Once mainly a haunt of Bollywood's leading ladies, producers and distributors are beefing up the Indian presence as the industry attempts to turn its prodigious output into box office success.

Indian films, including "Rang De Basanti", the biggest hit of the year so far in India, will be exhibited at the 12-day festival that runs from May 17, although none are in the running for awards.

Bollywood producer and director Karan Johar, who plans to showcase his latest film "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna", said he hoped to tap the huge European market.

"I feel that the Cannes Film Festival will give me an opportunity to exhibit my film to European audiences. It is a huge market which I feel I have not tapped properly."

Suneel Darshan, a Bollywood producer and director said his films had done well in Britain, where there is a large Asian population and following of Hindi films.

"The world is slowly waking up to Bollywood cinema and I don't want to miss the bus. I want to give the Europeans a taste of traditional Indian cinema through this festival," he said.

Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat and former Miss World-turned-actress Aishwarya Rai have created a stir with their appearances at Cannes in the last two years.

But this year, Bollywood actress Preity Zinta will make an appearance along with actor Ajay Devgan who will promote his latest film "Omkara", loosely based on Shakespeare's Othello.

The Indian film industry is the largest by volume in the world, producing more than 1,000 movies in 2005 but accounting for only one percent of global film industry revenues.

A 2005 industry report said overseas markets were an "untapped opportunity" with foreign box office receipts accounting for less than 10 percent of Indian film industry revenue.

The report blamed poor dubbing and subtitling, ineffective marketing and low investment for the industry's failure to make more of a mark overseas.

The production house known for making blockbuster family entertainers like Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun return with Vivah, hitting theatres in November.

The film stars Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao and is directed by Sooraj Barjatya (right). The filmmakers confirm that 85 per cent of the shoot has been completed, and with just one song and a handful of scenes to go, Vivah should be finished well in time.

Raveena doesn't regret her catfight!  

Remember Raveena Tandon made headlines during the new year when she dumped a glass of wine on her husband Anil Thadani's ex-wife?
Well, here's some more dope on that incident. She recently appeared on a popular television chat show. When asked if she regretted her actions, she was far from remorseful. On the contrary, she stated that pouring the wine was not an impulsive decision and she quite enjoyed it! According to the actress, she had decided on the same reaction almost two years ago!

But it's not like Raveena behaved in that manner without a valid reason. It seems that her husband's ex wife was spreading false rumors about Anil and Raveena. And her husband was just maintaining a dignified silence, throughout. Raveena is the best judge of her actions. And in the future, whoever attempts to mess with her, will definitely have to think twice!

KUALA LUMPUR - Pelakon, Abby Abadi, bersedia untuk kembali ke pangkuan suaminya, Norman Hakim, selepas dijatuhkan talak satu tetapi tidak akan memaafkan orang ketiga yang menghancurkan rumah tangga mereka.

'Saya tak mahu tuduh sesiapa, tapi orang ketiga yang bertanggungjawab terhadap perpisahan kami tidak sepatutnya bersikap lepas tangan.

'Selama ini rumah tangga kami aman dan bahagia. Kalau ada perbalahan pun, ia hanyalah pertelingkahan biasa. Namun apabila ada pihak ketiga, masalah yang kecil selalunya akan menjadi besar.

'Saya bersedia menerimanya (Norman) kembali dan memaafkannya. Tetapi saya tidak akan memaafkan orang yang menjadi punca kehancuran rumah tangga saya,' katanya malam kelmarin.

Orang ketiga yang dimaksudkan itu ialah artis kacukan Melayu-Inggeris, Farahdhiya, yang didakwa semakin mesra dengan Norman ketika menyertai Fiesta Media Idola (FMI) di Kuantan bulan lalu.

Norman, 30 tahun, melafazkan talak di hadapan Abby, 28 tahun, ketika isterinya menemuinya di lokasi penggambaran Gerak Khas, di Jalan Raja Laut, di sini, sekitar 3 petang, Jumaat lalu.

'Itu memang kesilapan saya kerana memohon untuk diceraikan pada masa itu. Namun, kejadian itu berlaku ketika saya berada dalam keadaan yang cukup tertekan.

'Pagi Selasa lalu pula, Norman menghubungi saya dan dia terus menangis dan memberitahu dia tidak boleh hidup berseorangan. Jadi kepada sesiapa yang berniat mahu rosakkan keluarga kami, baik lupakan saja. Hanya Allah yang boleh memisahkan kami,' katanya.

Menyifatkan perselisihan mereka sebagai adat dalam berumahtangga, Abby berkata ia diburukkan lagi dengan kehadiran orang ketiga.

'Saya pernah menelefon wanita itu untuk mengetahui kedudukan sebenar. Malangnya, dia bersikap biadab membuatkan saya bosan dan menamatkan perbualan,' katanya. - Harian Metro, BHM.

KUALA LUMPUR - Keutuhan kasih mereka terbukti apabila pasangan pelakon, Norman Hakim dan Abby Abadi rujuk semula dalam masa kurang lima minit selepas memfailkan permohonan pengesahan cerai di Mahkamah Rendah Syariah Gombak Timur dekat sini, kelmarin.

Sebelum itu, kedua-dua mereka memfailkan permohonan pengesahan cerai di depan Penolong Pendaftar Mahkamah, Encik Harun Hashim.

Norman, 30 tahun, dan Abby, 28 tahun, bercerai talak satu pada 5 Mei lalu di Jalan Raja Laut di sini.

Ketika ditanya apakah puncanya sehingga menyebabkan lafaz cerai diucapkan, Norman menjelaskan mereka dalam keadaan tertekan.

Apabila ditanya mengenai kehadiran orang ketiga, Abby berkata:

'Saya tidak mahu berjumpa atau berhubung dengannya lagi kerana dia tiada kepentingan dalam hidup saya.

'Saya mudah memaafkan orang tetapi apabila wanita itu kata dia tidak tahu langsung mengenai hubungannya dengan Norman, saya cukup terkilan. Buat masa ini saya tidak akan maafkan dia. Kalau boleh saya hendak dia tahu betapa sakitnya saya terpaksa melalui semua ini.'

Sementara itu Norman berkata, mereka berdua berhasrat menunaikan umrah bersama anak-anak sebagai usaha untuk membina kehidupan baru. 'Saya tak boleh hidup tanpa isteri dan anak-anak kerana merekalah kekuatan dan 'tulang belakang' saya.

NAMPAKNYA jelitawan kaya Paris Hilton tidak boleh lama menjauhkan dirinya daripada kontroversi.

Baru-baru ini, beliau berada di Los Angeles Convention Center untuk melancarkan permainan videonya dalam acara Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Bukan sahaja Paris datang lewat untuk majlis pelancaran itu, beliau juga memberikan bukti tambahan untuk persona 'dumb blonde' yang selalu dikaitkan dengannya apabila tersilap memberi nama permainannya itu.

Entertaiment Online melaporkan bahawa Paris meminta maaf kerana lewat tetapi kemudian berkata:

'Saya sangat gembira dengan pelancaran permainan video saya, Diamond Quest. Terima kasih kerana hadir dan sila muat turun permainan itu,' kata Paris kepada pihak media.

Masalahnya timbul kerana nama permainan itu bukanlah Diamond Quest.

Apabila ditanya, penerbit permainan video itu, Gameloft berkata bahawa memang permainan video itu telah digantikan namanya kepada Diamond Quest walaupun sepanduk promosi dan poster iklan di sekeliling Paris pada ketika itu memberikan nama permainan sebagai Paris Hilton's Jewel Jam.

ANCAMAN BUNUH LINDSAY
PENYANYI dan pelakon remaja, Lindsay Lohan, telah menerima ancaman bunuh daripada peminat setia John Lennon baru-baru ini.

Toronto Fashion Monitor melaporkan bahawa Lindsay menerima ancaman itu kerana wataknya sebagai rakan pembunuh John Lennon dalam filem Chapter 27 mengenai kisah hidup Mark David Chapman yang membunuh ahli kumpulan The Beatles itu.

Akshaye Khanna wants to settle down! Where抯 gal?

Actor Akshaye Khanna wants to settle down, however he's not getting his right match. Akshaye, one of the most eligible bachelors of Bollywood, is now 31. Though in his age, Bollywood's one or two leading gals still living single, but Akshaye doesn't want to wait any more. In a recent interview, he said, "I'm looking to settle down soon, as I find someone suitable."

As per his filmy career is concerned, Akshaye is Mr. Dependable in the filmy industry. Directors and producers depend on his acting skill. His latest release '36, China Town', in which he played a cop, also received rave reviews for his well-convincing performance.  

Shah Rukh beat Hrithik!

Recently we had asked in our weekly poll section that if Shah Rukh's 'Don' and Hrithik Roshan's 'Krrish' release in same week, which film they would like to watch first.

It's being said, Hrithik's forthcoming 'Krrish' is the most awaited film in the current year, but the poll-result went against it.

We surprised to see that most people want to watch Shah Rukh's 'Don' first, then 'Krrish'.

However there's no chance of 'Don' and 'Krrish' to clash with. Because Farhan Akhtar's 'Don' remake is scheduled for a Diwali release, whereas 'Krrish' is scheduled to release on June 23.

Kim Sharma claims to be doing fairly well these days. She is banking on her recently released 'Tom Dick and Harry' and her forthcoming 'Ladies Tailor'. When asked about her linkup with cricketer Yuvraj Singh she says, "I do not want to talk about Yuvraj. I wouldn't like to react to any comment in the media about him. I wish to live my normal life."

Why are you lagging behind though you began your career with Yash Chopra's 'Mohabattein'?
I have made some mistakes initially so I have to suffer for them. Now, I am trying to link up with such projects that will expose my acting talent.

Can you name these projects?
Yes, I can. They are 'The Whispers' starring Manoj Bajpai and Rahul Bose besides Rajpal Yadav starrer 'Ladies Tailor'. I am also acting with Rekha and Mahima Choudhry in 'Kudio Ka Hai Jamana'. Apart from this, I am also working in Tanuja Chandra's 'Rocking' and Sanjay Saif Ali starrer 'Nehle Pe Dehla', which is ready for release.

Are you like Bijlee, the character you played in 'Tom Dick Harry' in real life?
Yes, I am bold and talk a lot like Bijlee. However, I am not similar to her character in other matters. Whatever I do I do after proper thinking.

DIA: BE HAPPY MAKE OTHERS HAPPY

Though Dia Mirza has not made a big mark in the film industry as have her other contemporaries, yet she is not much far behind. After all, she is doing all types of movies and roles. At present, she is busy in a Bangla film on the one hand and comedies on the other. Besides, she is also doing Subi Samuel's 'Alag', a still different one.

Why have you shifted to a Bangla movie? Is it because of lack of enough Hindi movie offers?  
No, it's not true. However, I am doing a Bangla movie of Raja Mukherjee, brother of Rani Mukherje, But titled 'Vidhetaar Lekha'. This doesn't mean that I have completely shifted to Bengali movies.

Why have you shifted to comedy?
I have not yet done many comedies. But I like doing comedies provided they are pure. I like those comedies, which do not have double meanings.

What type of comedies are you doing presently?
I am doing situation-based comedies. They are 'Vaah, Kya Family Hai', 'Munnabhai Lage Raho' and 'Honeymoon Travels Private Limited'.

How do you distinguish today's comedies from those in the past?
In the past, we had comic characters. Now, we create humorous situations. But today's trend is for comedies.

What is 'Alag' all about?
This is about the life of a boy who possesses extraordinary powers. So, his parents confine him to home. However, he goes out of home at the age of eighteen. Then, he finds the outside world quite different from what he has witnessed at home. I am associated with an organization that is involved in the welfare of such persons and try to bring happiness into his life.

How do you feel about your career?
I am happy with my career. I have got enough in my brief acting career. I have got recognition in the industry.

Do you have any affair as reported in the media?
No, I have none. I read about my affairs in the media. Initially, I took them seriously but not any more.

What is love according to you?
I believe that love is something very strange. One never knows when, where and with whom it may occur.

Are you ready for love?
Yes, I am ready and I shall announce it the day I fall in love with someone. I don't like hiding it.

What's the mantra of your life?
To be happy and make others happy is the mantra of my life.

Aren't you as ambitious as other heroines?
Though I wish to do my best in good movies, I don't like worrying too much about it. Career is important for me; but it's not the all. There is my life too.

Did you make friends in the film world?
There is a limit for friendship in the filmi world.

What's 'Munnabhai Lage Raho' all about?
This movie is not going to be less interesting than 'Munnabhai MBBS'. However, I cannot divulge more about it at this stage.

What's your role in 'Vaah, Kya Family Hai'?
This is writer-turned-director Neeraj Vora's movie. This was earlier named 'Dil Sachcha Aur Chehra Jhootha'. Arjun Rampal is the movie's hero. I consider it a comedy. The movie's story is about a girl who wants to marry in a rich family, but falls in love with an orphan boy. How the orphan becomes rich creates comic situations in the movie.

What about your Bangla movie?
This movie has excited me very much as Bangla is my mother's tongue. The movie is quite emotional. Anyone will like to act in such a movie.

SUSH BECOME ROCK STAR

Whatever she has done she has always done in style, whether it is the role of a police inspector in 'Samay', a teacher in 'Main Hoon Naa' or a prostitute in 'Chingari'. That's why once Miss Universe Sushmita Sen has been drawing the attention of the audience as well the critics. Now, she is all set to rock the industry with her forthcoming movie 'Zindagi Rock' which was earlier titled 'Rocking'. Tanuja Chandra is directing the movie and this is the first time when Sush is playing the role of a Rock star. While asked about the story of the movie, Tanuja explained that this is a story of a performer.

Shiney Ahuja, the hero of the movie, plays a heart specialist while Sush is in the role of a Rock star. Moushmi Chatterjee will be seen in a double role. You will also watch Kim Sharma and Seema Biswas in this movie. About her role Sush says, " The audience will see me in a role totally different from my last release 'Chingari'. I am also doing Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Corporate'. But I think ' Zindagi Rock''s will be my best role I have done so far." According to Anuradha Prasad, the producer, "The movie has a very good storyline. I had never seen this type of a movie before". Anuradha added that the movie would be released some time in August this year.

TANISHA TO MARRY WITH UDAY CHOPRA?

Uday Chopra, the younger son of Yash Chopra, isn't slow in flirting girls though he hasn't fared too well in his filmi career. Shooting to fame in 'Dhoom', Uday Chopra played a hero opposite Tanisha in Yash Chopra's home production 'Neal 'N' Nikki'. Tanisha is younger sister of Kajol. However, Uday Chopra failed to hit the box office in this movie. But, Uday won the heart of Tanisha while working with her in the movie. Their friendship has since grown into a thick affair inasmuch as it may soon lead to the marriage of the two actors belonging to two leading Bollywood families.

Uday is happy that both the families have lent their support to their love relationship. Though both haven't hidden their friendship from the public eye, they have also not confirmed any further relationship. The Uday-Tanisha affair hasn't drawn the public attention like those of Kareena Kapoor and Shaahid Kapoor and Bipasha Basu and John Abraham. Though this hasn't remained a secret from the eyes of those working in Yash Chopra production house. Besides, Uday and Tanisha are frequently noticed chatting in restaurants and attending parties. According to their family sources, the marriage may realize in the coming two years as both the actors have yet to succeed in their career.

AKSHAY: MUSIC TEACHES LOVE

Film actor Akshay Kumar launched DadA Music's first album 'Internal Activities' by the India Today group in New Delhi last week. Satyanand has composed its music. Akshay described Satyanand's music as 'Hat ke'. Though this is called instrumental, but several experiments have been made in this music without traditional instruments. Interestingly, this function was organized in the backdrop of historical fort of the Mahabharat age. DadA Music brings to the Indian subcontinent the best ambient sounds from across the globe.

While talking to media its composer Satyanand says, "The DadA movement began in Zurich, Switzerland, during First War and peaked from 1916 to 1920. This was a revolutionary moment where creativity defined conventional art forms thereby making way for articulation of individual expression. This music intends to showcase the abstract creativity of modern day musician to explore new dimensions in music." Akshay Kumar ended by saying that the music is common and the only binding factor though it has many varieties. The music teaches love to humanity. Indeed, this laser show was excellent and the sound effects were amazing.
