Security officer jailed for bomb hoax call, threat to kill painter
By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent
A SECURITY officer who made a bomb hoax call and threatened to kill a painter was given a total of 24 months' jail on Wednesday.
John Shankaran Kunyikkanan, 30, pleaded guilty to the two charges. Another criminal intimidation charge was taken into consideration.
He called the police emergency hotline on March 21 saying that there was a bomb at Tekka market. He added that there was a murder there and to 'send the police here now'.
The court heard that police resources were despatched to the scene but nothing incriminating was found. The call was traced to his mother's pre-paid card and she confirmed that she shared the mobile phone with him.
On the other charge, Shankaran was at home last Dec 19 when he shouted at a painter on a gondala outside his Toa Payoh East flat that he would kill him if any paint dripped onto his window.
The frightened 26-year-old victim lowered the gondola and informed his superiors. Pleading for leniency, Shankaran said he was sorry. He said he was under the influence of liquor at the time of the offences.
District Judge Bala Reddy said a lot of resources were wasted as a result of his action. There was a need to impose a deterrent sentence not only to deter him but others from making such mischievous calls, said the judge.
Mr Shankaran could have been fined up to $50,000 or jailed for up to seven years or both for transmitting a false message.
Criminal intimidation carries a maximum penalty of seven years or more. |

Man jailed for hitting mother with chair
AN UNEMPLOYED man who assaulted his mother for giving hot porridge to his niece was jailed for four months on Wednesday.
Hong Kia Cheng, 43, pleaded guilty to punching Madam Lim Guan Eng, 67, and assaulting her with a wooden dining chair at their flat in Clementi on Aug 25 last year.
A district court heard that Madam Lim had told her five-year-old granddaughter to eat the porridge slowly as it was hot.
Shortly after, Hong scolded his mother for giving the girl the hot bowl of porridge. He then punched her on the head and swung the chair at her.
Madam Lim who used her hands to block the assault suffered a fractured bone on her left arm.
Hong's lawyer Pratap Kishan said the mother had forgiven his son and they had reconciled.
He said Hong regretted his actions and had learnt a bitter lesson.
Hong could have been jailed for up to one year and/or fined up to $1,000 for voluntarily causing hurt. |

S'pore lawyer pleads guilty in HK court to hotel theft
By Diana Othman
RETURNING: Choy Chee Yean received a suspended 12-month jail term.
A SINGAPOREAN lawyer from one of the top firms here has pleaded guilty in a Hong Kong court to stealing from a hotel room.
Choy Chee Yean, an arbitration lawyer and partner at Rajah & Tann, was given a suspended 12-month jail term yesterday by a district court there, which means he will not have to go to jail.
The Straits Times understands that Choy, 40, a father of two girls aged seven and nine, will return to Singapore in a few days' time when he gets his passport from the Hong Kong police.
In January, Choy was arrested after stealing HK$9,500 (S$1,650) worth of electronic items from an unlocked hotel room. The loot included a cellphone, a personal digital assistant and a Bluetooth earpiece.
The lawyer, who reportedly earns $700,000 a year, was on a business trip and stayed at the Novotel Citygate Hong Kong hotel.
When an Italian businessman staying on the 19th floor of the four-star hotel returned to find his room burglarised, the hotel security reviewed its CCTV footage and saw Choy leaving the room with the stolen items.
They later found the items in his room.
Choy's lawyer had submitted psychiatric reports saying he had been suffering from clinical depression for three years and had recently experienced a 'major depressive incident'. Choy's depression was due to an unhappy marriage and a daughter who had dyslexia.
Sworn statements from his church friends, colleagues and even clients were also submitted as character references. Choy's wife was also in court.
District Judge Patrick Li said Choy 'was not fully aware' of his actions.
In noting his 'high professional standing and impeccable character', Judge Li said: 'It does not pay for him to take such a great risk and gain so little.'
A statement from Rajah & Tann said Choy's decision to plead guilty was 'in keeping with his integrity and upright character'.
It is not known at this stage if the law firm, or even the Law Society, will take any action against Choy. |

SKIM PELABURAN PALSU SASARKAN MELAYU
POLIS SIASAT LEPAS TERIMA ADUAN PEMBANTU DALANG
Oleh
Rosebi Mohd Sah

'Tapi kami yakin ia mempunyai potensi dipasarkan ke negara-negara lain seperti Malaysia,' kata Penolong Pengurus Jenama, Freshening Singapore, Cik Jojo Tan.

Wife of Venture Corp CEO acquitted with warning over slapping incident
By Satish Cheney, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 24 April 2008 1107 hrs
Madam Tan arrives in court, accompanied by her husband, Venture Corp CEO Wong Ngit Leong
SINGAPORE: The wife of a Singapore tycoon accused of slapping a Singapore Airlines stewardess was acquitted by the court on Thursday.
The incident between 61-year-old Tan Siew Hoon and 25-year-old Then Jiamin occurred on board an SIA flight to Tokyo last September. She had slapped the SIA stewardess for allegedly flirting with her husband.
Madam Tan was given a warning, after the prosecution withdrew the charge against her.
Madam Tan's lawyer, Ravinderpal Singh, said they made a representation to the prosecution, who acceded to it.
Madam Tan could have been jailed up to one year or fined S$1,000, or both.
Madam Tan was all smiles when she arrived in court on Thursday morning, accompanied by her husband, Venture Corp CEO Wong Ngit Leong. The couple declined to speak to the media after the acquittal.
Madam Tan recently settled a civil claim, for unspecified damages for 'emotional and mental distress', filed by the stewardess.
The case had attracted much attention, as many were curious what the penalty will be for such an action.
Some said Madam Tan could have been acquitted with just a warning because there had been an out-of-court settlement with the stewardess.
However, many are still surprised by the court's decision. Some said this may send a wrong signal to the public.
Singapore Airlines did not directly comment on the decision of the court, but said it will continue to support its cabin crew if they are mistreated by customers. - 938LIVE/CNA/ir/ls |

AWOL NSman Dave Teo to go on trial in High Court from 7 to 18 July
By May Wong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 24 April 2008 2008 hrs
Dave Teo Ming
SINGAPORE: The case of NSman Dave Teo, who stole an army rifle, has been set for a High Court hearing from 7 to 18 July.
At a court session on Thursday, the prosecution provided a list of 36 witnesses, who are scheduled to appear at the trial.
Teo is currently facing three charges of stealing a rifle from his army camp, illegally possessing eight 'live' bullets and carrying a knife in a public place.
The 20-year-old army corporal was arrested on 3 September last year at Orchard Cineleisure, a day after he went missing from the Mandai Hill Camp.
Teo has been in the Queenstown Remand Prison since his arrest. His lawyer, K Mathialahan, said he intends to make submissions to get the charges reduced.
Teo's friend, Ong Boon Jun, who did not report the NSman for possessing a stolen rifle and bullets, was sentenced last month to six-and-a-half years' jail and six strokes of the cane.
Ong, a 22-year-old pimp, was charged with being in Teo's company while he had the illegal items. The two of them had been in Geylang's Champagne Hotel and Teo's actions had sparked off a manhunt.

Every fourth Saturday of May is 'Family Day Out'
By Hiroshi Limmell, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 24 April 2008 1944 hrs
SINGAPORE: Starting this year, every fourth Saturday of May will be designated as Singapore's 'Family Day Out'.
This is the latest initiative by the National Family Council to encourage Singaporeans to spend more time with their family.
63-year-old Teresa Quah, a retiree, said: "It's a very good idea to bring the family closer... help them communicate with each other."
The National Family Week was launched 22 years ago, but not many people seem to be aware of such a campaign, going by a straw poll conducted by Channel NewsAsia.
To raise the profile of the National Family Week, organisers have decided to give their month-long campaign a new name. It is now called the National Family Celebrations, and campaign activities will be launched on 24 May at a carnival at the Singapore Flyer.
Organisers will be giving away 15,000 free tickets for rides on the Singapore Flyer as well as other attractions. There will also be special family packages at other places such as the Singapore Zoo and Jurong Bird Park.
Yeo Chuan Hong, a father of two, said: "This year, families can get together in their own time and take the extra effort to be closer."
Over the years, activities organised for the family campaign have been expanded to last for almost a month.
More information on the special family packages are available online at www.nationalfamilycelebrations.sg. |
