Concentrating more on career now, says Kareena Kapoor

Indian actress Kareena Kapoor says she has been concentrating on her acting career and has stopped attending Bollywood parties.

The popular actress says boyfriend Shahid Kapur was the key to her making some drastic changes in lifestyle, which included developing a positive attitude to life and work.

Kapoor said in an interview published in the Filmfare magazine that she begins every day by giving herself a 'pep talk'.

"I've banished negativity from my life, from my heart. I'm just concentrating on my work," she said. "I've dropped out of the party scene ... Every morning I give myself a pep talk."

She said boyfriend, Kapur, has been a great influence since he told her to talk through her work. ``He's my backbone. He's taught me a lot," said Kapoor. "For starters he tempered me down."

The couple have recently begun speaking to the media about their two-year relationship and are frequently seen together in publicity campaigns and movie premieres.

In the past, Kapoor had sometimes poked fun at her co-stars and made derisive remarks about them - something she says she will never repeat. She said her boyfriend taught her not to "open my mouth unnecessarily. And I used to do that a lot ... I've made mistakes. But I've also learned from them."

She now prefers to concentrate on movie projects including '36 China Town' a romantic movie to be released soon. She is also working in a Bollywood version of Shakespeare's 'Othello' and with well-known actor, Hrithik Roshan, in first-time director Zoya Akhtar's new movie.

"I have good movies on hand. And finally I'm content with myself. I've reached a comfort level with myself," Kapoor said.

John Abraham turns down JHOOM BARABAR

John Abraham has turned down director Shaad Ali's film JHOOM BARABAR citing the most common excuse viz 'the date problems', though the main reason behind it seems to be that he doesn't want to play second fiddle to Abishek Bachchan. He thinks it's commercially viable for him and any director to cast him solo in a film knowing the fact that he has done good job in the past.

It is also believed that John has turned down Mani Ratnam's GURU. It's kind of weird coz there are people who are dying to work with top-notch directors like Mani Ratnam (Dil Se, Yuva). Director Shaad Ali of SAATHIYA and BUNTY AUR BABLI fame has always had a typical single hero-heroine cast. Be it Vivek Oberoi - Rani Mukherjee or Abishek Bachchan - Rani Mukherjee respectively.

Wonder why he wanted to cast John and Abishek together?

Manisha Koirala plans to direct a film

Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala plans to switch roles and try her hand at film direction, after nearly 15 years in front of a camera.

Koirala was examining at least two film projects which she was keen on directing, the popular actress said in the northern Indian city of Lucknow where she is shooting for ``Anwar,'' a film directed by Manish Jha.

"I am working on a few projects and if everything materializes, I will start shooting by year-end," Koirala said.

However, Nepal-born Koirala, who has acted in nearly 60 Bollywood films since her debut in 1991, said she did not intend to give up acting but would do only a few select films.

"I will be selective and will sign only those films that appeal to me," she said.

Koirala, who has acted in box-office hit films "Bombay" and "Dil Se" or "From The Heart," also won praise for her role in "Escape from Taliban," a film on the treatment of women by the hardline Islamic regime that once ruled Afghanistan.

In that film, Koirala played a Hindu woman who marries an Afghan Muslim moneylender despite her family's opposition. She lives in Afghanistan and runs a pharmacy that is destroyed by the Taliban regime.

For the past two years, Koirala took a break to study filmmaking in New York. "I learnt the basics about the creative side of film direction," she said.

Living in New York also taught her other things, she said.

"In India we get spoilt because we are celebrities, but in New York I had to do all the basic things of life myself - like cooking and washing," she said.

Preity Zinta, the warrior woman

We recently came across some photographs of Preity Zinta doing some heavy duty stunts.

Upon further enquiry it was discovered that the actress was shooting a commercial for a shampoo brand she endorses. The ad was being shot in Bangkok, where she was for three days.

Preity fans are sure to see her in a whole new avatar. She was seen dressed in a silver body suit. She plays a warrior woman and will do a lot of action sequences. Directed by Atipat Kamolpaet, the entire ad was shot in front of a blue screen. The reason being that, a lot of special effects and animation will be used. It was quite a challenge because Preity was required to emote, based on her imagination of what is happening around her.

Preity was quite excited about the entire concept. She even gave her inputs so that the ad would be more action packed.

Hrithik always inspires his co-stars

Priyanka Chopra, Amisha Patel, Esha Deol, Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor hold almost the same feelings to co-star with Hrithik and they grade him as a superstar and love to co-star with him.

"His focus inspires you to give your best on the set just because he is so charged about the team work and their characters that one cannot leave without praising his attitude" said Priyanka Chopra.

Amisha Patel said: "Hrithik is a buddy and a gem of a person. I have been the friend of his wife Suzanne since I was 16".

Esha Deol said: "Hrithik always makes your work lighter by giving you due support as a co-star."

Preity Zinta said: "I was already working with him long before he became a superstar - in Mission Kashmir.  We did Lakshya later.  He has truly grown as an actor over the years, and it's all thanks to the hard work that he has put in."

Kareena Kapoor said: "I would call Hrithik as a perfectionist. Yet despite being so disciplined, he is totally fun to work with."

ESHA BANKS ON HER SOLO 'ANKAHEE'

Esha Deol is from a Bollywood family with her parents and both brothers completely involved in the industry. Yes, her parents are politicians too as both are members of Indian Parliament and are activists of the Bharatiya Janta Party. Esha is frank and straightforward in her views and comments. She boldly says that the males have dominated the film industry in India. Even among the audience, the males matter inasmuch as they want the girls to look tempting, she comtinues. So, the females in the entertainment industry have to do what the audience wants to watch. As far as she is concerned, she neither wants to wear scanty clothes nor wishes to expose on screen. But, she does it helplessly to stay in the industry. In regard to her views about extramarital relations, she is modern.

She isn't averse to these relations and believes that this practice has been prevalent in Indian society for quite a long time. She wishes our society to accept it. Regarding her new movie 'Ankahee', she says that her cherished desire to be a solo heroine is being fulfilled in it. She is very excited to play the role of a beauty queen in 'Ankahee' as she hasn't ever been in a Miss World in her real life. Is her role in 'Ankahee' based on the life of Sushmita Sen? She says that she isn't sure as several models and world beauties have been there in the film industry. However, she confesses that in 'Ankahee' she is crowned Miss World and the movie story is based on the past relationship between Bhatt and Sushmita Sen, it is said.

Esha is happy on another count too. She is repeating in 'Ankahee' with Aftab Shivdasani with whom she began her career in 'Koi Mere Dil Se Poonche'. She is banking on this movie.

Kajol, Preity and... Bhajji and Brian

With the designer apparel industry growing and fashion shows becoming commonplace to showcase the designer's works and creativity, more celebrities are willing to cash in on the publicity and walk to the ramp.
The 'show-stoppers' range from actors like like Kajol, Preity, Salman Khan and Shilpa Shetty, model-turned actors like Bipasha Basu, Dia Mirza, Koena Mitra, Maliaka Arora-Khan, activist-politicians like Shabana Azmi and Nafia Ali and sportsmen like Brian Lara and Harbhajan Singh and even socialite Shweta Bachchan-Nanda, not to mention Sania Mirza, the tennis prodigy, whose body is straining under the game's load, but which is still good enough to shake a leg at the people watching her on the ramp.

"Fashion is about glamour and celebrities epitomize this. It acts as an advertisment for the designer besides creating an aspirational value for his creations," says Rathi Vinay Jha, Director General, Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI).

Renowned designer Rina Dhaka says that celebrities are a great pull for domestic buyers but don't attract international ones, except to perhaps sell a one-off piece.

"Buyers do look at the buzz surrounding a designer and somewhere, that does translate into sales. It sends a positive signal to the buyer," feels Harmeet Bajaj, renown fashion consultant and former professor at National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

Explaining with an analogy she says, "You can either get a Niclole Kidman to wear your outfit or put an advertisment in the Vogue. The celebrity acts as endorsement for the designer."

"I personally feel it's all right to do it for charity or a noble cause. Beyond that it's really an individual's discretion," says model-actress turned politician Nafisa Ali.

Adds veteran Congress politician Vasant Sathe who had famously walked the ramp in the 1980s "I think historically India has had a rich tradition of fabrics, colours and clothes - which need to be encouraged."

With reference to the recently concluded Mumbai and Delhi fashion weeks, Bajaj questions the choice of celebrities. "I am not sure if Shilpa Shetty was the best reflected Tarun Tahilani's design philosophy. Bipasha has a sexy image and the dress she wore was more thematic than one that suited her image," says Bajaj.

"For the designers, it more about flaunting their clientele. It's a reflection of how social the designer and an 'I got her; mentality," says Bajaj.

"It seems like sheer gimmick to get a Brian Lara to walk the ramp, that too not wearing the designer's outfit. In fact a Rajesh Pratap or a Sabhayasachi insist on a no-make, degalmourised look for the models so that the focus is on the clothes."

Further, he reasons that a Bipasha, Kajol, Dia Mirza or Shilpa Shetty may be big stars here but are little known faces abroad.

"I do feel that the attitude, body language and the way of life of the designer and the celebrity should be in sync. Else they do seem like putting a lehenga on Madonna. The celebrity should be able to translate a designer's vision of the collection and enhance it further," says Mumbai based designer who recently got Bollywood actor Saif Ali khan's girlfriend Rosa wonders what all the fuss is about "abroad all the stars dot the front row and walk the ramp."

She defends her case by stating that Rosa besides being a "friend, fitted in well with the look of the collection - rich, graphic and glamourous.

Well-known TV personality Mandira 'noodle-strap' Bedi emphasises that it is not the job of the celebrity to pull clientele.

"The designers often put their best outfit from the collection on the celebrity because pictures of the "show stopper" will be featured in the press," says Bedi who walked the ramp for debutante Priya Avasthi. While emphasising that this is more crucial for designers foraying into the business she adds that "the collection has to speak for itself."

Agrees Avasthi "the international buyers would have shortlisted the garments based on the catalogue that has been sent much before the show.

They will buy my collection for its merit and if it fits in with the collection already on the shelves of their store."

Bajaj explains how celebrities are more tied in more judiciously with fashion in the West "ahead of the Oscars, top designers send across accessories and dresses for the celebrities to choose. Whose outfit the celebrity choosed makes as much news as the celebrity themselves. The filmfare could be used in a similar fashion," she says.

Bajaj emphasises though that it is best to rely on the strength of one's design than to get a wrongly chosen celebrity.

揜eema Sen doesn抰 have the body to expose 厖厰!

Now item gal Rakhi Sawant opened her mouth in the case, where a local court in Madurai has recently issued a non-bailable warrant against actresses Shilpa Shetty and Reema Sen for 'posing in an obscene manner' in photographs published in a Tamil Tabloid.

Rakhi Sawant said, while talking to media persons, "If it would have been Mallika Sherawat or Neha Dhupia, then it may have been justified as they expose."

"Reema Sen doesn't have the body to expose so why should a non-bailable arrest warrant be issued against her," she questioned. "As for Shilpa Shetty, then I think she knows her limits and would never expose before photographers. I feel it's nothing but a publicity stunt," Rakhi said with sheer annoyance.

Arshad Warsi out of 'Sunglass'

Arshad Warsi has walked out of director Rituparno Ghosh's next titled 'Sunglass'. Warsi agreed to do the film initially and even allotted dates for the film but when Rituparno requested him to reconsider his remuneration, he backed out.

According to Warsi, he had already quoted 50 per cent of his usual fee, considering the fact that it was a small budget film, but then Ghosh told him to charge even lesser, something that he could ill-afford.

'Sunglass' is a bilingual film, starring Konkona Sen Sharma.

Kim ditches Akbar Khan

While the entire cast of Akbar Khan's 'Taj Mahal' is there in Pakistan to support and promote the release, one person that is conspicuous by absence is Kim Sharma, who is a part of the film.

Sources close to Khan say that Khan was waiting with her flight ticket to Pakistan at the Mumbai airport recently. However Kim ditched her director at the eleventh hour. She didn't even call and inform Akbar Khan that she was not going for the premiere.

According to Kim, she could not make the trip because Khan changed the dates. She was told that they would leave on April 15th and then the date was changed to April 23rd. From April 23rd onwards, she was required to dub for 'Tom, Dick and Harry'.
