Mizuno, who supply the Blue Samurai with some of their gear, have said that the yellow boots worn star man Keisuke Honda are proving so popular with fans that some stores are running out.
“Honda’s goal was impressive and it will definitely contribute to our sales,” said the Mizuno head Kimura-san.
Apparently not only that, but the World Cup has boosted Mizuno’s shares too – no doubt helped by Honda’s yellow boots. I wonder if there will be a run on blue gloves as worn by Honda last night too?!

Japan v. Paraguay Preview
Just think back a few weeks, and remember what you were feeling about Japan’s chances in this World Cup. Not very positive I’m guessing? Three defeats in the group? Many people expected that.
And remembering what you thought only a couple of weeks ago, now look where Japan are now about to face Paraguay in the World Cup round of 16, having won two of their group games and narrowly lost the other to a top nation only thanks to one individual error.
Takeshi Okada has got this team playing what was a new formation at the start of the tournament, and whether it was by design or by accident has stumbled upon a system that works for this group of players.
Against Cameroon and Holland it was very defensive and containing. In the opening match that was sufficient since Japan got a first half goal through Keisuke Honda, and we could then play the containing game. Against the Dutch some top quality attacking players were kept well in check quite a lot until a spell early in the second half when the Dutch scored.
But then came the match with Denmark, which despite playing in the same formation began quite openly. Japan struggled to settle while Denmark went for it early on. We all know what happened after that with the free-kicks and some lovely attacking play, but let’s not forget that Japan were far more open at the back in that game than they had been in the previous two.
Also in all the euphoria of last Thursday, it should be noted that the way the match panned out played more and more into Japan’s hands tactically speaking. Having gone behind, and then two goals behind, Denmark had to attack and that allowed Japan the space upfield to break through again.
But Japan still committed forwards more than I’d expected, and did give Denmark opportunities. This openness probably won’t be repeated against Paraguay. For one they have some excellent strikers, but also they have a defensive solidity that won’t leave themselves as exposed as Denmark did.
However, Japan did play extremely well against Denmark and that was no small achievement.
Paraguay won their group thanks to a 1-1 draw with Italy, a 2-0 win over Slovakia and a 0-0 draw with New Zealand. The only one of these that I saw in full was their opening match with Italy. In that one Paraguay played quite well and not only contained Italy but impressed in attacking them too. This was before we all realised that Italy were struggling of course.
Italy only came back into the match after adding some midfield solidity in the second half. This suggests to me that ball retention in the midfield could be vital for Japan tomorrow, and I expect Paraguay’s defensive strength to keep Japan’s chances to a premium.
I said it before the Denmark match and was wrong, but I do still think that Japan’s solid formation should lead to a cagey match. Japan’s defence has been quite strong so far, but will have to be on their toes against Paraguay’s strike force probably led by Nelson Valdez.
Again I would be surprised to see any changes in the Japanese side. The system is looking solid, and Japan are proving tough to beat. Yuki Abe is vital to the system, if not an obvious stand out man, by shielding the defence while also allowing the creative players a bit of freedom when appropriate.
Against Denmark, Honda took a lot of the headlines but there was an excellent performance from Daisuke Matsui too, and Yasuhito Endo had his best performance so far having been fairly anonymous previously.
Defensively, the team are performing well as a unit and it is crucial for Japan’s hopes for this to continue. The same could be said about Japan’s tight pressing game. The energy of this has impressed many, and it is key to stopping the opposition from playing by denying them time and space. Paraguay are similar in this respect too so it could be fairly tight.
Paraguay have tended to sit deep defensively too, and soak up the pressure of the opposition. Will both teams do the same leading to stalemate? Or will Japan press on and go for it?
Paraguay’s midfield is unspectacular but solid. I would suggest that Japan do possess the skills to be able to create against Paraguay, but may look to only utilise those skills on occasion not wanting to be too exposed at the back.
Takeshi Okada had some comments on the upcoming match…
“They’re a team that knows how to play when it really counts. All South American teams are not necessarily the same, but Paraguay have a very similar game to Chile. They’ve got a very solid back line, they push forward in numbers and switch quickly from defense to attack.”
Marcus Tulio Tanaka, seemingly recovered sufficiently from a back problem, added…
“They will be trying everything to rile us. They are smart. Against New Zealand they were not taking risks and were just waiting to pounce on mistakes.”
History Time
This will be the 7th meeting between Japan and Paraguay, and the second to be a competitive international. Japan have 1 win, Paraguay have 2 and there have been 3 draws. Japan’s solitary victory came in 2001 in Sapporo with a 2-0 win.
The two sides met two years prior to that in the 1999 Copa America group stages, hosted by Paraguay, when Japan fell to a 4-0 defeat. Two of the goals that day were scored by Roque Santa Cruz who is in the current World Cup squad but may start from the bench.
Previous Meeting
The most recent meeting was a 0-0 draw in a friendly in Saitama in May 2008.
