly last season. Crouch started just nine Premier League game last term and has hinted his future could be away from Anfield unless he is given a more prominent role. "I have spoken to Rafa. I have to play more games if I want to stay in the England set-up," he told the Daily Star Sunday. "I didn't play enough last season, that's for sure. "I need to play more at club level to be able to play at international level. You have got to be noticed. "I need to play more games. I didn't get enough and it's something I have to look out for, for next season."

Liverpool winger Ryan Babel could miss pre-season after tearing ankle ligaments training with Holland on Saturday.

The 21-year-old, who risked exclusion from Euro 2008 after leaving his homeland last summer against Marco van Basten's wishes, was set to feature against Wales in Rotterdam on Sunday.

But he will now require an extensive period of rehabilitation which makes him a doubt for the start of the build-up to the new campaign.

Babel has been replaced by forgotten Chelsea defender Khalid Boulahrouz, who spent last season on loan at Spanish outfit Sevilla.
