As The Hospital heats up, discussion topic starts. Because book author Hou Wen Yong was once an anesthesiologist at the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH), discussions accused the plot and characters of the drama series and the book is referring to NTUH. A former NTUH senior doctor also said that many of the events and cases depicted in the series are almost the same that happened at NTUH. The Hospital book unfolded the power struggle in a hospital. Just like ordinary people, doctors in white suits also fights for fame and fortune, self-greed and political scheming.
But because Hou Wen Yong was once a NTUH resident official, others then thought that he wrote the book in reference to NTUH. The man who loved to scold people Dr. Tang, was actually a senior doctor at NTUH, who was later appointed as President of another hospital. At the time of his writing, NTUH had just appointed its medical department head as its new Hospital President, so it led medical groups to talk about its contrasts. Others believed that the presidential daughter Quin Jin in the drama was referring to a former presidential son who was admitted in NTUH.
A former resident doctor at NTUH said that the story followed the events during the term of Hou Wen Yong when he was a still a hospital doctor there. A single look at the at the events ?eeds no guessing who it is? He said that because the characters come and go, the plot is almost too real, but Hou Wen Yong smoothly changed the characters in a different role, and also other departments.
In the drama the Surgical Department head was so disappointed with his chosen doctor that he threw his shoes off when the doctor was in the OR. This former NTUH doctor said that throwing the shoe is just like ?hrowing the scalpel? in NTUH. Another scene is when a wife knelt down to the new Surgical Department head so she could be released. According to this doctor, this plot is absolutely not fabricated. Furthermore, the story pictured doctors receiving money wrapped in bags as an ugly practice, a real case when a patient sued in May 1983 that NTUH doctors allegedly receive bribes and young doctors were forced to be cleared and self-regulated. At that time a Neurosurgeon was also accused by a patient of receiving money, with concrete evidences.
This doctor also said that after Hou Wen Yong released the book, many hospital insiders were irked and accused him of ?hy did you write about me?? This doctor lamented that some of them are still in high position up to now, and the actual consequences are really great. This original novel is just like the Japanese serial that are rather disappointing to the viewers. Behind the halo of compassion, many doctors are also tempted to sink into power struggle to snatch the swirl of fame and fortune.
