ROAD FROM 'FOOTPATH' TOO FAR FOR AFTAB

There are at least two production houses where camera does not stop rolling and the lights are never switched off. Other than Ram Gopal Verma's film factory, there are Bhatt brothers who keep on making films under their separate banners. While Verma's films delve more into technical aspects of filmmaking, Bhatt brothers make films on social norms and complexities. But, one thing is common in both camps; they keep on bringing in new talents in almost in all their films. 'Footpath', directed by Vikram Bhatt, walks on the path of love, friendship, passion, betrayal and jealousy. After 'Raaz' producer Mukesh Bhatt has joined hands with Tips Music.

It was 'Raaz' that gave Bollywood a much-needed push last year and also brought back horror film trend in Hindi cinema. In that way, "Footpath' is not trendsetter. 'Footpath' also shows that whatever progress Bollywood makes in the treatment of stories, love and betrayal are going to be integral part as it makes the content relate to the audience more easily. This film also makes a sort of start of second innings for Aftab Shivdasani who had gone into self-imposed exile for some time. Last week he stole the show in 'Hungama' and now in 'Footpath' he moves on more confidently. Before 'Hungama' he was also part of 'Darna Mana Hai'. Not many actors have given three continuous releases during the last few years. Isn't it a record by Aftab Shivdasani ?

'Footpath' begins with forgotten streets and their inhabitants of Mumbai. This is the story of three friends. Arjun (Aftab Shivdasani) looks tough, but is sweet like honey at heart. Raghu (Emraan Hashmi) is the crux of this trio who can do anything for the friendship. Then, there is Shekhar (Rahul Dev) too. All the three have been born and brought up in the same society and locality of Mumbai. They have learnt lessons of life on their own, and their lives are full of joy and happiness. But, the destiny brings havoc for him. Arjun loses his father, who was a man of principle. Arjun's friends want to take a revenge of his father's death. They do it, but Arjun has to suffer this too. Finally, Arjun is forced to leave Mumbai for the fear of police. He takes refuge in the streets of Delhi away from his friends and childhood love (Bipasha Basu) Sanjana. But faith has something else in store for him. He has been hiding in Delhi for almost 12 years in recluse, but police manages to find him out, and forces him into a mission, which is full of betrayal, hate and falsehood against his own childhood friends. A dangerous game begins where life, love and friendship is at stake.

'Footpath' meets the challenge of 'Tere Naam' at the box office. If it is Salman Khan who presents life in different shades in 'Tere Naam', Aftab Shivdasani takes lead in 'Footpath'. The film presents him in a superb role; those who had written him off may now look at his volatile performance in this film. He carries most part of the film on his own. Though, the chemistry among the trio does not impress a lot, Aftab too tries to make things set right. Bhatt brothers have given a chance to Emraan Hashmi, and he is the weakest of the tri. Despite many efforts made in writing his role, his physique and his dialogue delivery doesn't support him. Rahul Dev as Shekhar is as usual; he has those fixed emotions on his face that confuse people as to what he wants to say. Bipasha Basu sizzles again. People come to see her figure and she does not let them down. Bipasha looks impressive but still struggles when it comes to act.

The film totally belongs to director Vikram Bhatt. His plans to present the film with dark shade in almost every frame make the setting for the film perfect. His camera movements and plot points are well worked and make the narration look better. His father cinematographer Pravin Bhatt aptly assists Vikram Bhatt. The father-son duo succeeds in giving the film its desired look. The film also has Mahesh Bhatt's flavor in treatment. Intense and love making scenes involving Bipasha Basu have become a part of Bhatt's films. However, they are losing charm now. Mahesh Bhatt needs to look for other ways of presenting Bipasha's sensuousness on screen. Maybe he is not watching more of Hollywood films. Moreover, 'Footpath' has a very weak music score. It was a combination of Sameer and Nadeem-Shravan that had gained an initial hype for 'Raaz'. But, this time the magic hasn't worked, as there has hardly been any song that has clicked. The film has met with mixed reactions and its fate now depends only on mouth publicity.

A LATE ARRIVAL MARS THE CHARMS OF ABHISHEK'S FLICK

Though people have stopped counting number of flop films that Junior Bachchan aka Abhishek Bachchan has given till date, his latest film 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost' releases incidentally just when his one time ex-fianc頩s getting married to some one else. No doubt, it will add to his pain if 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost' fails. The film has opened to a lackluster opening though.

The film also gives a signal that viewers are not interested in watching Junior B alone on the silver screen. And, Abhishek too has understood it. He has, therefore, started doing mutistarrers. Had he been more realistic and chosen films like ' Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost' from the day one, the going for him would have been smoother. The failure of his last few films have proved curse for 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost'. Despite being an average but brilliantly executed film, it will find it very difficult to sail across the box-office. 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost' was originally scheduled for a May 16 release and was also to premiered at the International Indian Film Academy awards ceremony in Johannesburg, South Africa, along with his father Amitabh Bachchan's 'Armaan', but yeh ho na saka.

'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost' is a story of the people of India who even in this 21st century live without electricity and such like things. This is the tale of a city guy Kanji (Abhishek Bachchan) who comes to meet his grandfather (Snehal Lakhia) in a village. Making this village a symbol, first time director Apoorva Lakhia presents a story on Indian screen that will attract more people in metros than in smaller towns of the country. The people of India have become addict to the escapist cinema. Not many directors, including the big ones, have tried to make a film on the problems of a common man. On this note, its director needs an openhearted ovation. Back to the story, Kanji's grandfather lives in a village that got electricity only recently. Kanji brings with him a mysterious gift that creates a lot of speculation, ultimately leading to conflicts within the village. Kanji meets the seductive lasso Kesar aka KC (Lara Dutta) in this village. In her eyes, Kanji would find a world of his love and would forget everything around him. But people of the village will not take it easy. So, they fight over this issue and get divided in two groups. There are people who want to see more and more of things that Kanji has brought from the city. But others think Kanji has brought things, which would lead to adultering their untouched surroundings. The fight goes on endlessly, but will Kanji be able to win their hearts.

The film has a treatment like a film made overseas and that is not without any reason. Its director Aporva Lakhia has worked with the likes of director Ang Lee, as his assistant in films like 'The Ice Storm' (Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tobey Maguire, Elijah Wood, Christina Ricci), with director Andrew Davis in 'The Perfect Murder' (Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow, Viggo Mortensen) and also as assistant to director Mira Nair in 'The Perez Family' (Alfred Molina, Marisa Tomei, Angelica Huston). His credentials also include working as assisting director to Ashutosh Gowariker in the Oscar-nominated 'Lagaan'. 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost' is like a dream come true for him.

'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost' was touted as the big ticket for Abhishek Bachchan for stardom, but the film again puts him in a box. Abhishek Bachchan has tried hard to enact his father's role as the latter did in 'Saudagar' but for Abhishek it must have been a Herculean task to play Kanji on screen. Here, he is seen in a new get up and his interaction with simpletons of village do raise many hilarious situations. He tries hard to meet the expectations. But the film falls short of the requirements of the present day's box office. Abhishek's role of Kanji is not well designed and it leaves more than desired from Abhishek. But, it is Lara Dutta who comes as a visual treat in this film. She oozes lot of oomph in the film. After a modern girl in 'Andaaz, she plays a village belle and looks damn attractive in her skimpy outfits. There are at least four artistes from 'Lagaan' namely, Akhilendra Mishra, Yashpal Sharma, Aditya Lakhia and Dayashanker Pandey. All these and other supporting stars work very aptly.

Behind the scenes, Apoorva's drama in the desert of Jaisalmer is mostly a family affair. His mother Kinnari Pannikar has designed some of Lara Dutta's outfits. His aunt Meera Lakhia has worked as the production designer and his cousin Aditya and uncle Snehal are also seen facing the camera, while cousin Ashish is his assistant. And, Apoorva's younger brother Abhijeet has done the storyboard and stepfather John Pannikar has shot the movie stills. The film has been shot in and around Jaisalmer, and presents the desert city more beautifully than ever-in Bollywood films. However, the film falls flat in the field of music. Though there are three music directors, Anu Malik, Ranjit Barot and Amar Mohile, none has come out with a single hit number. More than content it is the handling of the subject that leaves much to be done to make 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost' a hit film at the box office.

AND, FINALLY ABHISHEK BACHCHAN HAS ARRIVED!

No one expected such a mad rush for this film 'Kuch Naa Kaho' on the first day. May be it was a rush of teachers who chose for a vacation on Teacher's day and made the film go house full and seem like a super box office success. With Junior B Abhishek Bachchan having been written off as a flop star son in the Hindi film industry, there was little hope that the turnout would be this spectacular. Even time-tested directors like J.P.Dutta and Raj Kanwar had failed to give him a career lift. It is a sad story really because the audience remembers very well that Abhishek's father the legendary Amitabh Bachchan gave his first solo super hit in 'Zanzeer' after a series of flops in the beginning of his career. But for some odd reason people wanted a hit from Junior B right from his first film. Even a lady with the Midas touch, Aishwarya Rai, failed to give life to 'Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke'.

Listen, but take a long breath before you repeat all those comments for Abhishek Bachchan has finally arrived. After a sober performance in 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon', Abhishek Bachchan most likely is about to see the first solo hit of his career in 'Kuch Na Kaho'. If everything goes right for him, this film directed by debutant Rohan Sippy, son of famous director Ramesh Sippy, will prove that if Abhishek Bachchan is given roles matching his persona, physique and body language, he may be catapulted to the front bench of successful stars of Bollywood.

'Kuch Naa Kaho' is a story of two misfits in life. First is Raj (Abhishek Bachchan). Living in New York with his mother Dr. Malhotra (Suhasini Muley), Raj is a very practical person in life. He sees no harm in making fool of others as long as it serves his purpose. He meets Namrata (Aishwarya Rai) at the New York airport and makes a fool of her to get the last seat on the India-bound flight. He is in a hurry to reach the engagement of his cousin and to his utter shock, Namrata happens to be a friend of his cousin. They meet in odd situations and land in a forced association as Raj's uncle appoints Namrata as his escort and also gives her the responsibility to find a suitable match for Raj. But Raj is no mood for marriage. He just hates the idea of arranged love. While rejecting one girl after another by cooking up comical situations, Raj finally feels that he has started loving Namrata. He is about to disclose his feelings for her but when he reaches out to do so, he comes to know that Namrata is not only married but also the mother of a son. Apparently her husband has left her and nobody knows as to where he is now.

Raj's life seems to be shattered but he faces this situation bravely and makes a way to Namrata's heart through her son. Eventually Namrata too accepts that she loves Raj and they finally decide to tie the knot. Another jolt comes for Raj in the form of Namrata's husband who returns to the scene after seven years and is very committed to have his wife and his son back. Once again, Raj accepts the decision of destiny. He suppresses his feelings and tries to unite Namrata's family. But, will he succeed in doing so? What will happen when Namrata's husband comes to know that behind his back Raj was seeing his wife? And what about little Aditya who likes Raj more that his father?

All this and more. Rohan Sippy handles a subject that is more mature than his age. But this young generation of directors has tasted the blood of different cinema. If Farhan Akhtar can sketch a love story between an elderly woman and a young guy in 'Dil Chahta Hai', why can't Rohan do that? One thing common in these boys is that they all have grown up seeing cinema for their daily breakfast. Amitabh Bachchan, Ramesh Sippy and Javed Akthar all made a very good team and history repeats itself in 'Kuch Naa Kaho' when Rohan joins hands with Junior B. Rohan has all that is required from a brilliant director in the making. Though he loses his grip in between and also falls into the trap of Bollywood masala to incorporate more songs and unneeded comedy scenes in the middle of the film, but post interval he manages to bring the film back to its original line. If scenes like encounter with teacher (Tanaz Currim) in boarding school and a song thereafter can be avoided in the film, there are many scenes where Abhishek and Rohan work hand in hand to give some brilliant scenes. The scene where Abhishek confesses his love on the railway platform or another scene where he tries to explain things to little kids have been canned beautifully.

Apart from Abhishek's outstanding performance, 'Kuch Naa Kaho' also sees Aishwarya giving a balanced show. Not only does she flaunt her beauty in many scenes in the film, but she also comes out a winner in the emotional scenes. The climax will be liked by the female audience more for its feministic approach and it is the climax that will earn this film more and more mouth publicity. Neeraj Vora after a long gap has written a good screenplay on the story of Rohan Gera. He is equally supported by dialogues by Naushil Mehta and Nidhi Tuli. Sharmishtha Roy has created vibrant sets. Music tri of Shankar Ehsan and Loy have given a befitting music according to the mood of the film and at least two songs, namely the title song and Achchi Lagti Ho have already become craze among the music lovers. The film also has a very good technical support from all the departments whereas photography by V. Manikandan and choreography by Saroj Khan, Vaibhavi Marchant and Bosco-Caesar needs special mention. The film will not only earn profits at the box office but it will certainly give a new and much needed lease of life to Abhishek Bachchan.

AJAY DEVGAN WORKS HARD TO SAVE THE SHOW

Filmmakers shy away from releasing their movies during Shraddh paksh when Hindus remember their ancestors. So this fortnight is termed as inauspicious. This year is an exception because not one or two but four new movies have been released this Friday (September 12). 'Parwana' was supposed to be released two weeks earlier but as it clashed with another film of Ajay Devgan. Hence Producer-director Deepak Bahry preferred to postpone its release. Since he too believes in this superstition, he had his film exhibited in Nasik two days before going for a full-fledged release. And it is not very surprising of Deepak Bahry that he has not deviated for his belief in masala flicks too.

He has carried on with his formulae of making films the Manmohan Desai way in 'Parwana' too. He has some glitches here, some glamour there; fight sequences to raise the adrenalin here and there and then a long drawn climax. All the producers of Ajay Devgan these days are trying hard to cash on his recently won National Award for Best Actor. Earlier his buddy Prakash Jha tried it. While Prakash Jha managed to gain initial success thanks to main controversies attached to his film, Deepak may not that lucky.

Parwana' is the story of today's Robin Hood. It is story of Parwana (Ajay Devgan) who lives in a poor man's colony and will do anything to help the poor of the basti. He does odd jobs without harming anybody. He also has a golden heart that would fall for a rare beauty easily and win her over too. But that is not all. Enter the terrorists from the valley. Their leader (Sharat Saxena) believes in massacre and mayhem so his name becomes synonymous with terror. He does everything to send terror messages across the police machinery and creates ripples in the media too. He is aided in his ugly mission by none other than the Police Commissioner (Akhilendra Mishra). The story takes a twist when Parwana is touted as terrorist while he is busy playing with the pallu of his ladylove (Amisha Patel).

Now Parwana has to set the things right. Though he has been a petty thief all along, he cannot carry away with the label of a traitor. So he decides to fight the destiny on his own. The climax has a bomb ticking away in the financial capital Mumbai and Parwana does anything to save the innocent people and thus get a chance to prove his goodness. There's a lot of patriotism, sacrifice, high voltage drama, love and edge of the seat action.

'Parwana' can be counted among the films of 80's where these Masala flicks were the fashion of the day. But these days every one is trying to present Ajay Devgan in a different look and path-breaking role. Deepak sticks to his time tested formulae. And Devgan too doesn't let him down. In fact, he is the only saving point of the film. In a film that would have sunk at the box office, Ajay Devgan gives a good performance. He is back with a vengeance and he is not the matured and serious looking guy. He is raw and he is out there to fight the odd in his own style. He teams up with father Veeru Devgan in this film to create some stunning action sequences. And these action sequences will bring Deepak's money back from small exhibition centers because there is hardly any hope of this film working in metros where films like 'Joggers' Park' and 'Kuch Naa Kaho' have become fashion of the day.

'Parwana' has a huge star cast yet not many have managed to help Ajay Devgan in the show. The fault lies with director Deepak Bahry. He had Pooja Batra on his disposal, but he wasted her. Kader Khan does manage to rise above the average, but Akhilendra Mishra does a lot of hamming. Gulshan Grover proves that he is a good actor in any getup, but then Jagdip falls far behind the finishing line. Ketaki Dave is irritating you with her maniac style. Amisha Patel seems to have forgotten acting after she met Vikram Bhatt! She looks wooden, no emotions on her face. Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Sayaji Shinde should have been given better roles. Amisha Patel has nothing to do in this film that is written with just one man, Ajay Devgan, in mind. She drops her Pallu here and there and that is all she has got to do in this film.

The technical team tries to cover fault of acting department. So you see some good sets designed by Bijon Das Gupta and some fresh steps by choreographers -- Rekha and Chinni Prakash. Tanveer Khan's dialogues have some punch at places, but it is Veeru Devgan's stunt scenes that come out clear winner. Had Sanjeev Darshan worked harder, the result would have been more satisfactory for Deepak Bahry who has taken almost four years to complete this film. The film looks stale at places and there are also continuity lapses at places. The film does not have a very bright future though action lovers can enjoy the second half of the film.

Ajay Devgan syndrome haunts desi BPO crowd

MUMBAI: Do you remember the movie Deewangee , where Ajay Devgan essayed the role of a person suffering from multiple personalities? The same syndrome now haunts Indian BPOs.

The multiple identities a section of BPO employees are asked to assume seem to be causing psychological problems for some of them, industry experts say.

Voice based BPO companies expect their employees to acquire not only a foreign accent and change their name, but develop new interests, and hobbies. Employees are expected to make appropriate changes to their personality so they are able to converse with a person sitting in Idaho, Texas or Boston.

Most entry level employees in these companies are young and are just out of college. For an overwhelming majority this is their first job. They are yet to form a working personality which most of us don when we head from home to work.

Dr Liam Brown, a medical doctor in an earlier avatar and now CEO of Integreon a BPO firm, says, "At an age when you are unsure of yourself, if somebody asks you to don another personality, it may have a long term impact on the psychological makeup of people."

Some of the impact of this corporate sponsored multiple personality may now be manifesting itself at the work place. One of the side effects of this is that a small section of employees may be losing sight of what is ethical beahviour.

For instance, stealing corporate databases or information is not seen as a crime by these employees. First it is not something tangible that they are stealing but a list of names and numbers, second they can blame it on their office personality for stealing and thus avoid any responsibility of theft.

Psychiatrists define an identity disorder as a disturbance in identity, in which two or more separate and distinct personality states (identities) influence or direct behavior at different times. This is sometimes called multiple personality disorder.

Multiple personality disorder is a serious psychotic condition, and it would be wrong to assume that working conditions in BPO companies would lead to it. What seems to be worrying some HR managers is that there seems to be lack of any concern in some BPO companies even when individual employees are confronted with it.

Brown, says, "We need to establish a culture which makes people sensitive about these things. Then put some systems which help us track the online activity of our employees."

Companies are becoming sensitive to this issue and some of them realise that existing security frameworks on data security do not really take into account such complex problems.

Most BPO companies deny any attempt to change the personalities of their employees. BPO companies with large call centers like GECIS, Intelenet, and ICICIoneSource all strongly deny that they force their employees to adopt another personality.

According to Aashu Calapa,Vice President-HR at ICICIOnesource, "While I am not a qualified psychologist, I can only say that down the ages each person male or female has had multiple facets. For example a male has been variously a father, son, husband, brother, colleague, boyfriend, boss etc.

A female has similarly been a sister, mother, wife, boss, colleague, girlfriend etc. In each of these roles, people exhibit different facets of themselves. And then there are the actors who day in and day out adorn different personalities for the entire duration of a film, or an author who internalizes his protagonist."

He adds, "In today's world, a person could add an on-line identity to the list or a call centre person could add the agent persona to the list. We have not seen ethical problems arise due to this in any way at work."

GECIS officials say, "As a company, Gecis has always been extremely flexible regarding this. If we have adopted this practice, it has largely been for ease of operations and for protecting our employees. Even in the US, the majority of collectors use an ' alias', so this is not really India or Asia-specific. Further, our employees have always had the choice of using their own name."

The standard response of companies is usually as follows : That it is not written company policy, or we do it only when the customer insist, or only 10% of our employees have dual identities, or other industries like airlines also have dual identities for their employees. While there is nothing wrong with this, the seeming lack of concern worries some industry observers.

Monisha Advani at recruitment firm EmmayHR, says, "BPOs cleverly disguise their motive of 'suggesting' that employees use western pseudonyms by saying it will make customers comfortable with names they can easily pronounce. Most first-timers embrace this willingly and almost find it an easier way to play-act their way through challenging calls."

Psychologically, this tends to be a disassociative factor wherein employees begin to attribute negative experiences to the pseudo-identity. Almost like a 'Bunty-Babli' syndrome. This sometimes becomes a limiting characteristic when trying to implement constructive feedback/development plans with employees displaying such behavior, she says.

MANISHA SHINES IN MARKET

Bollywood has suddenly got a new interest in a profession that is one of the oldest in the human history. Yet it is not much talked about in society openly. There is a mad rush among actresses to portray a prostitute on screen. And it all started after Tabu got many applauses and awards in Madhur Bhandarkar's much-acclaimed movie 'Chandni Bar'. Today Kareena Kapoor is playing 'Chameli', which director Sudhir Mishra will complete after its original director Anant Balani died. There are many other films made on life in brothels. There is also a debate going on presently as to why not give prostitution a legal status. So when Manisha Koirala wanted to turn producer she chose a subject where she could prove her mettle as an actress.

After watching this film, it looks she has the bet. Loosely inspired from a real incident where a minor was rescued from the clutches of a Sheikh before boarding to a Gulf-bound fight. 'Market' has Manisha Koirala at her best role in the last few years. It is not that this subject is totally new in Bollywood. Veterans like Shyam Bengal and Muzaffar Ali too tried to explore the pangs of the profession in films like 'Mandi' and 'Umrao Jaan'. There were other films too like 'Bazaar' and 'Mausam'. However, with the arrival of the new age directors, this subject has become contemporary. While veterans saw at the subject in a traditional way, the new directors are making it closer to the present day's life.

'Market' has Manisha Koirala playing a prostitute (Muskaan). She was born near Hyderabad and her poor parents sold her for want of money to a rich Sheikh. The Sheikh does not believe in the system called marriage. After exploiting 'Muskaan' for a few days, he divorces her. Muskaan's parents file a case against the Sheikh, but the money plays its part and Muskaan is denied justice. The Sheikh is freed. Time passes and Muskaan comes to Mumbai. Here her encounter with a policeman Sawant (Sayaji Shinde) opens her eyes to cruel realities of the life. Through Sawant, Muskaan meets Lisa (Suman Rangnathan) and Isha (Shweta Menon). Lisa and Isha are the professional call girls, who are happy with their life. Muskaan now becomes Mallika. She starts working as a call girl too. One day, she meets a criminal (Aryan Vaid) and the latter falls for her. He wants to take Mallika away and offer her a shelter in his home. But Mallika does not want this. Isha who is having a relation with another criminal (Makrand Deshpande) is killed. This incident shocks Mallika. The story takes a new turn when Mallika reaches Dubai for a show. She confronts her ex-husband here and decides to teach him a lesson. Govind Namdeo is a don too. He operates from Dubai, and takes Mallika to the Gulf.

The film is a winner for at on two points. First, of course, is the strong portrayal of a prostitute's role by Manisha Koirala. She looks so real. Her character of Muskaan is very close to real life. One wonders how she got so many inputs for the role. Manisha has worked really hard. She deserves credit for this. She may not be at par with Shabana Azmi, but is not far behind. She brings humanity to this character. Even when she becomes Mallika, her dedication to the role doesn't lessen a bit, though this part looks a bit artificial. The second impressive point in the film is its direction. New director Jai Prakash has really worked hard to set the film in a realistic ambience. In fact, the film leaves its mark from the very beginning. The first hour of the film is so grasping that you don't feel like visiting the loo. The incidents happen at a fast pace and Jai Prakash has used the local lingo and exact settings. He has worked on the minutest details to create the right atmosphere for the film. He shows his caliber, and is thus going to stay. His homework is perfect and presents his film on a platter that is more real.

'Market' not only shows the pimpy portion of prostitutes, it also goes deep in their personal lives. However, Jai Prakash loses his grip on certain developments and fails to conclude his subject. He chose the underworld and the revenge to complete the story, but it would have hit harder if he had created some unusual climax like that in 'Chandni Bar'. Still, he does make a mark. He has chosen the right cast. Suman Rangnathan looks sensual as usual and her comeback is welcome to her fans since the days of 'Fareb'. Shweta does her job well too. Sayaji Shinde comes out a winner. Jai Prakash also gets good support from his cinematographer Thomas Xavier.His dialogues writers Masood Mirza and Meeraq Miza have lended him a good backing. Though the film lacks good music and Altaf Raja fails to grab the nuances of the film, 'Market' manages to sail across the tough competition.

'RAKHT' BOMBED BUT BIPS MOVES ON

'Rakht' bombed, but Bipasha Basu has moved on. She has just signed Prakash Jha's 'Apaharan' with Nana Patekar. Also on the cards is John Mathew Mathan's next starring Ajay Devgan and Shahid Kapoor and Sunil Darshan's 'Barsaat' with Akshay Kumar. Bips has three more releases lined up this year - 'Chehra', 'No Entry' and 'Jaane Kya Hoga'. 'Madhoshi' with boyfriend John Abraham and Priyanshu Chatterjee has just released but more than films she is always in the news with some or the other rumor. We found out more about these rumors from the actress herself.

There are rumors that John Abraham beats you up when he gets angry. Comment?

I am getting sick and tired of such vicious gossip! As a couple we have always been very honest about our relationship. I am a very strong woman and I have maintained right from the beginning that I will not take the slightest of physical abuse from any man. John is a thorough gentleman and does not beat me up. And I hope speculations like these will end with what I have just said.

John has been linked to Lara Dutta in recent times. Did that make you insecure?

Yes, there are speculations all the time but John and I are very open in our relationship - we talk about these things and sort them out when such rumors take place. I too have been linked up with hundreds of men. If we felt so insecure about each other our relationship would have been long over by now.

Did John give you a treadmill because he thinks you are fat?

What rubbish! John likes me well rounded. In fact he doesn't want me to lose any more weight. He realized how difficult it is for me to work out in the gym as it gets too crowded and I love doing cardio and therefore the thoughtful gift.

When are you planning to get married?

I am not getting married for the next five years. I want to do great cinema before I get married. Once I get married I will not act. In any case, Bengali women are known for getting married late.

Didn't your chemistry with John match more than with your other heroes...?

Yes the chemistry is just right. 'Madhoshi' will be my third film with John and the comfort level is great.

Why have you been accused of being greedy with the prices you demand?

It's stupid to brand people like this! Why me? Everyone is charging what he or she wants. Everyone has a choice and it's their life to ask for what they want.

Stars are like freelancers. This is my job. We don't have fixed jobs so it's up to us to ask for what we want. Sometimes we charge foolishly too. We have to know our market and charge accordingly.

JOHN: I WANT TO BE A VERSATILE CHARACTER

The model-turned-actor John Abraham has traveled a long journey in Bollywood. After getting wide acclaim for his role in 'Jism' he appeared in a gray role for the first time in the film 'Aetbaar'. But he made his entry as villain in 'Dhoom', which suited him, most. In this movie all the main three characters, including John, displayed their performance with bike to thrill the audience. John drove his 1300 cc bike on the crowded roads of Mumbai at a speed of 200 km per hour.

How did 'Dhoom' excite you so much?

Yes, I am excited with 'Dhoom' as my body language, attitude and bike savvy image matched to the character in this movie.

How was your experience in 'Dhoom'?

In this film the bike was my co-star. During the shooting of this film I told some such secrets about the bike to Uday and Abhishek that they have gone mad after bike.

Don't you feel the risk in driving bike at a high speed?

No, I don't. Because of my passion for bikes I have witnessed death from a close distance for several times. After seeing my sports bike once Abhishek had remarked that only a mad could drive it. During the shooting of 'Dhoom' Abhishek and Uday enjoyed riding my bike.

Are Uday and Abhishek your chums?

Uday and me were classmates in the Bombay Scotis School. Abhishek was our senior there. In fact this movie had brought a chance for us to be more friendly.

Which is your latest movie with Bipasha?

I hit the silver screen recently with Bipasha Basu in 'Madhoshi'. When both are found together it seems that we are made for each other.

Are you choosy even in doing roles with Bips?

From the beginning I was getting enormous offers with Bipasha. But I became choosy because it will create interest among the audience towards us.

What's your forthcoming movie?

I am making an entry to the international film world through Deepa Mehata's 'River Moon'.

What about doing crossover films?

I have no interest in crossover films. But if I get a chance for Hollywood film then I would do it. I am always in search of a good character and I am trying to be a versatile actor.

KAREENA LIKES MERRY MAKING

Kareena Kapoor belongs to a successful star family and has become a heartthrob of millions of moviegoers. However, she is yet to get hits at the box office. At the age of nine, I decided to be a heroine. So I tried to imitate Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi, especially their dances.

Yes, if I were not a heroine, I would have been a famous lawyer.

Why did Shahid decline your father's film offer? Did it affect your relationship with Shahid?

Shahid is free to take his own decision. Sahid's denial has not at all affected our friendship.

Would your like to say something about your likings?

My favorite color is red and I have a number of red color tops. Generally, I wear jeans and top at home. But while on dating I don't hesitate to wear Indian clothes.

Do you consider yourself as a perfect actress?

I consider myself as a natural actress. I try to make my performance lively. Only for 'Chameli' I had to do a little hard work, as I had to exhibit how the sex workers behave usually. I don't think myself as a perfect actress though. I have to learn a lot and now I am in a beginning stage.

Do you like discipline?

No, and due to this my mother used to get annoyed with me. But I enjoy doing something even if it crosses the limit. I do not like restrictions. I like to do that what I think. I want to enjoy my life each moment because who knows what might happen tomorrow?

AFTAB: DEATH IS A FACT OF LIFE

From the chubby Farex baby to the hilarious Amar in 'Masti', Aftab Shivdasani has come a long way. Without any filmi-family lineage, Shivdasani has relied on his crooked smile, next door boy look and acting abilities for his rise in Bollywood. And with as many as four releases lined up in the next couple of months, he has a lot to look forward to. But his latest to hit the box office is Anupam Sinha directed 'Shukriya'. We found out more from the actor himself.

Tell us about 'Shukriya', why is it interesting?

It's a film about life and death. The film focuses on a man who knows he's going to die in four days. Death is something we are all afraid of, but it's inevitable - we've tried to show death positively. And capturing the life of that person in four days is quite unique.

Are you afraid of death?

I think we all are. I'd be lying if I said it doesn't unnerve me at all. But I also know that it's a fact of life. If you have been brought in this world then you will also have to leave it one day.

From the comic hero in 'Masti' to a more serious role here, what do you prefer?

They have both been amazing experiences. At least doing such films doesn't typecast me in any particular genre. Both have given me a different high. Comedy is something I enjoy doing, but this film gives me an opportunity to play different shades.

What else are you working on?

I have a couple of releases lined up. But let me talk about films in which I will be seen in a different light. I have a double role in 'Jaane Hoga Kya', which comes out in November, and then I am doing this sci-fi thriller based on human cloning. There is also an Ekta Kapoor film and, for the first time, I am doing a negative role in 'Dost' with Sanjay Dutt.

So do you have a negative side to you?

Everyone has a negative side. I am a person usually ruled by the good in the world. But it's for the people who are on my bad side to find out and the world to guess.

You've mentioned in an interview last year that you still don't have the hit tag attached to you. Do you think that has changed?

Well no, not really. I have been doing a lot of multi-starrers and for the hit tag, you have to have a single-starrer, successful film attached to your name. I don't think I have got there yet - but I'm on my way. I am doing some films in which only I am going to be the hero. And then probably I can try and give a hit.

MANISHA PLANS TAKING DIRECTION WORK SOON

The last we all heard of Manisha Koirala was when she was leaving for New York to study but now she is back from New York with a slimmer shape and an education in filmmaking. Shooting for 'Chaahat - Ek Nasha' at Filmalaya Studios in Andheri, Mumbai, Manya is gyrating to a song in a body hugging, flaming red, pantsuit. But she's willing to chat about her personal and professional life, and surprisingly gives some pretty upfront answers.

What did you get up to in New York?

I have always loved New York, so when I got the opportunity to study there I grabbed it. I did an eight-week intensive direction course at New York University. I have plans of taking up direction at some point, but I am not prepared yet. It was great fun and a good learning experience. It also opened my eyes to international film making techniques.

We heard that Cecil and you have broken up. Your comment?

Cecil and I are very much together. In fact, he was a great source of emotional strength to me while we were in New York.

Are you and Cecil getting married in December?

No, definitely not this year. We will get married at one point. But it's too early for this year. And I will not run away and get married nor will I hide my marriage. I will tell a few people. It will be very romantic.

What about the link-up with Aryan Vaid?

Aryan is a sweet kid and a friend, but nothing more. These rumors happened because at that time Cecil and I were having trouble in our relationship and almost broke up. I was friendly with Aryan. People mistook this for an affair.

What next after 'Chaahat - Ek Nasha'?

Well I have been getting offers but I can only do films worth doing. And if I have to wait, I will. Otherwise I will take up scripting, traveling, meeting people. There is so much more to do in life. I have done all the glamorous, song and dance stuff. I am bored with all that. I want to do a film that gives me the liberty of doing something new. I want to work with great directors.

Your production, 'Raja Dil Ka Ghulam' directed by Makarand Deshpande and starring your brother Siddharth, has gone over-budget and has been stalled. Isn't it?

There's nothing of the sort. The film is on schedule. There might have been slight delays but the film will get completed on time.

Why did you choose an offbeat film director for the film?

I have always liked Makarand's style and technique. I chose him because I wanted Siddharth to start with something challenging. Also the script was fantastic so I had to say yes.

Salman's absence not granted

The Mumbai court has rejected the application of Bollywood actor Salman Khan for absence of leave from court appearance in his alleged involvement in the rash driving case of 2002, killing one person and injuring four at a local bakery. The court has issued bailable warrant against a witness who had earlier admitted that he had warned the actor against rash driving, but failed to appear now. The court has summoned him for 26th May hearing.

Aamir as Dinoo Kaka

Again, famous Bollywood actor Aamir Khan will be seen in a double role of Manno bhabhi and Dinoo Kaka. In both roles, Aamir tries to explain the meaning of thanda (cold). You may recall that Aamir Khan has changed himself several times to sell Coke in the past. Though the actor is seen on the silver screen only once in a year or two, he is frequently found on the small screen publicing a product. This time he looks a different person with gamchha (towel) on his soldier and an east Indian haircut. He becomes too popular in these ads to be removed easily.

Kajol is doubly happy

Kajol is very happy these days. One, because her movie with Shah Rukh Khan titled 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge' has established a record of completing five hundred weeks at a theatre in Mumbai. Second, her sister Tanisha has recently got an offer from Yash Chopra banner. The movie is untitled yet but Chopras have decided to get it directed by Arjun Sablok of the 'Na Tum Jaano Naa Hum'. Kajol is excited indeed as her younger sister Tanisha had been feeling frustrated because of no film offer for quite some coupled with her three consecutive flops. Now, both the sisters have heaved a sigh of relief. Tanisha is looking forward with high hopes from the Chopra camp. Interestingly, Tanisha will play opposite Uday Chopra of the 'Dhoom' fame in the untitled movie.

Abhishek drives Priyanka crazy!

Does he or does he not? Abhishek Bachchan called her his heartthrob on national television and now an over-the-moon Priyanka Chopra is hoping that the Small B meant what he said.

The former Miss World who replaced Aishwarya Rai opposite Abhishek in Rohan Sippi's forthcoming film Bluff Master, admits she's still in a state of suspended disbelief.

"I went crazy when I heard that Abhishek had gone on air to say he would die for me. Although I missed the programme, I came to know because the whole industry was talking about us. I know he must have made those comments for fun but my intial reaction was - Oh God! What if it's really true? I wish he was sincere about all those things he said," she quips.

Her heart-and-seek with Abhishek apart, Priyanka insists she had no intention of taking the role away from Ash. According to her: "I never try to snatch roles from anyone. Circumstances were such that I had to say yes to Bluff Master. However I spoke to Ash about it and clarified matters. I respect her a lot and don't want any kind of confusion between us."

Undeterred by the dismal box office performance of films like Yakeen, Waqt and Karam, Priyanka says she's now looking forward to her role in the remake of the 1978 blockbuster Don.

"I think the shooting will start sometime in February next year. It's supposed to be made along the same lines as the original. My role in the film will most certainly be influenced by character that Zeenatji (Zeenat Aman) portrayed," she says.

At least in this case Priyanka thinks imitation would be a form of flattery.

"I feel I am lucky to have been cast in the same role that Zeenatji did. It would be a real honour to enact or seem to be influenced by someone who was regarded as the undisputed glam gal of her era. I have been watching Don over and over again and trying to understand the nuances of her performance. If my director and others expect me to look and act like Zeenatji, then I will do my best not to disappoint them," she says.

Priyanka to play J.P's Umrao Jaan

Today's number one runner up Priyanka Chopra is very excited with her latest assignment of playing Umrao Jaan in J.P Dutta's remake of 'Umrao Jaan'. We may recall that during the 80s yesteryears' super hit actress Rekha had played the character of Umrao Jaan. Priyanka Chopra is proud of getting the role of Umrao Jaan in J. P. Dutta's remake. However, she confessed that she could only try to do this challenging role as it was earlier played by as talented an artist as Rekha. When asked to identify the hero of the movie, she failed to answer it. She also didn't know about its shooting schedule.

Karisma-Sunjay case hearing adjourned

The Delhi high court gave a week's time to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor on Friday to file her reply to the petition by her estranged husband Sunjay Kapur seeking to restrain her from going abroad with their four-month-old daughter Samaira.

The court sought the reply from the actress by August 19 on the allegation by her husband that the passport of their minor child was made by flouting all laws and without his consent and adjourned the hearing of the petition filed by Sunjay till August 26.

Sunjay was present in the court while Karisma was represented by her advocate Raian Karanjawala. Noted Supreme Court advocate Ashok Desai appeared for Sunjay Kapur.

The court appealed to both the parties to try reconciling with each other within the interim period. It, however, made it clear that the interim stay on Karisma would continue and she would not be able to take her 4-month-old baby girl Samaira out of India till the matter was settled.

The court also disallowed a petition filed by a non-governmental organisation, who had claimed that they can bring about reconciliation between Karisma and Sunjay.

The government of India (passport office) was granted more time so that it could file a comprehensive reply before next friday. On behalf of the passport office, it was clarified that either of the two parents can apply for the child's passport without the express consent of the other parent.

Desai argued that if this was true, then the government of India had been misleading the people of the country as no such detail had been printed on the passport form.

"My client has no problem in getting the passport issued, but it was the manner in which it was done behind his back by the mother of his child, and he had no knowledge about it," Desai said.

The court then asked both the parties to appear on August 26, when the matter would be heard next.

Karisma's marriage may break

The marriage of actress Karisma Kapoor with a Delhi's business tycoon Sanjay Kapur is on the breaking point, according to sources close to her family. Since giving birth to a female child in a Mumbai hospital, Karisma has been mostly living with her parents in Mumbai. Her husband Sanjay Kapoor has, however, been visiting her in her parents' city only. These sources add that the couple's relationship has reached a point of no return. According to reports, Karisma is upset with her husband's alleged affairs with other women, especially with his ex-wife Nandita Mehta. Despite several warnings to her husband, Karisma has not found any change in his attitude. In fact, the whole film industry was amazed when Karisma readied to an arranged marriage with her family's friend Sanjay Kapoor soon after her severing relations with Abhishek Bachchan even after betrothal ceremony. However, film circles don't wonder if the marriage of Karisma and Sanjay breaks at a time when the industry has a lot of such cases.

Amisha: I take my own decisions

Amisha Patel says that she takes all her decisions herself. She need not depend on any person howsoever close to her. She said this while replying to the media about her legal dispute with her parents. She clarified that she hasn't done it at the instance of her close friend Vikram Bhatt. Since her parents had misused her finances and were not ready to return her money she had resorted to a legal fight with them." I want to live my own life. My parents are financially sound." When asked about her very little presence in the industry these days she said she is determined to take right decisions. " I want to better my life. However, I shall not disclose more than this. Whatever I do in future it will be loud and clear," she claimed.
