Pooja's next 'Holiday' may be less sexy

Pooja Bhatt known for making bold and sexy movies is making her next 'Holiday'. The movie is based on Hollywood's 'Dirty Dancing'. This is not likely to be as sexy as her earlier films. She has learnt that sex doesn't sell that well any longer. That's why she has had less of sex in 'her 'Paap' and 'Rog' than in 'Jism'. Even the heroines have realized of late that excess of sex in movies is becoming a taboo. They are distancing themselves from enacting such scenes. In fact, many of them don't want to be tagged on with this image. Sex bombs like Bipasha Basu and Payal Rohatagi are the few among them.

In 'Paheli' Rani will be seen with Shah Rukh Khan and in 'The Rising' with Aamir Khan. Let's wait and watch her romance with the two top film star Khans.

Five warned for SMSing Preity Zinta

Five youngsters from Pune were reprimanded on Monday for making prank calls and sending messages to actress Preity Zinta in the name of Bollywood superstars Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan, police said.

The youngsters, identified as Arif Mirza, Farooq Sheikh, Tausif Patel, Uday Nikalje and Silven Lobo, were called to Khar police station in western Mumbai and let off after a strong reprimand, police said.

"The complaint lodged by Zinta amounted to non-cognisable offence and the youths did not have any criminal motive," Deputy Commissioner of Police Amitabh Gupta said.

Preity Zinta had lodged complaint at Khar police station on August 3, saying that she was receiving abusive SMSs and phone calls, in which the sender identified himself as Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan.

Gupta said initially it was established that the callers and senders were Pune-based, and subsequent probe revealed that mobile phone of one Arif Mubarak Mirza, 21, from Pune was used for the purpose.

The actress was also annoyed with her cellular service provider to whom she had specifically directed not to divulge her cell number to anyone, police said, adding Zinta suspected that someone close to her may have leaked her number.

"Investigations revealed that Uday Nikalje and Mohasin Sheikh, employees of a franchisee company of the cellular provider had managed to get the cell number and obliged their friends by giving it," Gupta said.

Aamir Khan - A Lucky Genius

We are ruled by numbers from the day we are born and the way we think is the way we write. Aamir Khan was born on 14/3/1965 numerologically comes to number 14=1+4=5 which is ruled by planet Mercury. Except number four and six Aamir will get along with all the numbers" says Mancchanda. "We sign the way we want to be seen by the world. Our signature reflects our personality and if the angle of signature is bad then there are numerous problems in life. But Aamir's signature is very progressive.
Aamir's handwriting reveals that he is a genius and I call him a lucky genius because most of his films come to very strong numbers and many vibrate with him. He started his career with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak which comes to number 41. 41 is a very powerful number and is 41=4+1=5. People loved Aamir more than the movie. First Aamir was praised and then the movie. This is what luck is all about. His next big hit was Dil which comes to 8, and 5 and 8 get along very well.
Further hits like Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke comes to number 55 which is again an extra ordinary number. 5+5=10=1+0=1. 1 and five vibrate like house on fire. Aamir's secretary Aashish who is working with him past 13 years is born on 19th October(19=1+9=10=1+0=1). His next movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander was not a hit but was critically acclaimed because it came to number 66=6+6=12=1+2=3. For Aamir 3 will always give critical acclaim. This is the reason Andaz Apna Apna (30=3+0=3) also got him critical acclaim where as the movie did not work anywhere except Bombay. His next huge hit was Rangeela =25=2+5=7. 5 and 7 get along very well and Rangeela created a new kind of craze for Aamir. His biggest hit till today is Raja Hindustani which came to number 53=5+3=8 which again vibrates with him. Ishq=10=1+0=1 again was a big hit and proved lucky for him. The next big hit was Sarfarosh=32=3+2=5. A very powerful number and again Aamir's number. People loved Aamir's performance and then praised the movie.
In 2001 Lagaan was released. The movie had to reach Oscars because Lagaan =14 and Aamir is born on 14th. The movie was made with his number and being the actor and producer the biggest benefit had to go to Aamir. The movie's director Ashutosh Gowariker did not get that amount of credit what Aamir got. Some people also wrote that the movie was ghostly directed by Aamir. This is all because Lagaan comes to number 14. He has been so lucky that two days before the earthquake at Bhuj, Aamir had returned with his unit and the village where they had shot was only mud. It's the number 14 which saved the entire unit. His next movie Dil Chahta Hai=34=3+4=7 . Like Rangeela, Dil Chahta Hai is also 7 and people again went crazy on Aamir.
This is why I call him lucky. None of his films have been titled numerologically but Aamir has been lucky as most of his films had very powerful numbers and vibrated with him. Aamir Khan Production comes to number 72=7+2=9 which is a very strong number. What more luck can we talk about.
Aamir's handwriting and signature: Among all the stars (Amitabh, Srk & Hr) Aamir is the most egoistic & has a high self esteem. He ought to have the ego as his writing reveals that he is a genius in his field. I repeat that he is a genius in his field. Extremely critical. He is a self reliant person & his life for him is more important than his family. Money is very important for him. You will always hear him being paid the highest price for movies and advertisements. Extremely secretive & till the time he does not reveal no one will come to know his secrets. Extremely protective about himself. Will always think before he talks. You will never hear loose talk from him.
A sharp person & likes to do things in detail. Very emotional & all his decisions will always be emotional. He is not practical & logical. He is intuitive & will always take decisions what his heart tells him. This is the reason he always signs films with new or not so successful directors.
Aamir is very particular about his money and no one can touch his money till he does not decide to shell it out. Regular work is boring for him. He believes in new ideas. He is not jealous with any of his co-stars success. He takes his co-stars as healthy competition. He has determination & also has the energy to get it done. He believes in growth and has a very positive attitude towards life. He is very energetic.
Aamir knows how to use people. He is self centered not selfish. He likes flattery and hates blunt people. He is also a gutsy person.
Aamir should always believe in him & never work in awe of any big names. He should always work on new subjects. If he does regular films he will have failures. Presently his name comes to number 22 and he needs to add an alphabet in his full name to make it 23= 2+3=5. If he does it then he will reach much greater heights than what he has achieved till today.
His next film Mangal Pandey comes to number 41=4+1=5 . But by adding The Rising the number has changed. It vibrates with him. People will love Aamir more than the film. Aamir's performance will be applauded by critics and the audience but the film will not be upto expectations.

RANAWAT: ISHA HAS ALL THAT 'HASEENA' DEMANDED

Famous director-cum-producer Vicky Ranawat who has to his credit movies like '15 August', 'Nyaya Data', 'Deewana Sanam', ' Dal- The Gang', 'Jwala Daku, and 'Kabu' is now busy with his latest venture 'Haseena'. Isha Koppikar, Raj Babbar, Priti Jhingiani and Kiran Janjani, are in the main roles. We met with Vicky Ranawat recently to know more about 'Haseena' and its key characters.

What's the story of 'Haseena'?

Isha Koppikar is playing the key character in 'Haseena'. She works in Raj Babbar's office. Besides, she dances at a nightclub. Once Raj Babbar visits the nightclub along with his client. He finds Isha Koppikar dancing at the floor there. Next day, Raj calls Isha and asks her why she danced at the nightclub. She frankly confesses that she has a cherished dream of making huge money in her life.

Raj offers her to live with him and enjoy all the luxuries of life. She agrees and begins to live with Raj Babbar. Suddenly, Kiran Janjani, son of Raj's friend, comes to India to learn music, and stays with Raj Babbar. After a few meetings, Isha and Kiran fall in love with each other. One day, Kiran goes out for a show and meets Priti Jhingiani there. He falls in love with her too. Priti is daughter of Raj Babbar.

Priti tells her father that she wants to marry with Kiran. This gives a big shock to Isha, who loved Kiran too. However, Priti approaches Isha and seeks her advice. "Since you live with my father I consider you like my mother. Please tell me about Kiran." This confuses Isha and she doesn't know what to advise Priti. However, with a heavy heart, she takes a hard decision and tells Priti that Kiran is a nice person and that she should marry with him.

What happens later?

After a few days, a photographer meets Isha and tells her that he has in his possession several photos of her illicit relations with Kiran. Thus, he blackmails Isha. From here the story takes a new turn. I won't tell you any more about the story.

Why did you choose Isha Koppikar for the key role?

Yes, I took Isha to play the main character, as she possesses all the characteristics that Haseena's character demanded. You will find it while watching the movie.

Will she carry further her khallas girl's image?

No, she would not. In fact, she would rather change her that image completely, and have a new image.

Why did you choose a new face as 'Haseena's hero though many actors had worked in your earlier movies?

For this character, I was looking for a boy who had no past image. I am very happy that Kiran has more than satisfied me by his performance in 'Haseena'.

What else are you doing at present?

Besides this movie, I am going to launch soon another film titled 'Thodi Masti Thodi Dhoom'.

What will be the cast the new movie?

I shall sign Sanjay Kapoor,Bhatt, Vikas Kalantri, Jatin Grewal, Karan Kapoor, Navneet , Sharad Saxena, Baba Sehgal, and Vivek shauq in 'Haseena' . Baba Sehgal will play a villainous role for the first time in movies.

Isha Koppikar

MANOJ BAJPAI HAS NO REGRET

Manoj Bajpai of the recently released 'Fareb' fame starring with Shetty sisters-Shilpa and Shamita-has just completed shooting of his two forthcoming movies titled 'Man From Rajapur' as well as '1971'. Manoj has no regret in his acting career though he hasn't yet gotten big budget movies like Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan. He missed acting in 'Devdas' even though it was his cherished desire. Within his seven-year career, he has witnessed many ups and downs, but he doesn't feel so personally. This might be the perception of others though. Similarly, he missed National Award in 'Shool', but so what, he obtained one in 'Pinjar'. We met with Manoj and chatted with him about his forthcoming movies.

What's all about 'Man From Rajapur'?

This is the story of a relationship between an Indian prince and an American princess. The prince has his own heritage where an American couple comes for honeymoon.

How did the producer choose you for the key role of a prince?

The producer and the director chose me to play a prince after watching my earlier movies. I had played a prince in 'Zubeda' too. However, it was a period film. Besides, 'Zubeda's story was different. This was based on the story of a woman's struggle married in a royal family, whereas 'Man From Rajapur' talks about a prince and his newly married bride.

Who are the other actors?

I am the only Indian actor in this American production directed by Nanda Anand.

Is your movie titled '1971' based on war?

No, it's not so. There is no hero or a heroine in it. This is the story of the struggle of its five/ six characters. I am their leader. The story is about 54 soldiers held during the 1971 war with Pakistan for the liberation of Bangladesh. These prisoners want to return to their home country.

Who has written the story?

Piyush Mishra has scripted it.

Don't you wish to do Shah Rukh and Hrithik like movies?

I know that I don't get big budget movies like Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan. I would love to do such movies. I wish I had acted in 'Devdas'. I have acted in sole hero movies but mostly budget ones that sell well. I concentrate on my acting and not on box office. I am an artist. I have acted in a street corner (Nukkad), and don't mind repeating it, as any artist would like to do.

Why did you face so many ups and downs in your short career?

I don't feel any such thing personally though others may have felt so. I think one needs to adjust with circumstances. I don't regret for doing any movie, nor do I regret for missing National Award for 'Shool'. After all, I had lost it to a talented actor like Mohan Lal and that too by three votes. Anyway, I got an award for 'Pinjar'. I have had enough in my seven-year's short career. This is my belief.

AJAY & ABHISHEK MAKE A GOOD TEAM IN ACTION THRILLER.

The year 2003 will be remembered in Bollywood for the maximum number of directors making their debuts. They have not only made their entry in Bollywood, but they have also left their mark. Success that eluded the biggest film industry during the last one-decade or so, now seems to be a catwalk for these newcomers. About ten films have been declared hit or semi- hit already this year. And directors like Rohit Shetty are going to make this number reach to the maximum. Rohit Shetty is the new director on the block. He is not experimenting with any new genre. He has made a typical masala film in 'Zameen' but still has managed to leave mark for himself.

No great shouting of a hat ke story and no claims of presenting its characters in off- beat roles and neither does he claim to be a path setter. But still he has made a film that is not only entertainer but also promises to give a fresh lease of life to one of its actors, Abhishek Bachchan. Those who were running around the trees kind of the films with Junior B, should not sit. They should take a serious note of his body language in this film, because he can be transformed into a new angry young boy on the screen. And, all the credit goes to none other than the director of 'Zameen', Rohit Shetty.

The story of 'Zameen' revolves around cross border terrorism. Many films have been made on this topic in the recent past but what makes 'Zameen' different from them is its execution. The film takes off from the point when Col Ranvir (Ajay Devgan) captured a dreaded terrorist Baba Zaheer (Mukesh Tiwari). He is the mastermind of Al Tahir organization that is behind many killings in the valley and elsewhere in the country. After some time Col Ranvir gets information about four militants crossing the border and sneaking into India. He set about to trace them and found out their motive. This search makes him reach Mumbai. ACP Jai (Abhishek Bachchan) of the Mumbai police tracks a gang that smuggles arms to the industrial capital of the country. He manages to open the secrets of this gang but only to see that there is more than just a case of arms smuggling this time. Col Ranvir and Jai work to catch the wronged people but before they succeed in their mission, a plane is hijacked and taken to POK (Pak occupied Kashmir (reference to Indian Airlines' hijack to Kandhar). The goings gets tough for Army and Police. Indian delegates start negotiations to get the passengers on board. On the other hand, the Army and Police join hands to finish the enemies of the nation and what happens after that is a surely a thing to watch.

The story may look like a familiar one but the way it's executed on the screen gives the feeling that even writers in Bollywood have sense. The whole scene is authentic and utmost care has been taken to give facts only. Producer N R Pachisia must thank his director for getting such a fine and perfect team. Writer Suparn Verma has given his best till date in this film. He has weaved the incidents in an interesting manner and actually the story progression is the backbone of this film. Dialogue writer Javed Siddiqui aptly supports the script. Verbal dual between Ajay Devgan and Mukesh Tiwari are the highlighs of the film. Javed has written some punching dialogues for Abhishek too. A thriller likes this required a crisp editing and here too in Bunty Nagi, Rohit has got a good help. Aseem Bajaj's photography is excellent and his camera work creates the right kind of ambience required for this kind of a film. If writer Suparn Verma has managed to create the soul of the film, it is action director Jai Singh who has done brilliant action sequences to add power to it. Music of the film is also above average. In fact, one song Dilli Ki Sardi is destined to be the chart buster in coming days. Amrita Arora looks very gorgeous and seductive in this item number. Himesh Reshamiya has done a good job as music composer. There are some other numbers too that will make people sit and watch them instead of running to the loo.

Among actors, it is once again Ajay Devgan eating the bigger chunk of the fame. Though he has done similar kind of action roles in 'Parwana' and 'Qayaamat', he is in a positive role from the very beginning. His performance is hard- hitting and adds one more feather in his cap. He is growing day by day with each film and now has become the most dependable star of the current generation. Abhishek Bachchan too promises that he is still there and also gives a clear message that he is not going to accept a flop hero's tag so easily. He puts his soul and labor to this role and the result is amazing. This is his first film he has done action in totality and now one can see producers lining at his residence for such a role. This guy needs some meaty roles like this and he is going to surprise many for sure. Bipasha Basu is sensuous as always. Though she does not get much to do here, still she leaves her presence felt. Supporting too is just perfect. If Mukesh Tiwari manages to steal the show whenever he comes on screen, it is Pankaj Dheer who becomes the vertex of many happenings. D. Santosh, Sanjay Mishra and Manish Khanna lend good support. On the whole, 'Zameen' is going to be one more successful film of the year and it is a good start for the season too. Other films released with it do not have much to please the viewers and this point too works in its favor.

Ajay Devgan

Abhishek Bachan

COP SUSH IS NOT TAGGED TO HER HERO

Sushmita Sen as a cop in 'Samay' is not tagged to her hero, as had been the practice in Bollywood films in the past. Robby Grewal, the director of the movie, though a first timer, has been bold enough to portray Sushmita as Assistant Commissioner of Police named Malvika Chauhan. She is boss and enjoys support of her subordinates, who are all males. Secondly, Robby Grewal plays obeisance to the Hollywood's 'Hitchcock'. This shows that Grewal is a follower of Hollywood thrillers.

Malvika Chauhan investigates the case of the murder of a businessman named Kapil Sharma. And the postmortem of the dead body of the businessman shows no foreign particle on the body. The motive of the murder is also not known. This means that the murderer leaves no clue. So Sushmita's team reaches a conclusion that the serial killer is on the loose. Again 'Samay' reminds us of 'Silence of the Lambs', because most of the reel is gone into the killer's characteristics, including the manner of investigation, discovery of forensic evidence etc. Sushmita finds this case of tormenting as death. This is a hard stuff of the film

However there is a soft side of the movie too. This comes from the life of the Sushmita Sen. She is a determined cop. She is not ready to compromise with her duty. She can take any risk including that of her life. As in her real life today, so also in the film, she has only her daughter to love even though she is a single mom. Her character is more important than that of her hero, Sushant Singh. The movie revolves around Sushmita.

Malvika Chauhan is accompanied by some honest cops like Inspector Satya (Sushant Singh) and Sub-Inspector Rafique (Dinesh Lamba). As the investigation moves Malvika gets a clue that could serve to catch the murderer. Rajesh Khera surprises by providing the clue. And there is Jackie Shroff providing the much needed twist. When Malvika tries to solve this case another murder takes place. This time it is a well-known actress. By looking at the murder she believes that both the murders have some connection. When the evidence and motive behind the second murder is being uncovered, a third murder takes place. And the victim in this case is a contract killer. Her search leads from one point to another. The trial of this killer and the motive forms the crux of the film. If you find out who is the killer, you need watch this movie, as we don't want to disclose the mystery.

The working style of Sushmita is very realistic and the way she investigates the case is like a real cop. Sushmita Sen does full justice to her part, as she is cast in a challenging role. Sushant Singh's role as her assistant is also appreciated. Jackie Shroff doesn't have much of a scope. Rajesh Khera and Tushar Dalvi's roles are fine too.

Robby Grewal's idea of making the film on such type of a murder mystery is good but he fails to maintain the mystery till the climax. The audiences are not so much happy with climax.

If we move to the other major part of the movie, which is music, this is nothing special though the background score keeps you on edge. The item number does titillate the audience. Sandeep Chowta gives the music, but fails to attract. The cinematography is average. On the whole the movie is good for time pass because of its climax.

RAJA BHAIYA, A HILARIOUS FAMILY ENTERTAINER

Govinda , the king of comedy, is back in action with Kalyan Singh's 'Raja Bhaiya'. A film directed by Raman Kumar, 'Raja Bhaiya' has a title synonymous to 'Raja Babu', Govinda's earlier hit. 'Raja Bhaiya' is said to be one of Govinda's last comedy films and supposedly the "icing on the cake". The cast includes Govinda, Arti Chhabaria, Sadashiv Amrapukar, Ajit Vachhani, Anang Desai, and Sheela Sharma. Nadeem Sharavan and Surendra Sodhi have given the music of the film. Lyrics are by Sameer and Maan Singh Deep.

The filming of the movie was completed in astounding 38 days, which sounds incredible. The backdrops of the film include the beautiful city of Hyderabad and the fast-moving city life of Mumbai. Aarti Chhabria, the female lead, tries hard to give a memorable performance. Her performance in many ways is similar to Sridevi's in 'Sadma' (where she portrays a mentally challenged girl). Govinda's comedy adds sugar 'n' spice to the film, which makes it a hilarious family entertainer.

A hilarious comedy, which revolves around 'Raja Bhaiya', a character played by Govinda. Raja Bhaiya (Govinda) is a character inspired by his earlier hits like 'Raja Babu', 'Bade Miyan Chotey Miyan' etc. Bhaiya from 'Raja Bhaiya' suggests that Govinda is a chap from Uttar Pradesh who talks in Bhojpuri and wears a typical Kurta Pyjama and jacket. This is a love story of a simple village guy and an urban girl who suffers from amnesia (loss of memory). It revolves around the makeup and breakup relationships of the duo. Pratibhaa ( Aarti Chabaria) is a happy go-lucky girl who is brought up by her two uncles -- Sudesh Sawhney ( Anang Desai) and Prem Sawhney ( Ajit Vacchani ) .

A girl who is enjoying her life meets with a car accident on her 21st birthday. This makes her family worried because her death will deprive them of wealth and property. Eventually the girl lands up in Sarangpur village, which is Raja Bhaiya's village. Chhaya and Maya seduce a brahamachari (lifelong bachelor) Raja. His widow mother Dulari brings up Raja. A mamma's boy by nature Raja is benevolent towards one Chaubeyji (Sadashiv Amrapukar) who takes Raja's innocence for granted and makes fool of him. Pratibhaa ( Aarti Chabaria), on the other , is rescued by Raja's mother. Instead of finding girl's parents, the mother brings girl home because the girl has lost her memory. His mother calls her Radha and even insists that the girl stays with them.

So, Radha alias Pratibha ( Aarti Chabria) stays at their house and Raja attempts anything and everything possible to get her out of the house. He even tries to get himself kidnapped by dacoits, but even that fails. However, the more he tries to avoid Radha the closer the girl gets to him. This leads to a point when the mother gets them married in spite of Raja's disapproval. But destiny takes a turn, the rigid orthodox heart of Raja softens towards Radha, as she miraculously saves Raja's mother form fire.

Now, Radha's uncles -- Sudesh and Prem-become restless when they are unable to find their niece. Her uncles announce a prize of one lakh rupees. Chaubeyji informs Prem of her whereabouts. Uncles discover their niece and take her away to Mumbai. Raja decides to bring his wife back home and here the fight begins. This makes the film a hilarious entertainer as Raja disguises himself as Dr. Chandola (played by Rakesh Bedi). Raja wins the heart of the girl and teaches her family a lesson. The film ends on a winning note.

An ordinary film, which has nothing new to offer. A run of the mill story with ordinary performances. Only Govinda shows some promises with his performance, the rest are simply ordinary. Aarti Chabria fails to impress with her acting, which needs polishing. She tries to do a Sridevi act (in 'Sadma') of mentally unstable girl. She neither has the talent nor the versatility of Sridevi to justify the character. She irritates initially. Her motorcycle act looks artificial. It's ridiculous to see mentally unstable girl in designer wear ghagra-choli singing and dancing around trees. No wonder that director Raman Kumar has extracted the best out of Govinda, but the story lacks the pace and spontaneity that Govinda films have shown like in his album. Nadeem Shravan along with guest composer hardly give anything meaningful or entertaining. Music seems to be stale and outdated though Udit Narayan tries to infuse some romantic yearning with 'Tu Jo Hans Ke Muskuratai Hain'. Sunidhi Chauhan gets chirpy with 'Kehta Hai Mera Jiya厖' The rest of the songs are soul-less melodies. Mahendra Verma's action is okay. Choreography of Rekha Chinni Prakash is full of Jhatkas matkas, giving them true colors of Govinda's film.

'AITRAAZ' & DIWALI PUT PRIYANKA ON A NEW HIGH

With 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', being a hit, Priyanka Chopra is on a new high. And this Diwali is going to be special for her as her film 'Aitraaz' releases. We caught up with her on the film and Diwali.

It's a bold role that you do in the film 'Aitraaz'. How are the audiences going to react?

I am very nervous. Yes, it's a bold role where I am very ambitious and because of which I lose my love and then when I find him back he is already married. And how I want him back. So I hope people will like me in this role as I am doing something like this very early in my career.

It seems you and Akshay Kumar's chemistry has hit it off. But is it only on-screen?

I know about these rumors floating around. I just want to say that we look great together on screen and I have a great working relation with him. These rumors fortunately don't disturb me as I just blind them out.

The title song has been a picture in one shot. How difficult was it for you?

It was brilliant choreography. We shot it in an office like set-up. It was shot on Akshay and me. We rehearsed it a couple of times. And it looks really natural and nice.

How important is box-office and collections for you?

It is quite important. But I don't mind even if a film is a flop but my performance is appreciated. At the end of the day every actor signs a film thinking it's going to be a hit. So even I want that all my films should be well received by my audiences.

On Diwali there are a whole lot of other films releasing. Are you scared of competition?

All the films that are releasing on the 12th are of different genres. That's why the audiences are going to have a variety to choose from. And I am sure 'Aitraaz' being a social thriller will definitely attract a sizeable audience.

Which movie are you going to watch on Diwali?

I am going to see 'Mughal-e-Azam'. It's my favorite. I didn't even dream that while I am alive I'd be able to see it in color. But it will be an honor for me to go and see the film, which is probably the most brilliant film of Indian cinema. So I'll see that and, of course, my film.

How are you going to celebrate this Diwali?

Well, I am shooting this Diwali. My parents always said that on an auspicious day and New Year you should do something that you want to do all through the year and therefore I am going to work.

How do you maintain yourself in this festive season, with sweets doing the rounds?

Luckily I don't have a sweet tooth. So I don't eat a lot in the season. But even if I binge I have a routine that I take care of as in a workout. So that helps me stay in shape.

PUNJABI GIRL DARES TAKE RISK

The Punjabi girl Bhumika Chawla entered the glamour world through south Indian cinema. After making a mark there she registered her name as a Bollywood actress through 'Tere Naam'. Her simple and sober role in this film caught the attention of the audience. She was also nominated for some awards because of her performance in this film. But Salman Khan was widely publicized for the success of 'Tere Naam' while everybody was talking about Bhumika. After this film she also made her mark in the industry through 'Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha' and 'Run'. She showed the courage to act opposite Abhishek in 'Run' while most of the established actresses of the industry had denied that offer.

How did you join films?

It happened by chance. I had gone to Mumbai to visit my cousin in summer vacation. There I took part in a beauty contest and won it too luckily. Then I got some ad films followed by a Telugu film 'Yuvakadu'. This film did not do very well but my work was noticed. After this my two films titled 'Khusi' and 'Badri' became super hits. Thus I was considered among one of the superstars in south.

How did you get 'Tere Naam'?

Boni Kapoor was making the remake of 'Khusi'. In the original south film I had played the role of its heroine. Bony Kapoor's friend Satish Kaushik saw that film and liked my work. Before this I had also worked in some ad films with the producer of 'Tere Naam', Sunil Manchanda. So he gave me the offer of 'Tere Naam', which was a remake of south film 'Serthu'. I had seen the role of the heroine in that film. So I accepted the offer.

Didn't you risk your career with a simple role while others are running after bold and glamorous roles?

In 'Tere Naam' I got a very good chance to perform. One doesn't usually get such a chance. I was looking for such a role to start my career in which there would be enormous chance to perform and everybody can notice my work. This happened in 'Tere Naam'.

Do you hesitate in performing glamorous roles?

I have no hesitation in doing glamorous roles. I want to perform roles where I could exhibit all aspects of my acting. I want to perform a glamorous role like that of Urmila in 'Rangeela'. I have already played such a role in Telugu film 'Misamma' which was a hit in south.

Did you feel bad when Salman Khan was given credit for success of 'Tere Naam'?

It is true that I was not given due importance in the publicity of 'Tere Naam'. But I was given some. One thing is essential that one has to act well. If you have performed well then people would definitely notice you.

How have you no other film after the success of 'Tere Naam'?

Success does not mean that one accepts offer of any kind of films. I would not sign those films, which do not have stories of my liking. I believe that even if one does four films in a year, one is successful. So far as 'Tere Naam' is concerned I got a different identity in the industry after this film and also my name was nominated for some awards.

Didn't you take risk by signing 'Run' opposite Abhishek Bachchan though big stars rejected it?

I admit that before 'Run' Abhishek was considered a flop actor. But today he has become a successful one. 'Run' and 'Yuva' like films have brought him glory. I enjoyed working with Abhishek. He is much more humorous than what he looks like. He is a very good actor.

Why did you accept second lead role in 'Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha'?

It is better to remain silent about such things rather than commenting on them. I would not say anything about it.

After getting certain position in Bollywood would you continue with south Indian cinema?

Even today I am getting offers from the south. But I give priority to those offers that provide me strong roles.

KAREENA FLOPS, BUT CHARGES HIGH

The younger Kapoor girl Kareena has not yet proved a hit actress though she charges a very high fee for her acting. Besides, she is very proud of her acting talent. Her latest movie Priyadarshan's 'Hulchul' with Akshaye Khanna has, however, earned a name for her performance. Even the movie critics say that she is the only ever fresh heroine of Bollywood. She feels that any other woman could not be hotter than her in real life though that woman may be hotter than her in reel life.

What would you do if you don't get a positive response from your boyfriend?

This is no problem for me. I would force her to love me. If necessary, I shall dance and, cook for him. I can do anything to win him.

What would you do if he doesn't allow you to wear sexy dresses?

In that case, I would wear those dresses so that he is stunned to see me in that dress. Really, once he sees me in that dress, he would never stop me from putting on those dresses.

What would you do if your parents object to your meeting your boyfriend though both of you love each other too much?

I believe that you should leave no stone turned to get what you want. There is no need to waste time in seeking approval for such a proposal. In fact, nothing can prevent you for doing it.

Could you change the family by pretending that you like it though you dislike it?

I cannot do it in real life. On the screen I may. However, I know many women who have done so in their real life.

Could there be any woman hotter than you?

Yes, one could be in reel life, but not in real life. To be hot is not a difficult thing. One could be hot as and when one wants. I can do anything for my favorite partner.

How come you are considered as fresh as ever among Bollywood heroines?

Yes, I got a lot of compliments for my performance in 'Chameli' and 'Yuva'. Really speaking, I am the only heroine who is ready to act with any hero at any time.

What's funny with you?

I am a star from my first film though I am a flop even now. I don't understand why it's so with me.

LARA: NOTHING WRONG IN BIG BANNER FILMS

Lara Dutta is both beautiful and lucky. She has been more successful than her contemporaries. She claims that she has been more decent in her performances as compared to other new faces in the industry, and has yet shot to fame bagging more hits. Though she has acted in 'Andaaz', 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost', 'Khakee', 'Rudraksh' 'Masti', 'Aan' and ' Bardaasht', only 'Andaaz' and 'Masti' have done well at the box office. In 'Khakee' she does an item number only. Despite this she is counted among the few successful new heroines in Mumbai. She has her hands full with a lot of film offers and with important roles. We met with her recently.

Aren't you after big banners and big money in Bollywood?

I come from a family, which cares less for money. Still, money is important for everyone. Big banners give you a big break as well as good money. What's wrong if I do big banner films.

How do you justify your brief role in 'Aan' and an item song in 'Khakee'?

Yes. My role in 'Aan' was brief, but I had signed it earlier than 'Andaaz'. That role benefited me a lot. Now I am getting a good role in Feroz Nadiadwala's forthcoming movie. The new role is better than 'Aan's.

Is it an accident or your firm decision to enter films soon after winning the beauty contest?

I found out that mostly beauty contest winners chose either modeling or film as their career. However, both of them are glamorous. Modeling doesn't provide us as much fame or money as do films. So I decided to enter films.

Have you decided to be a typed girl as your roles in Inder Kumar's 'Masti' and Boney Kapoor's 'No Entry' have been sexy?

I do every role assigned to me to the best of my ability. I am keen neither on doing item numbers nor on sexy roles though. I accept every assignment as a challenging one. I liked the 'Masti' role and did it with full heart in it. It has been appreciated. The role in ' No Entry' is much different from 'Masti's. This character is more emotional than sexy. I am sure the movie watchers would like it and turn crazy.

Why are you repeating in 'Zurm' though your pairing with Bobby Deol in 'Bardaasht' of E. Niwas was not appreciated?

My role of a lawyer in 'Bardaashat' was widely liked. However, it didn't do well at the box office. So I did not benefit much from it. However, the critics would be silenced after watching me in 'Zurm' with Bobby Deol. I hope 'Zurm' would usher in good days for us.

Aren't you feeling insecure in 'Ailaan' because of Amisha Patel, and therefore begging bigger role from Vikram Bhatt?

No, I never thought of insecurity in 'Ailaan' because of Amisha, who has a bigger role in the movie. I accepted this offer because of the comeback of Mithunda into films. I have been Mithun's fan for long, and had cherished a desire to work with him.

Has Prakash Jha signed you for 'Rajniti'?

Yes, Prakash Jha came to me with this proposal. However, I have neither accepted it nor rejected it so far.

What's the role in 'Rajniti'?

It is the role of today's Draupadi. I shall study the script and then decide on it.

Which are your forthcoming movies?

I have been working for several movies. They are 'Bewafa', 'Zurm', 'Ailaan', 'No Entry', 'Sipahi', 'Hera Pheri' and 'Ranveer'.

When she was asked about her marriage plan with Nadia, Preity said, "As soon as we decide to become partners in life, we shall immediately get married." At present Preity is concentrating on her filmi career.
