Heavy snow blankets parts of Chubu, Kansai
Heavy snow fell on central and western Japan early Saturday as the Meteorological Agency warned of more to come through Sunday.
By midday, as cold air blanketed a large chunk of Honshu, more than 80 cm of snow had blanketed Kuzuryu, Fukui Prefecture, and Wayata, Hiroshima Prefecture, the Meteorological Agency said.
In Shikoku, two men were found in critical condition the same morning in Yoshinogawa, Tokushima Prefecture, after they abandoned their vehicle in deep snow, according to local police.
Nearly 70 cm of snow was recorded in the town of Shirakawa in Gifu. In another part of the mountainous prefecture, deep snow caused vehicles to become stranded on an expressway, and the road had to be closed for several hours.
Up to 80 cm of snow is expected to fall through Sunday morning over a wide area of Honshu facing the Sea of Japan, the agency warned.
2 dead in Tokushima as heavy snow hits central, western Japan
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Two people were confirmed dead Saturday as heavy snow fell in parts of central and western Japan, with the weather agency warning of more snowfall in wide areas of the country through Sunday.
On the western main island of Shikoku, two men were confirmed dead after being found collapsed on snow-covered ground Saturday morning near the peak of Mt. Kotsu in Tokushima Prefecture. They had abandoned their vehicle after it became trapped in snow, according to local police.
As of 10 p.m. Saturday, snowfall exceeded 114 centimeters in Sukayu in Aomori Prefecture, 102 cm in Kuzuryu in Fukui Prefecture and 99 cm in Shirakawa in Gifu Prefecture, as cold air blanketed a large part of Japan's main island of Honshu, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
In Tokushima, about 360 people were cut off as roads were blocked by fallen trees and rocks due to heavy snow. The Ground Self-Defense Force was later mobilized to remove the snow.
In Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan, a vehicle slid into a river and the driver was found unconscious. The car is believed to have skidded due to snow.
In central Japan, snow stranded about 10 vehicles on an expressway in Gifu Prefecture, causing the road to be closed for three hours.
At least 44 domestic flights were cancelled due to snow, affecting around 2,600 people.
Snowfall of up to 60 cm is expected through Sunday evening in a wide area of Honshu facing the Sea of Japan, the weather agency said.
Six die after heavy snow hits nation
A total of six people have been confirmed dead after snow blanketed wide areas of Japan over the weekend, disrupting traffic and leaving about 1,200 people cut off, local authorities said Sunday.
In the city of Takaoka in Toyama Prefecture, a light truck slid into a river and a couple, both aged 78, was found dead nearby after they managed to escape, police said. They were found buried under deep snow.
In the city of Himi, also in Toyama Prefecture, a 62-year-old man was found dead in a gutter on Sunday, and in the town of Eiheiji, Fukui Prefecture, a man in his 80s died after being buried under snow.
On Saturday, two men were confirmed dead in Shikoku after they were found in the morning near the peak of Mount Kotsu in Tokushima Prefecture. They had abandoned their vehicle the day before after it became stuck in snow, local police said.
A helicopter spotted them on a trail on the 1,133-meter mountain at around 8 a.m. They later were pronounced dead at a hospital.
The two were identified as Shigehiro Takano, 43, chief priest of a temple near the mountaintop, and Masao Morimoto, 83, a temple employee, the Tokushima Prefectural Police said .
At around 9:30 a.m. Friday, the two left Takano’s home at the foot of the mountain to drive to the temple.
They called their families at 1 p.m., saying they had driven off the road. Two hours later, they said they would try to walk to the temple, but there was no contact with them after that.
As of 6 p.m. Sunday, 116 cm of snow had fallen in the Sukayu area of Aomori Prefecture, 97 cm in the village of Okura in Yamagata Prefecture and 90 cm in the village of Shirakawa in Gifu Prefecture, as cold air covered eastern and northern areas of the country, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
In mountainous areas of Tokushima Prefecture, about 1,200 people remained cut off as roads were blocked by fallen trees and rocks due to heavy snow. The Ground Self-Defense Force, which started to remove the snow and trees on Sunday, will continue to do so Monday.
About 60 domestic flights were also canceled due to adverse weather conditions. |

Klu dari Osaka nak pegi Shirakawago, ambik JR ke Kanazawa. Dari Kanazawa boleh ambik bas nohi ke Shirakawago. 1850yen, 75 minutes. Round trip 3290yen (sah utk 10 hari), klu tak nak pegi Takayama. Then dari Kanazawa leh terus naik shinkansen pegi Tokyo. On the way klu nak singgah Karuizawa shopping outlet pun boleh, dia kat luar stesen Karuizawa jer. Stesen Karuizawa pun laluan shinkansen.
Klu nak tido Shirakawago pun ok gak, ambik pengalaman sekali seumur hidup. Tp klu taknak tido & taknak lawat Takayama, leh tido kat Kanazawa, jimat sikit.
Gmbr2 Shirakawago masa late march leh tgk sini: http://www.tripadvisor.com.my/Sh ... te_March-Chubu.html
Nih peta sebelum shinkansen bersambung dgn Kurobe & Toyama.
