Jinhua to Sell Proton Cars in China Under Europestar Brand

July 13 (Bloomberg) -- Proton Holdings Bhd., Malaysia's unprofitable state-controlled carmaker, agreed to supply cars to China's Jinhua Youngman Automobile Manufacturing Co., which will sell the vehicles under the Europestar brand.

Proton agreed to supply at least 30,000 cars to Jinhua in 20 months, it said in a release to the stock exchange in Kuala Lumpur today. The company's parts unit will also supply parts to the Chinese car company.

The Malaysian company's Lotus Group International Ltd. unit will provide engineering and development consultancy services to Jinhua for the development of the cars for the China market. The two companies will have an independent contracting relationship and not a partnership, Proton said.

Proton started talks last year with Jinhua and Chery Automobile Co. to sell cars in China and some Southeast Asian nations, aiming to forge overseas partnerships as sales wane at home. The government, which owns 43 percent of Proton through state investment arm Khazanah Nasional Bhd., is also seeking an overseas partner for Proton after it lost half its market share to rivals such as Toyota Motor Corp.

Jinhua, a luxury coach and truck maker, has a license from the Chinese authorities to produce passenger vehicles, Proton said.
