Gunners profits up but uncertainty remains
LONDON: Arsenal registered an increase of more than 20 percent in pre-tax profit for the second half of last year but warned yesterday that the slump in London property values was likely to hit their finances this year.
Figures for the six months to November 30, 2008 showed the Gunners made pre-tax profit of £24.5m, up from £20m for the corresponding period a year earlier.
The 2006 move to the 60,000-capacity Emirates Stadium continues to underpin the club’s profitability with matchday turnover up £3.3m to £44.4m, while broadcasting revenues rose £4.5m to £28.9m.
The current economic crisis, which has hit the City of London’s financial sector particularly hard, has, however, clouded the outlook for future growth in match day profits with big companies taking the knife to corporate entertainment and many ordinary supporters struggling to meet ticket prices which are among the highest in England.
Uncertainty over the redevelopment of Arsenal’s old Highbury stadium as a residential complex is another cloud on the Gunners’ financial horizon.
The construction of 186 flats on the site of the stadium—parts of which have been preserved—is close to completion at a cost of £76.7m.
Only £58.1m of that total had been covered by agreed sales as of November 30 and the club admitted that loans related to the project would have to be refinanced.
“There is a probable need to extend the term of the Highbury Square bank loan and discussions with the banking syndicate are at a preliminary stage,” the club acknowledged.
Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said: “Clearly there are some significant challenges ahead of us, both on and off the pitch, over the closing months of this financial year and beyond.”
He added, however, that the uncertainty would not affect manager Arsene Wenger’s ability to buy new players, if he deemed that necessary, citing the recent acquisition of Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin.
“The UK property market has been particularly affected by the economic downturn and, inevitably, this has had an impact on the group’s own property development activities in the period,” Hill-Wood continued.
“The financial arrangements for the group’s property activities are separate and largely operate independently from the financing of the football business.
“This has always been a key aspect of our financial structure for the group and is intended to provide us with the ability to develop the football team as with, for example, the signing of Andrei Arshavin, irrespective of the difficult conditions in which our property business is having to operate.”
Player, 9, dies after touchline accident
MADRID: Spanish giants Atletico Madrid announced yesterday the death of nine-year-old junior player Diego Alcala Rivero in Madrid’s 12 de Octubre hospital after an accident. The boy had been in the hospital’s intensive care unit since Saturday, after the metal roof of the Atletico junior team’s bench fell on him during a match in the Madrid suburb of Las Rozas.
He was rushed to hospital with severe head injuries. A message on Atletico’s official webite said “the club would like to publicly express its gratitude for the inumerable demonstrations of support and affection received from all over Spain. Diego, rest in peace.”
There will be a minute’s silence for him before Atletico’s home game against leaders Barcelona on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Norwegian and Swedish football authorities yesterday announced a joint bid to stage the Euro 2016 football championship.
The continent’s premier football event has only once been held in Scandinavia when Sweden were hosts in 1992 but in those days only eight teams were involved whereas in 2016 it will be 24 teams.
France have already announced their interest in hosting the event for the first time since 1984 while Scotland is considering a joint bid with Wales and Northern Ireland. |

Almunia wants Gunners balance
Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia is hoping that Arsenal can strike a perfect balance as they look to push on in the Premier League.
In recent weeks, the Gunners have struggled to find the net, with three of their last four league games ending 0-0. Two of those matches were at Arsenal's very own Emirates Stadium.
Whilst distinctly failing to shine in the final third, Arsenal have kept five successive clean sheets in all competitions.
Although goalkeeper Almunia is delighted with how the Arsenal defence is performing, he is acutely aware of the need to adopt a more even-handed approach if Arsene Wenger's men are to seal automatic entry into next season's Champions League competition.
"It's the only good thing that we can see from these kind of games (Sunderland) when we are dropping points, we are still getting clean sheets," the Spaniard told the official Arsenal programme.
"I think the team in general defensively are doing very well. We now need to find that nice balance where we are tight at the back but get the goals.
"That is what a team like Manchester United has been so successful with this season, they have always been getting the clean sheet and then just managing to get the goal.
"They have the confidence to get that minimum one goal. We have to get that confidence back.
"Before we probably used to create a few more chances and also we would finish those chances quicker. Now we are spending a bit more time to get a final shot.
With certain sections of the Arsenal faithful far from happy with the Gunners' recent displays, Alumnia accepts that both he and his teammates have a duty to both get results and entertain.
"The players realise that the fans deserve more from us and maybe some of the players are feeling more pressure at the moment at home because we are not winning games.
"I know the fans deserve more from the team than 0-0 scores." |
