Primera Liga Weekend Preview: Second Versus Third At Camp Nou

Real Madrid visit Pampalona for a big battle with Osasuna, Valencia struggle with internal problems ahead of their clash with Athletic Bilbao, while it's second versus third at the Nou Camp as Barcelona host Zaragoza.

The weekend's action, though, kicks off with a mouth-watering clash at the Vicente Calderon, where Atletico Madrid take on Villarreal on Saturday.
The Yellow Submarines are slowly but surely running themselves into form, and jumped above Atleti into eighth last weekend.

The likes of Nihat and Riquelme are beginning to run into form, while Atleti have been hit with yet another injury, this time to their defensive rock Pablo.

Coach Javier Aguirre's frustration is understandable, particularly given the fact that his team have picked up a paltry one point from the last three games. A result against Villarreal is a must if they want to arrest this slide.

Valencia host Athletic Bilbao at the Mestalla in the other game on the night. On the face of it, it looks like a no-brainer, but put together Valencia's internal problems, injury problems, and that they have only picked up four points from the last available nine, and we have a match on our hands.

Marco Reguiero was the latest to break down - with a shoulder injury in Wednesday's Copa del Rey clash. Both left backs ? Del Horno and Moretti ? are out for a significant while, and Flores's requests for a replacement have been turned down, leading to some friction between coaching staff and the administrative ones.

If that wasn't enough, David Villa was sent packing for throwing a few tantrums during training, and it is unclear how that will affect Saturday's starting eleven.

Sunday's feature games involve a huge test for the resurgent Real Madrid. Last week's 3-2 loss to Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu returned a lot of doubts back to the fore, and with a trip to Osasuna this week, there is unlikely to be an easy way out.

The second half display in Thursday's 5-1 Copa del Rey win over Ecija will have given Los Meregues back their positive energy, but Capello will know better than anyone that a similarly poor first half against a first division team can prove very costly.

The Camp Nou sees a battle of second versus third as Barcelona welcome Real Zaragoza. The Catalans should be favourites at home, particularly after a week which allowed their first team regulars some rest, but Zaragoza have produced some wonderful attacking football of late.

The two teams lead La Liga's goal-scoring charts, with 20 each in 9 games, promising some great football no matter what the result. Aimar returns for Zaragoza, and Gudjohnsen for Barcelona, setting the game up perfectly.

Leaders Sevilla will look to make the most of that battle and pull away with a win they should be favourites to pick up against Racing Santander, who have produced little so far to suggest that they can come even close to the top half of the table.

The big news is the injury to Jesus Navas, but it might take more testing opponents than Racing to make Sevilla miss him. The good news is Javier Chevanton's return from injury, though the Uruguayan is not ready for a start yet.

Celta Vigo will be looking to make the most of last week's win over Real Madrid as they host Recreativo Huelva. Another top six finish is their target for the season, but with the likes of Deportivo and Zaragoza moving onwards and upwards, it will take a lot more than last season.

Deportivo have the makings of an up and coming squad, and visit Catalan minnows Nastic in search of points on the road. The Galicians have picked up 13 at home, but a paltry 2 away, and need to start turning that around before the top half starts to really sorts itself out.

Schuster's Getafe are currently occupying the sixth place that so many clubs will be after, and are another team to be wary of this season. They should make minimum fuss against a Mallorca side that will be happy to scrape and avoid relegation once again this season.

Real Betis host Levante with reports suggesting Javier Irureta has been given a two match lifeline to turn things around. He is in all sorts of trouble, with his team on four points after nine games. Levante, meanwhile, have started well for a recently promoted team, and with survival in top flight pretty much their only agenda, will be targeting as many early points as possible so as to survive wobbles later in the season.

The final game sees Miguel Angel Lotina prepare embattled Real Sociedad for a visit from Espanyol, the team he helped to the Copa del Rey last season. The Basques are sitting rock bottom, have already lost one coach, and are early favourites for relegation. However, they will take heart from the fact that the Catalans have been no great shakes either. Both sides went out of the Copa del Rey this week, and could well be battling it out for top flight football come the end of the season.

La Liga Saturday Wrap: Athletic Hold Valencia, Atleti Win

Fernando Llorente netted a late equaliser as Athletic Bilbao snatched a point in a 1-1 draw against Valencia in Mestalla on Saturday evening.

Valencia had enjoyed the better chances in a tough encounter as Athletic looked lacklustre up front with only the immobile Ismael Urzaiz to aim for.

David Villa was twice caught offside and saw his goals ruled out, but a minute before the break the home team took the lead.

Miguel pressed forward down the right and his low cross clipped a defender before Fernando Morientes connected with the ball to steer it into the far corner of I?ki Lafuente's goal.

The second half continued in the same vein until the introduction of both Llorente and, equally importantly, Joseba Etxeberria.

With more width and movement, Athletic finally offered something more going forward and it was the two substitutes that combined on the stroke of 90 minutes to draw their team level.

Etxeberria turned away from David Navarro before clipping the ball across the face of goal and Llorente held off his marker to nod home from close range.

The only highlight for los Ch? after the game was the fact that Rub? Baraja returned to action after recovering from a long-term thigh injury.

Atl?ico de Madrid returned to winning ways as they came from behind to defeat ten-man Villarreal 3-1 in the Vicente Calder?.

Fabricio Fuentes headed the visitors into a 14th minute lead when he met a looping free-kick to beat Leo Franco from 14 yards out.

Despite the setback, Javier Aguirre's team lifted themselves and after a spell of pressure drew level in the same manner as their guests when Z? Castro met Mariano Pern?'s free-kick to angle the ball into the far corner of the net eight minutes before the break.

Soon after the restart the home team took the lead when Fernando Torres jinked his way into the box only to be kicked down by Pascal Cygan.

The striker, that was omitted from the current Spain squad by Luis Aragon?, picked himself up to roll in Atleti's second from the spot.

Sergio Agu?o made the points safge when he ran on to a through-pass before clipping the ball over the approaching keeper.

Any thoughts Villarreal had of taking something from the match all but vanished when Jos? Mari was sent off for a strong tackle in the 73rd minute, only ten minute after coming on as a substitute.

La Liga: Best Eleven Of The Week (Round 10)

The big names in the Spanish first division stole the headlines this week and rightly earned their place in Goal.com's team of the week, but there were several players that also put in strong displays for different reasons.

Goalkeeper

Roberto Abbondanzieri (Getafe): The Argentinian international was in great form as he repelled everything that Mallorca could throw at him as Bernd Schuster's side chalked up another victory and maintained their push for a European place. With his side only scoring one, it was imperative that he kept a clean sheet and he did just that.

Defenders

David Garc韆 (Gimn鄐tic): The former Barça B centre-half proved that if N鄐tic are going to stay in the top flight for longer than one season then they have the defensive security to make it happen. His strength in the air against a strong Depor side was one of the keys to the Tarragona-based outfit earning a much-needed point. Now they justhave to find goals at the other end.

Javi Navarro (Sevilla): After being called back into the Spain set-up last week, Navarro celebrated with a trademark display as he nullified the threat of Racing's giant striker Nikola Zigic in the goalless draw in El Sardinero. The 32-year-old may have his critics, but his power, cunning and reading of the game at the weekend were vital for his side.

Albert Lopo (Deportivo): There were two goalless draws at the weekend and it is no coincidence that all our defenders come from those games. Depor may have netted only a point from a game where they would have expected to take all three, but the fact that the earned anything could be attributed to their back-line which was well-marshalled by the former Espanyol centre-back.

Midfielders

Ivan De la Peña (Espanyol): When 'Little Buddha' plays well, los Periquitos usually play well and that was exactly what happened at Real Sociedad on Sunday. The former Barça and Lazio midfielder pulled all the strings as Espanyol almost pulled off a vital away victory. De la Peña set up Luis Garc韆 for his team's goal and provided the forwards with ammunition throughout.

Capi (Real Betis): The 29-year-old may have only played the final half-an-hour or so, but his entrance lifted the whole team and in the closing moments Cani became the local hero. When some inspiration was needed the Betis midfielder charged through the visitors defence before clipping the ball into the far corner of the net in the 91st minute of the game.

Deco (FC Barcelona): Frank Rijkaard has often said that if Deco is on form then Barça step up another level and that was true against Real Zaragoza. While Ronaldinho grabbed all the headlines, Deco's work-rate was incredible and his passing and controlling ensured that every time the Blaugrana went forward they found him ready to pick up the pace and supply his team-mates.

David Silva (Valencia): Luis Aragon閟 has recognised the Las Palmas-born player's talents and called him into the Spanish squad for the match against Romania, but for Valencia fans his powerful display against Athletic on Saturday it was business as usual. In a team bereft of its' star names, Silva has stepped up and his passing, movement and pace caused the Basque Country side problems all game.

Ronaldinho (FC Barcelona): After enduring several weeks of criticism over his form this season, the Brazilian bounced back in the only way that he knows how. After netting a stunning free-kick to put Barça ahead, Ronaldinho's celebrations spelt out just how frustrated he has become with the constant swiping from the media and so-called pundtis.

Forwards

Ruud Van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid): The Dutchman breezed his way into the best eleven as he scored four away goals for Madrid for the first time since Alfredo Di Stefano did so back in 1957. His quartet showed the way to the club's other wayward forwards and proved that he has had no problems adapting to life in Spain.

Luis Garc韆 (Espanyol): The striker has been at centre of controversy this season when he complained about being unfit, but he has knuckled down and is proving how important he is to the Barcelona-based side. His equaliser at the weekend was clinical and he was unfortunate to add at least one more to his tally and win the game for the visitors at Anoeta.

On the bench

Several goalkeepers earned their crust in la Primera this weekend. Real Sociedad's Claudio Bravo was outstanding as he repelled Espanyol with a string of fine saves, while Pedro Contreras had a very busy evening for Real Betis as they recorded only their second win of the season.

Ezequiel Garay was in fine form for Racing Santander as they earned a creditable point from a goalless draw at home to Sevilla, but it is in midfield where there was an abundance of strong performances in week ten of the Spanish season.

Apart from the five that made the starting team, Getafe's Nacho was unfortunate not to make the cut as he, once again, led by example as the Madrid-based club moved into fifth place and remain in a position to threaten the Champions League places. Pablo Aimar was a constant menace to Barcelona before he was taken off as Zaragoza were forced to sacrifice their attacking stance after being reduced to ten men.

Emilio Viqueira may not be a name that many will have hear of, but if the Recreativo playmaker continues to put in performances like the one that helped his side win at Celta then he will become a familiar face.

Also worthy of a mention are Real Sociedad's Xabi Prieto, who was instrumental in ensuring that his team did not lose against Espanyol, while Javier Pinillo continuously troubled the Depor back line and kept N鄐tic on the front foot and Guti stood out for Madrid in their victory at Osasuna.

Up front, Pedro Munitis is in a rich vein of form and he produced his full range of skills against Sevilla although, ultimately, was unable to bring about a breakthrough and Ikechuckwu Uche's display after coming on as a substitute at half-time for Recre should surely earn him a starting place next weekend.
