Engine mapping clampdown set for Valencia
A tightening up of engine mapping regulations will kick into affect from this weekend’s European Grand Prix in Valencia. The change will prevent teams from making full use of their exhaust-blown diffusers when under off-throttle conditions.
Earlier this week, teams were notified of the much-anticipated change by FIA delegate and Race Director Charlie Whiting. Although the blown diffuser concept – pointing exhaust exits backwards in order to generate extra downforce with hot flowing gases – was introduced by Red Bull in 2010, it is only this season when more teams have tuned their cars to make use of the device when off the throttle, which governing body the FIA classes as a non-aerodynamic aid.
Further changes will be reinforced from the following British Grand Prix, with Red Bull – as inventors of the concept - tipped to be one of the worst hit teams. It is also widely known that both Renault and Mercedes are making much use of the devices this year.
“The FIA's note will cause all teams (whether or not they use a blown floor) to change their operation,” Renault Technical Director James Allison explains. “The headline changes for the Silverstone Grand Prix are as follows: when the driver lifts his foot fully off the throttle pedal, then the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) maps must be set up so that the engine closes the throttle.
“Previously, it was possible to configure the engine maps to leave the throttle open and reduce the engine power by other means. Finally, with immediate effect, it will no longer be possible to reprogram the ECU configuration between qualifying and the race in the expectation that this will discourage extreme ECU setups for qualifying.” |

French government plans Paul Ricard race return
French Prime Minister François Fillon is leading a unit dedicated to the return of the French Grand Prix, which is yet to be seen on the calendar since 2008. With Magny-Cours having hosted the country’s last 18 races, Paul Ricard was last home to the event in 1990, with local favourite Alain Prost enjoying victory for Ferrari.
“It's true that I have put a team together,” Fillon explained to the Var-Matin newspaper. “It is driven in particular by one of my former colleagues, Gilles Dufeigneux, and we are working with the French motorsport federation, the FIA, Eric Boullier (Renault Team Principal) and directors of Le Castellet (Paul Ricard).
Since Felipe Massa won the last French Grand Prix, a number of plans for race comebacks – including those on the streets of Paris and in the Disneyland Paris resort – have fallen through. Paul Ricard, now one of the world’s most technically advanced testing venues for Formula 1, first joined the schedule as Jackie Stewart won for Tyrrell 40 years ago.
It is hoped by the government that France - with Paul Ricard being the most likely venue - could return to the F1 calendar by as early as 2013. |

2014 engine regulations changed
The F1 Commission has agreed to delay the introduction of new engines until 2014 and has proposed to change the four-cylinder units to a 1.6 litre V6 turbo.
Having previously agreed on four-cylinder turbos, many of the teams had expressed opposition to the original 2013 date to switch from the current 2.4 litre V8 engines. FIA president Jean Todt was a keen advocate of the 'greener' engines but had previously admitted that both Ferrari and Mercedes had voiced their concerns to him, while Cosworth recently asked for clarity.
After the commission met today, it has emerged that the V6 has been agreed upon as a compromise, with KERS hybrid technology remaining in place and a further year's grace being given to develop the new units. The revised regulations will need to be ratified by the World Motor Sports Council following the European Grand Prix on Monday.
Of the engine manufacturers only Renault had been fully supportive of the four-cylinder proposal, initially issuing Todt with a quit threat if the new regulations were not introduced, although it did later admit it just wanted a swift resolution to the issue. |
