Two extra sets of tyres for Sepang practice

Pirelli's Paul Hembery believes that, instead of the general two or three-stop strategies which were seen in Australia two weekends ago, Formula 1 teams may be forced to make three to four pit visits in the upcoming race at Sepang. Furthermore, not one but two additional sets of tyres will be available on Friday.

“We were absolutely thrilled by our Grand Prix debut in Australia, but we're aware that Malaysia should be a very different proposition, with higher temperatures and increased degradation,” the Pirelli Motorsport Director explained on Monday morning.

“We said all along that we would be seeing two to three pit-stops in Australia, but in Malaysia I think that figure is likely to increase to three to four. They say that it's never a question of ‘if’ it rains at Sepang but ‘when’, so the performance of our Wet tyres could be crucial this weekend and we're certainly looking forward to seeing them out on-track.”

He went on to explain that two extra sets of tyres will be made available per car for Friday free practice, with drivers then being left with the usual six sets to last for both qualifying and the race.

“We never believe in standing still at Pirelli, which is why the teams will have two extra sets of Slick tyres available to them during Friday's free practice sessions for evaluation purposes,” Hembery continued.

“With testing not allowed during the season, this gives us a valuable opportunity to gather more data and feedback, while it also gives the teams an interesting taste of what could be coming in the future.”

Pirelli considering microchips for tyres

F1 tyre supplier Pirelli could soon place microchips inside its products in order to enable more detailed analysis, with the Milan-based manufacturer having returned as the sport’s sole supplier this year. Its current contract runs until the end of 2013.

“We’re constantly looking at all sorts of different technologies because we are a very innovative company and another reason why we are in Formula 1 is to push the envelope of what is possible,” Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery explained to GrandChelem.it.

“Microchips are certainly one possibility for the future, as they provide the capability of processing complex information rather than simply storing basic data, as is the case with the current bar codes.

“But naturally we are also aware that we are new to Formula 1, so at the moment our priority is to get the basics right before we move onto more advanced methods of data capture.”

Round 2: Malaysia

So, after a result which combined normality with a selection of surprises in Melbourne, the 2011 Formula 1 rollercoaster tumbles into Kuala Lumpur for what promises to be a wet weekend of action. And even if showers don’t affect proceedings, Sepang could still be the setting for more unforeseen dramas…

The opening race weekend of the season confirmed what we all already knew: that the Red Bull-Renault, Adrian Newey-Sebastian Vettel combination is deadly. Interestingly, though, the evolution of last year’s double title-winning car didn’t seem enough to stop Mark Webber finishing some 38 seconds behind his team-mate.

Unsurprisingly, the internet conspiracy theories have already begun, such as, ‘Did Red Bull fuel Webber’s car heavier to allow for a Vettel victory?’ Of course they didn’t…losing Constructors’ World Championship points in such a way would be nothing short of outrageous. Although one does have to question why there was such a significant gap between the two drivers’ performances – and even Mark yet know the final answer to that.

What is official is that the team has made a number of fundamental changes on Webber’s car for this weekend, so if that doesn’t negate the differential then some serious head scratching really will be going on…and it’s also hard to imagine that AussieGrit – as he is affectionately known on Twitter – will have taken lightly to Christian Horner’s Monday comments about a Vettel-Hamilton driver pairing being unlikely due to such high calibre. Furthermore, the Team Principal claimed that is why Red Bull’s current driver configuration works so well…

Who would have believed the McLarens would be right up there at Albert Park, as well? That just cemented the theory that anything really can happen in Formula 1, no matter how much you know or how long you’ve watched it. Had it not been for Button’s ineffectiveness to back off after passing Massa by skipping inside Turn 12, we could have seen Woking cars second and third. But now it’ll be interesting to see if they can keep it together on a track which demands superb mechanical grip and fantastic downforce.

At Ferrari, the focus has all been on qualifying. They easily recorded the most laps in winter testing so, even though we knew Red Bull were plain quick, it was hard to understand how the highest-placed red car could be almost one and a half seconds off Vettel’s first pole lap. The raw potential is there, though; just look at the fastest lap classification for Melbourne – Massa heads that from Alonso and the two Red Bulls.

Which leads us to the very back of the grid, if that. Even if on the face of things inter-team moods are good at Hispania Racing, no ‘miracle’ (as it was put by Colin Kolles after Australia qualifying) was going to get them into the action on Sunday. Their pre-Malaysia press release quotes the boss as saying such an occurrence won’t happen again although, with plenty of long straights and fast sweepers, you could say it’s not worth unpacking the containers…though a rain dance could be just what the doctor ordered because inclement Malaysian weather in Q1 may do the trick.

Now for a bit of trivia. Since 1999 we’ve had 12 races at Sepang – just a stone’s thrown from Kuala Lumpur International Airport – and on six of those occasions the pole-sitter has gone on to taste champagne on the top step. So that’s a 50/50 situation as to whether gaining the top spot really is an advantage. It’s also interesting to note that, in the two soaking wet races we’ve had in Malaysia (2001 and 2009), that year’s World Champion took the chequered flag, even though in Jenson Button’s case it was taken sitting on the grid waiting for a possible restart.

Further down the order, Petrov and Renault are highly keen to prove that Melbourne was no fluke and we should also reserve judgement on Nick Heidfeld; too many fans and insiders alike criticised the German prematurely in Australia – he in fact did a respectable job of finishing 12th with a broken KERS and gaping hole in the right sidepod, thanks to substantial contact from Sébastien Buemi’s. That said, ‘Quick Nick’ cannot afford another race like that if he’s hoping to keep his well-earned reputation in racing circles alive.

Toro Rosso and Force India head into this weekend fifth and sixth in the championship although it would be a safe bet to assume that Sauber will eclipse them as dusk falls on Sunday. Incredibly, before the Hinwil squad’s Australian disqualification for rear wing irregularities – which came down to millimetres and didn’t affect their performance – they’d already scored more points than in the entire first half of the 2010 campaign.

Also, Williams are clearly – and unintentionally – hiding their true potential. Struck by double transmission two weekends ago, South Americans Barrichello and Maldonado should also be in the shout for their first points of the 2011 season. Despite their recent improvement, though, Williams’ days of a 2002 1-2 finish in Malaysia must feel like a long, long time ago.
