Diaby predicts psychological Cup blow to Utd
Abou Diaby has urged Arsenal to land a psychological blow in the Premier League title race by prevailing in the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The Gunners face arch-rivals Manchester United in the fifth round, four days before they host AC Milan in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Diaby, who will miss the game with a calf injury, insists his team-mates must put all thought of Europe out of their minds as they seek to damage United's confidence in the title race.
'I expect us to go to Old Trafford, play our football and win,' Diaby told Arsenal TV.
'The fact there's a Champions League match against AC Milan will not take an edge off the game. We want to play in every competition.
'Whether it's Champions League, FA Cup or Premier League, we want to win everything because Arsenal is a big club. :pompom:
'Manchester United are a very good team with some massive players.
'They are doing very well this year and it will be tight between us, them and Chelsea for the title right until the end of the season.
'Maybe if we beat United we'll get an advantage over them for the title. We will give our best against them and win.'
Cesc Fabregas looks set to be involved against United despite suffering from a throat infection.
Fabregas revealed yesterday that Arsenal have opened negotiations over a new contract, even though his existing deal does not expire until 2014.
And the Spain midfielder insists he is committed to winning silverware at the Emirates despite renewed interest from hometown club Barcelona.
'I have contract in force until 2014,' said Fabregas in an interview on radio station Cadena Ser.
'I have six years remaining and I am talking with my club, who are interested in renegotiating it.
'I want to succeed at Arsenal and that the club wants me is fundamental for me.
'I am proud (to be linked to Barcelona), I am from Barcelona and I have played there.
'But now I only think of winning as many titles as possible here (at Arsenal).'

Wenger Has No Intention Of Quitting Arsenal
Arsene Wenger is still enjoying management and believes he has plenty of great times still ahead of him.
At only 59 years old, French manager Arsene Wenger says he has not even contemplated quitting football.
Despite being at Arsenal for 12 years and having achieved so much, Wenger believes there is still plenty more for him to do - starting this weekend as the Gunners travel to Manchester United in the FA Cup.
The Emirates coach has won all the league and FA Cup several times over since moving to England from Japan, but he insists he hasn't set himself a target upon which he would call it a day.
There's No Limit
"I don't set myself limits," he told the Daily Mail. "One morning, maybe, I will get up and think 'I don't want to do this today' but it hasn't happened yet. My life has been football, football, football. I couldn't change.
"I've had opportunities in the past to consider other things, to go into television, for example, but each time I realised that I couldn't live without football.
"My spirit and enthusiasm is exactly as it was 20 years ago," he continued. "It might be the same 20 years from now. What I do accept is that you need fitness and energy to do the job I do. That's not guaranteed for anyone. I also realise you need a kind of animal force. To motivate people you need the hunter's animal instinct."
Instinctive Behaviour
"You must want to win," Wenger explained. "When you're a young manager your animal instinct is strong but your knowledge is small.
"With age the balance changes - the animal instinct shrinks and the wisdom becomes dominant. Then you get to the stage when you have only wisdom. That's when you have to say goodbye. Then, of course, you might lose wisdom also. When that happens you have a problem! |

Wenger Down To 'Bare Bones' For Man Utd Clash
Arsene Wenger has just 14 fit players for the FA Cup fifth round clash against Manchester United, and is facing a massive problem trying to put together a competitive eleven.
Nine Definitely Out
It had emerged last evening that around three players were out of the Old Trafford game, but a number of other doubtful players have also been ruled out since.
Those who are definitely out are Tomas Rosicky, Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott, Johan Djourou, Alexandre Song, Manuel Almunia, Abou Diaby, Denilson and Bacary Sagna.
That has left the Arsenal manager with only fourteen outfield players, of which Emmanuel Adebayor, Gael Clichy and Mathieu Flaminu are also doubtful.
"We are really touched severely by injuries," said Wenger. "It is a period when you don't want to lose players because these are decisive months."
"If you lose players now they could be out for the rest of the season. "We are down to the bare bones because we have just 14 players."
Late Decision
Wenger will be wary of taking any risks with the Champions League clash against Milan in mind, which means he might be left with a make-shift squad to take on a full strength Manchester United side - boosted by the return of Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Louis Saha.
"Everybody travels and I will make a late decision on Saturday morning to see who I give a breather to," he added.
"I have to decide who is in the most danger. I will make a check with the medical people and then make a decision."
Play To Win
However, he rubbished any talk of being conservative, insisting Arsenal would play with their best possible eleven, and play to win.
"It is a priority because it is the next game," he quipped. "We are on a good run and we want to keep that going. It is always difficult to measure the influence of a lost game compared with the benefit of resting players.
"We have a tricky week because have Milan on Wednesday and Birmingham on Saturday but we play Manchester United and we want to win. We will put out the strongest team possible."
No Mind Games Please
However, he was not too keen on the psychological impact of the game on the title race, insisting he would have preferred a smaller team.
"I'm wasn't jumping through the roof when I heard we were playing Manchester United away from home. I wanted a small team at home," he admitted.
"But that is the charm of the cup. Sometimes it is easier to play away against a big team because they have to come at you so you get some space. What you don't want at the moment is a draw because we have too many fixtures and we have a small squad." |
