Bayern sign Italian striker Toni
[quote]MUNICH: Bayern Munich have signed Italian World Cup winner Luca Toni from Fiorentina in a deal worth 18mil euros, it was reported on Saturday. The 29-year-old striker, who has scored 12 goals in 27 internationals, has signed a five-contract and will reportedly earn 5.5mil euros per season according to German magazine Sport-Bild. The forward is believed to have made his decision on Friday evening and chosen the German giants over European rivals AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan, who were also bidding for his signature. Having been part of Italy抯 2006 World Cup squad, Toni scored two goals in the quarter-final win over Ukraine and scored both goals in Italy抯 2-0 victory against Scotland in last month抯 Euro 2008 qualifier. Fourth-placed Bayern are also courting German international Miroslav Klose, from their Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen, and last week met with the 67 times capped striker, who has scored 33 goals for his country. After Bayern were beaten 2-1 at home by Hamburg on Saturday, manager Uli Hoeness refused to confirm or deny the story. 揥e will be in a position to finalise our squad in the next three or four weeks, but I will not comment on names at present, |

Hitzfeld ready to 'rest' keeper KahnThu 03 May, 04:15 PM
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn will sit out this weekend's trip to Borussia Monchengladbach, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has revealed. The 37-year-old will make way for 22-year-old understudy Michael Rensing, although Hitzfeld has refuted speculation Kahn has been dropped, instead saying the veteran is having a break. "I have decided that Oliver Kahn will stay at home and Michael Rensing will play," Hitzfeld declared on Thursday. "He has deserved the chance to play another 90 minutes. "However, I am not doing this to put them into a heated competition. Kahn has a guaranteed place next year and Michael Rensing knows that." Hitzfeld is preparing to ring in several changes with both the Bundesliga title and Champions League qualification out of Bayern's reach. Several youngsters are expected to earn some match practice against a Gladbach side who are already relegated. "We are in a transitional period and this is the chance for the reserves to show what they are capable of," said Hitzfeld. "I expect to see pride in the team." With just two matches remaining, Bayern are fourth in the table - seven points adrift of third-placed Werder Bremen who hold the last Champions League place. |

Klose sent off as Espanyol reach UEFA Cup final
Thu May 3, 5:56 PM ET
BERLIN (AFP) - German striker Miroslav Klose capped a week to forget on Thursday as his first-half dismissal did little to help 10-man Werder Bremen in their 2-1 UEFA Cup semi-final defeat to Espanyol.
Winning the semi-final 5-1 on aggregate, the Barcelona-based Espanyol resumed the complete control they had enjoyed in the first leg and will contest the final in Glasgow, Scotland, on May 16 against fellow Spaniards FC Sevilla.
Bremen, faced with a 3-0 deficit to make up from their first-leg trouncing, got off to a flying start with a goal after just four minutes, but went down to 10-men when Klose was shown two yellow cards in just 18 first-half minutes.
Second-half goals by striker Ferran Corominas and defender Jesus Maria Lacruz killed off Bremen's chances, but their coach, Thomas Schaaf, took the defeat - their third in three games - with good grace.
He said: "We have to take the defeat on the chin, because we were already 3-0 down from the first leg.
"We gave it our best shot and the team played well. But I didn't understand a few of the referee's decisions.
"We did a lot of planning for this game and we tried everything even with ten-men, but we were always fighting the tide."
The Germans started well and pulled back a goal when striker Hugo Almeida beat Spanish goal-keeper Gorka Iraizoz with a left-footed shot after just four minutes.
But the dream start soon turned into a nightmare night for his striking partner Klose, who has had a woeful week after his side added Sunday's 3-2 Bundesliga defeat at Arminia Bielefeld to the 3-0 drubbing in Spain a week ago.
Having publicly apologised to his club and its fans for a secret transfer meeting with Bayern Munich officials late last week with 15 million euros rumoured to be on offer, the 28-year-old was sent off after just twenty minutes.
The top-scorer at last year's World Cup announced on Wednesday he will be staying at Werder next season despite Bayern Munich's best efforts, but he did little to endear himself to his home fans.
Klose was booked for a foul after just two minutes and was handed a second in harsh circumstances for a hand-ball as his side went down a men, but still held the 1-0 lead at the break.
Espanyol famously let a 3-0 first-leg lead slip in the 1988 UEFA Cup final against Bayer Leverkusen, when they lost the return-leg 3-0 and were beaten on penalties, but there was to be no repeat of that dramatic night.
The Spaniards were back on level terms soon after the interval when striker Corominas added to his first-leg goal with a left-footed shot after 50 minutes.
And the Spanish made it 2-1 on the night when defender Lacruz scored with a header after 62 minutes to seal the win. |
