MILAN - The Nerazzurri ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over local rivals Atalanta at the Meazza on Wednesday to qualify for the Coppa Italia semi-finals and a two-legged clash with either Cagliari or Sampdoria, who meet on 17 March.

Recoba, Emre and Cruz added to Obafemi Martins' goal from the first leg and stretch the Nerazzurri's unbeaten run in all competitions to thirty-eight matches.

Edgar Davids went close to his first goal for Inter when his long-range shot crashed onto the crossbar on 29 minutes. It was a taste of things to come as Alvaro Recoba opened the scoring just after the half-hour. The Uruguayan cut out an Atalanta attack, ran with the ball for over forty yards, played a defence-splitting ball to Cruz then raced into the box to meet the return pass and slot his 65th Nerazzurri goal into an open net.

Inter's second was just as spectacular. Emre received just inside the Atalanta half then dribbled two opponents in a mazy run on goal then beat Calderoni with a crisp, low shot.

Argentine striker Julio Cruz made extra sure of qualification early in the second half, beating his marker to meet Recoba's pin-point left-wing cross and head into the far corner.

Inter's Brazilian superstar Adriano announced he intends to remain with the Nerazzurri for the rest of his career.

“I hope to finish my career here. Inter has a big place in my heart. I am very happy because you can tell the Inter fans love me, and for me this is very important,” he said on the day of his 23rd birthday.

“Inter is like a second home for me,” he added.

These words come as a huge surprise as frequent reports coming out of Milan of late have indicated the Brazilian is set to leave Inter at the end of the season.

Chelsea and Real Madrid have been the two clubs most frequently linked with the giant Brazilian striker.

Inter’s Moratti Celebrates Bittersweet 10th Year Anniversary

Despite all the money spent, Inter have only won one trophy in the past ten years.

When Massimo Moratti took over the Nerazzurri on the 18th of February 1995, many believed that he would be able to repeat his father’s success (Angelo) where the great Inter side of the 60s was created.

However ten years have passed since that day and the only trophy the club has won was a Uefa Cup on the 6th of May 1998 (Inter-Lazio 3-0). Other than that, Moratti has become synonymous with disappointments as ‘La Ben Amata’ only managed two second places in Serie A (1997/98 and 2002/03) with the biggest disappointment being the famous 5th of May one where Inter lost the Scudetto on the last matchday after leading for most of the season.

Twelve different coaches (Bianchi, Suarez, Hodgson, Castellini, Simoni, Lucescu, Lippi, Tardelli, Cuper, Verdelli, Zaccheroni and Mancini) have been hired to bring success to a club which has not won the Scudetto since 1989, but none of them was able to achieve anything except for Gigi Simoni’s Uefa Cup. In one particular season (1998/99) the Nerazzurri had incredibly hired four different coaches (Simoni, Lucescu, Castellini, Hodgson).

Many world class players were bought at (many times) outrageously high prices (Baggio, Ronaldo, Vieri, etc) but these were outnumbered by the number of poor and useless purchases (Centofanti, Vampeta, Caio, Pacheco, etc) which have disappeared from the football world that matters without leaving a trace.

For these reasons, Moratti has a love-hate relationship with his fans. Many love him for always being so generous with the club, but others criticize him for not being consistent enough.

In the mean time, Massimo will always remain in his father’s shadow until, that is, he starts winning big time.
