Arsenal-Liverpool Player Ratings

Arsenal:

Manuel  Almunia: 7

The Spanish goalkeeper made a great save off a fierce Babel drive five minutes from time.

Emmanuel Eboue: 6

Was tidy in possession and kept Arsenal's shape on the right.

William Gallas: 7

Looked a shaky at the beginning but steadied himself as the game wore on. Made a game-saving tackle off Ngog in the 53rd minute.

Thomas Vermaelen: 7

Had one of his easier matches for Arsenal against an impotent Liverpool attack.

Gael Clichy: 7

His overlapping runs kept Liverpool pinned back in their half and also did well when he was called upon to defend.

Cesc Fabregas: 8

Pulled the strings again for Arsenal and he helped set up Arsenal's goal.

Alex Song: 7

Worked his socks off as he kept Gerrard quiet whenever the Liverpool skipper ventured into Arsenal's territory.

Abou Diaby: 7

Worked well with Song to form a midfield screen and proved to be just as effective when he charged into the Liverpool box to head in the winner.

Samir Nasri (off 34th min): 5

Did not do anything of note until his substitution.

Nicklas Bendtner (off 82nd min): 6

Given the sole attacking role in the centre and proved to be a handful for the Liverpool defence with his off-the-ball running. Was unlucky to be booked for diving when he was clearly tripped by Agger.

Andrey Arshavin (off 68th min): 5

The little Russian was wasteful with possession and when he had the goal in his sights, he always chose to shoot instead of passing to a better placed colleague.

Subs:

Tomaz Rosicky (on 34th min): 7

Gave Arsenal more attacking impetus after coming on for Nasri. Fired a superb cross to find Diaby for Arsenal's winning goal.

Theo Walcott (on 68th min): 6

Did not see much of the ball after coming on.

Bacary Sagna (on 82nd min): 6

Came on to add steel and help steady the Arsenal defence which he did.

Liverpool

Pepe Reina: 6

Did not really had much to do and was hardly to be blamed for Arsenal's goal.

Jamie Carragher (off 53rd min): 5

He was again wasted at rightback. Was subbed early in the second-half after suffering a groin strain and cut lip.

Martin Skrtel: 5

Was caught ball-watching a couple of times and failed to pick up Diaby's run in the lead-up to Arsenal's goal.

Daniel Agger: 5

Was lucky to escape conceding a penalty when he brought down fellow Dane Bendtner in the box.

Emiliano Insua: 5

Another toothless display and was hardly a attacking factor on the left.

Lucas (off 78th min): 6

Given more license to push up to join the attack with Mascherano behind him. Had a half-chance early in the second half but he blasted the ball over the bar.

Javier Mascherano: 6

Followed Fabregas everywhere he went and prevented him from being settled on the ball. Was again the crucial destroyer for Liverpool in midfield.

Dirk Kuyt: 5

Liverpool's regular goalscorer in their last five games but he played like he needed a rest.

Steven Gerrard: 6

Tracked back frequently to help the defence with last-ditch interceptions - which meant he was supporting the attack.

Maxi Rodriguez: 5

Showed a couple of nice touches, had a couple of weak shots on goal but did nothing else of note.

David Ngog: 5

Was always fighting a losing battle on his own up-front against Gallas and Vermaelen. Had a great one-on-one chance in the first-half but he hesitated to allow Gallas to make a recovery tackle.

Subs:

Philippe Degen (on 53rd min): 5

Showed great energy, not so in his overall play.

Ryan Babel (on 78th min): 6

His introduction gave Liverpool a much-needed boost in attack. He could have saved a point for Liverpool after he created a chance from nothing but found Alumnia in great form.

Fabregas denies Barcelona deal

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has denied suggestions he has agreed to join Barcelona next season.

Reports emanating from Spain have claimed that Emirates captain Fabregas has reached a verbal agreement to join the Catalan giants in the summer.

Barcelona moved quickly to rubbish the rumours and now the midfielder has put the record straight on the speculation, insisting he is totally committed to the Gunners.

"They have denied it, I have denied it. I just want to focus on Arsenal," Fabregas told Sky Sports.

"I think Arsenal Football Club is above everything, every single player in its history and their fans, and the club, and myself - I think we deserve a little bit more respect."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger also quashed talk that the Spain international was on his way to Camp Nou.

"Nothing plus nothing is nothing," said Wenger.

However, Fabregas' father has claimed his son would be open to holding talks with Barca at the end of the season

Fabregas Snr believes his son would consider any offer the Spanish giants made him but insisted he would not think about moving on while he is fighting for the title with Arsenal.

"If something has to happen - we will see at the end of the season. We would talk," Fabregas Snr told Radio Kanal.

"But to be talking about these at the middle of the season - I understand Arsenal being angry.

"If a club is interested in a player, then it should go to the other club and try to negotiate. This is the way to function always.

"If this thing has to happen, it has to be this way: Barca going to talk to Arsenal. That goes the same with Cesc and for the rest of the players."

Match Preview: FC Porto v Arsenal

Despite having the weekend off, Arsenal have somehow managed to be decimated by injuries ahead of their match against FC Porto tonight. The fixture marks the start of the Champions League knockout rounds, and the Gunners have a tough task in store for them if they are to turn over the reigning Portuguese champions at the Estadio do Dragao this evening. Porto are currently off the pace in their own domestic competition, and like the Gunners sit in third position in their respective league.

A series of injuries have rocked Arsene Wenger’s squad ahead of this evening’s tricky encounter. Long-term absentees such as Johan Djourou, Robin van Persie and Kieran Gibbs are joined on the sidelines by Andrey Arshavin, Alex Song, Manuel Almunia, Eduardo and William Gallas. With so few players fit and ready for tonight’s fixture, picking the most likely lineup is rather easy. I think we’ll line up something like this:

Rosicky - Bendtner - Nasri
Diaby - Denilson - Fabregas
Clichy - Vermaelen - Campbell - Eboue
Fabianski

BENCH: Mannone, Silvestre, Sagna, Traore, Ramsey, Vela, Walcott.

Now while that line-up is very likely there could also be some very possible amendments. Bacary Sagna may reclaim his spot at right back at the expense of Emmanuel Eboue,  while Theo Walcott may be used up front instead of Samir Nasri or Tomas Rosicky. Apart from that I think everything else is set in stone.

The injury to gallas will mean that Sol Campbell will play his first Champions League match since the 2006 final (in which he scored), while his central defensive partner Vermaelen will be playing through the pain barrier as he is not completely recovered from his ankle injury.

I am far more worried about the capabilities of Vermaelen than Campbell, as although the Belgian is the better player, his injury woes may restrict his ability. On the other hand, Campbell has been impressive since his return and it appears as though he can be depended upon at the back.

Hosts Porto aren’t without their own injury worries, and coach Jesualdo Ferreira will be wondering how his side will hit the back of the net this evening considering that they have just one solitary forward fit and ready to play.

With Orlando Sa and Ernesto Farias struggling to overcome their respective injury woes and Hulk out since before Christmas, Colombian Radamel Falcao is Porto’s only match fit striker. Also injured for the Portuguese side is playmaker Ruben Micael, while Raul Meireles will be making his return.

In a nutshell, this game will be a tricky encounter. When you consider the venue for tonight’s game this was always going to be a tough fixture, however add in the fact that the Gunners are devoid of many star players and Arsene Wenger really has his work cut out for him. Porto aren’t without their own troubles though, and I think that if anyone snatches a win it will be us. I’m tipping a draw though, and a draw in which we score will be a particularly good result.
