MARTINS GOAL DECIDES CUP CLASH
Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:10:00

BERGAMO - Inter beat Atalanta 1-0 in a dull Coppa Italia quarter-final first-leg encounter at a freezing Atleti Azzurri d'Italia Stadium thanks to Obafemi Martins' 72nd-minute goal.

On for Recoba in the second half, the Nigerian immediately added verve to the Nerazzurri's game and left his mark after eleven minutes. Receiving a forward pass from Veron, Martins elegantly turned Sala on the edge of the Atalanta box then lifted the ball over Calderoni to notch his fourth domestic cup goal in two games.

Roberto Mancini brought on Kily Gonz醠ez for Julio Cruz in the final seconds to hand the Argentine winger his return to competitive action after months out through injury.

Inter warm up for the return leg at the Giuseppe Meazza on 16 February with a midweek Serie A match at home to Atalanta next Wednesday.

VIERI DOUBLE SINKS PALERMO
Sunday, 30 January 2005 22:37:57

PALERMO - An impressive Inter cruised to a 2-0 victory over Palermo in Sunday evening's Serie A Week 21 clash at the Renzo Barbera thanks to two goals from Christian Vieri, the striker's 126th and 127th in the Italian top flight. The result lifts Mancini's men above Udinese into third place and stretches that long unbeaten run to 34 matches.

Vieri headed Inter in front from close range on 5 minutes after Guardalben fumbled Juan Veron's long-range free kick, then Francesco Toldo made a couple of first-class saves to preserve Inter's lead at half time. The custodian caught Toni's shot on the turn from Brienza's pass then spectacularly pushed Grosso's free kick round for a corner.

The Nerazzurri number thirty-two added his second 13 minutes into the second half, slotting home from eleven yards after good work by Cambiasso and Stankovic.

Palermo 's attempts to claw their way back into the match were stifled by a tight Nerazzurri defence as Materazzi and Cordoba did an excellent job on Luca Toni, and second-half sub Julio Cruz went close to adding a third goal for Inter in the closing stages when his shot on the turn was tipped over the bar by Guardalben.

Inter's next match is Wednesday evening's Serie A Week 22 visit of Coppa Italia opponents Atalanta .

MARTINS SEES OFF ATALANTA
Wednesday, 02 February 2005 22:28:58

MILAN - Inter followed up Sunday's win in Palermo with another convincing performance at the Giuseppe Meazza on Wednesday to beat Atalanta 1-0 and consolidate third spot in the Serie A table.

The scoreline suggests a close match, but Fabian Carini was a spectator for most of the ninety minutes as the Nerazzurri produced a dominant display and created chance after chance.

Atalanta twice cleared off the line in the first half, while Obafemi Martins saw his close-range shot come off the crossbar before he opened the scoring just after the half hour. The Nigerian squeezed between Natali and Bellini then turned the Atalanta number six before firing past Calderoni to make it sixteen goals in all competitions this season.

Inter continued to attack the Bergamo Nerazzurri in the second half and were at their most dangerous from set pieces as Vieri, Martins and Stankovic all headed over the crossbar. Bobo had a chance for his 100th Serie A goal for Inter in the final minutes but his low shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Calderoni.

INTER 1-0 ATALANTA (HT: 1-0)

Scorer: Martins 33

TEN-MAN INTER STAGE FIGHTBACK AT TARDINI
Sunday, 06 February 2005 16:59:27

PARMA - Goals from Ivan Cordoba and Christian Vieri saw Inter hold Parma to a 2-2 draw in a dramatic Serie A Week 23 encounter at the Tardini, with the Nerazzurri in ten men for 55 minutes after Marco Materazzi was dismissed.

After twice hitting the woodwork, the Gialloblu took the lead on 36 minutes in an Inter-dominated first half. Mark Bresciano hit the crossbar on 12 minutes then Simplicio hit the post before converting from the spot after Materazzi was sent off for handling the ball in the box. Ex-Nerazzurri keeper Sebastian Frey denied Davids and Stankovic as both midfielders had good chances to equalise on the stroke of half time.

Gilardino doubled for Parma fifteen minutes into the second half with a spectacular effort from inside the Nerazzurri box, and it looked like Inter's long unbeaten run was in serious doubt. But like they have done so often this season, Mancini's men kept their composure and Cordoba pulled one back on 76 minutes, rising above the Parma defence to head home a Mihajlovic inswinger. Christian Vieri equalised from the penalty spot with his 100th Serie A goal for Inter on 82 minutes after Bonera fouled Cordoba in the box, and had an excellent chance for a winner but Adriano's ball across the six-yard box went through his legs at the far post.

The draw stretches Inter's unbeaten run to 36 matches, but the Nerazzurri slip to fourth in the table as Udinese beat Brescia 1-0 at the Rigamonti.

MIHAJLOVIC BRACE SENDS ROMA PACKING
Saturday, 12 February 2005 22:42:26

MILAN - It was billed as a clash between the Serie A's two best attacks, but it was Inter defender Sinisa Mihajlovic who grabbed the limelight with goals in each half to send Roma to a 2-0 defeat in a tight Week 24 match at the Meazza.

The victory sees Mancini's Nerazzurri beat Gianni Invernizzi's long unbeaten run in 1970/71 and set a new club record of 27 league matches without defeat.

With both defences in fine form, this encounter was always going to be decided by set pieces, and Mihajlovic opened the scoring on 23 minutes with a curling free kick which went over the Giallorossi wall and in at the near post.

Roma fought back immediately and heroics from Francesco Toldo denied Totti from a follow-up shot after his first attempt from a free kick was blocked. Ivan Cordoba kept the Nerazzurri in front with a superb tackle on Montella to prevent the Roma striker from grabbing a half-time equaliser.

Sinisa made extra sure of the points in injury time at the end of the second half, beating Pelizzoli with another free kick into the bottom corner after Philippe Mexes was dismissed for a last-man foul on Obafemi Martins.

The result moves Inter back up to third spot with Udinese in action tomorrow, and sees Roma remain without a win in Milan since September 1994.

The Nerazzurri are back in action this Wednesday with Atalanta at home in the Coppa Italia quarter-final return leg.

INTER 1-0 ROMA (HT: 1-0)

Scorers: Mihajlovic 23, 90+2

INTER: 1 Toldo, 2 Cordoba, 4 J. Zanetti , 6 C.Zanetti, 10 Adriano, 11 Mihajlovic, 14 Veron (13 Z
