Primera Liga Weekend Preview: Los Che In Seville And A Galician Derby
Valencia face a daunting visit to sizzling Sevilla, and Deportivo take on Celta Vigo in the always volatile Galician derby, as focus shifts away from Barcelona and Real Madrid for once.
It is also a weekend of reunions, as Andres Palop faces former empoyers Valencia, Maxi Lopez and Fernando Navarro get a chance to strut their stuff against Barcelona, while Pedro Munitis returns to the Bernabeu.
Joaquin also returns to Seville for the first time since his summer move from Real Betis, but to play old rivals Sevilla, who are sure to give him a hostile reception.
Valencia (6th) have picked up just two points from the last nine - two disappointing draws against strugglers Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao, and a loss in Santander - making Sevilla (2nd) huge favourites in Saturday's clash.
However, the European Super Cup winners themselves looked devoid of ideas without the injured Jesus Navas, and were held by Racing last week, adding a twist to the tale.
Barcelona (1st) visit neighbouring islanders Mallorca (11th), looking for something good after a terrible week. The Catalans should be favourites, but Mallorca have kept away from the bottom with relative ease this season, and have looked solid at home.
Rijkaard's boys have a must win clash against Levski Sofia coming up, and will want to wrap this one without expending too much energy, but former Barcelona players Fernando Navarro and Maxi Lopez should have something to say about that.
Real Madrid (3rd) will also be looking to make short work of Racing Santander (14th) at the Bernabeu. With just three points separating them from leaders Barcelona, there is definitely a lot more motivation than making the Bernabeu faithful forget the 3-2 defeat to Celta. salah fakta nehhh!! :jeling:
Speaking of motivation, it also offers Pedro Munitis the chance to make a point against his former team, with support from the lanky Zigic. After a very poor start to the season, Racing are beginning to pull it together, and have only recently beaten Valencia and drawn against Sevilla. Real would do well to be wary.
Deportivo (8th) and Celta Vigo (12th) clash at the Riazor in what promises to be yet another tasty Galician derby, particularly with both teams in very similar form. Just three points separate the duo, and a two goal win will see Celta jump past their bitter rivals. Jorge Andrade and Pablo Garcia could return, in a game that has rarely ended with 22 players on the pitch,
Former Real Madrid man Lopez Caro has his own little derby coming up as Levante (13th)host Atletico Madrid (7th). Javier Aguirre is beginning to stabilize the Atleti ship again after the spate of injuries - with Aguero looking better and better - and they could break into the top four with a win.
Villarreal (10th) and Getafe (5th) clash at El Madrigal amidst stories of Riguelme's rift with the fans, and rumours of a move away. It's a shame, for the Yellow Submarines are just beginning to run into form after a poor start to the season, despite last week's loss at the Vicente Calderon. They will need to put everything aside in order to take on a Getafe side placed above Valencia in the standings.
Zaragoza (4th) host embattled Catalans Nastic (19th) in what looks like a battle of unequals, with Aimar and company overwhelming favourites to heap more misery on the minnows.
Osasuna (17th) will be looking to put last week's 4-1 whipping by Real Madrid behind them as they visit Recreativo Huelva (9th), for whom Florent Sinama-Pongolle is beginning to run into some serious form.
At the wrong end of the table, Espanyol (15th) host Athletic Bilbao (16th) with both sides too close to the bottom for comfort. Lotina's rock bottom Real Sociedad will also be hoping for a change in fortunes as they host Javier Irureta's lost looking Real Betis (18th). |
