Lee Su Geun was not nominated for the KBS Entertainment Awards Grand Prize, while Lee Seung Gi was. This fact is bringing up many questions. Why did Lee Su Geun, who stole the spotlight on KBS this year, not make the list?
KBS announced its five nominees for the 2011 KBS Entertainment Awards Grand Prize on December 21.
The nominees were Kim Byung Man of Gag Concert and Birth of a Family, Shin Dong Yeop of Hello and Immortal Song 2, Yoo Jae Suk of Happy Together Season 3, Lee Kyung Kyu of Qualifications of Men and Lee Seung Gi of 1 Night 2 Days.
All of the nominees are, of course, highly qualified for the highest honor, as they have all made it big in the eyes of the public this year, but there’s just one catch. It′s curious how Lee Seung Gi earned a nomination when Lee Su Geun, the oldest member on 1 Night 2 Days, didn’t.
Lee Su Geun didn’t fall behind Lee Seung Gi this year. He led 1 Night 2 Days to success even without Kang Ho Dong, and he appeared in Gag Concert, Winning Streak, Invincible Youth 2 and Order Received. On the other hand, Lee Seung Gi was fairly limited to 1 Night 2 Days in KBS.
Many are assuming perhaps Lee Su Geun was pushed back because he’s been appearing on general service and cable channel programs, but seeing how Kim Byung Man, who walked the same road, did receive a nomination, this theory doesn’t seem likely.
An official of KBS stated, “Because they continued 1 Night 2 Days successfully even without Kang Ho Dong, there is a great possibility that one of the show’s members will receive the KBS Entertainment Grand Prize.” If this is true, and one of the 1 Night 2 Days members will be receiving the award, KBS has no choice but to approach the matter strategically.
Recently, as cable and general service channels are competing to cast top celebrities, all channels are having a hard time finding celebrities to participate in their shows. And out of them all, Lee Seung Gi is the most coveted star.
Usually, only one star from each program can be nominated for the Grand Prize. KBS had no choice but to choose between Lee Seung Gi or Lee Su Geun.
The Grand Prize is an honor for the awardee, but for the channel, it is a key that can be used as leverage to form a tighter bond and put him in new shows. Strategically, it is more profitable to choose Lee Seung Gi rather than Lee Su Geun, who is already tied to KBS as an official KBS comedian.
An official stated, “It’s naïve to believe that only the feats performed that year will get a celebrity the Grand Prize. Of course that’s what’s at the core, but strategic choices also affect the process greatly. This is how you can evaluate why Lee Seung Gi, not Lee Su Geun, made it [as a nominee].”

MBC removes Kang Ho Dong from ‘Broadcast Entertainment Awards’ nominees’ list
MC Kang Ho Dong‘s name has been dropped from the entertainment awards nominations.
According to an MBC insider on the 22nd, Kang Ho Dong has been removed from their ‘Broadcast Entertainment Awards’ nominees’ list. The MC has not made any official appearances after announcing his temporary leave from the industry, and MBC feared listing his name would stir unnecessary controversy.
Ahead of this, his name was also removed from the KBS entertainment awards nominations. Kang Ho Dong has led some of the most popular programs on all three major broadcasting networks and was without a doubt predicted to receive Daesangs at the year-end awards ceremony, however, this became difficult after he made his exit from the entertainment industry. There has yet to be an official statement from SBS, but they will most likely report that they will be removing him from their list as well.
The MC was involved in a tax evasion controversy this past September and decided to temporarily retire from the industry to reflect on his actions. After his leave, his shows ‘Knee-Drop Guru‘, ‘Strong Heart‘, and ‘1N2D‘ struggled while getting adjusted to his absence.
