aku jumpa itenary ni .. budak nih plan dr KL -PEnang -Chiangmai-Luang PRabang- Vientiane
leh aa korang nk usya2
KL- THAILAND-LAOS IN 16 Days
Day 1 KL-Penang by bus. The plan was to stay the night in Penang instead of taking the overnight bus to Hatyai, and yet another night trip to BKK.
Day 2 Penang-Hatyai. Took a van at Butterworth jetty at 11.00 am. Reached Hatyai about 3 hours later. Walked to the train station, bought 2nd class seats to BKK. Butterworth train station sells sleeping berth tickets only. You can get cheap non-AC wood bench 3rd class at Hatyai and there are 3 or 4 more trains departing than the only daily “International” train from Butterworth. Lots of money changers in Penang giving good rates for bahts.
Day 3 BKK-Chiang Mai. Reached BKK in the early morning. Killed time walking around Chinatown. Back to Hualamphong (BKK’s train station) for its air-con, and its toilet & shower facility. Then off to Mochit 2, the sprawling northern bus station, for the night bus to Chiang Mai. Got the bus number from the helpful 'enquiry & tourist information' counter inside Hualamphong.
Day 4 Chiang Mai. 8.00 pm bus and reached Chiang Mai at about 5.30 am. Got onto a songthaew to town center. Still early to check out the guesthouses, walk to the market and a bit of “feel the place”. Check-in, shower, and out again... Chiang Mai, biggest town in the north, is not really that huge; and can be walked in a day. Back to the guesthouse in the early evening, shower again, short nap, and out to the Night Bazaar.
Day 5 Chiang Rai. “Feeling” enough of Chiang Mai, took the morning local non-AC bus to Chiang Rai. About 3-4 hours. Get ready your passport and not stowed it at the bottom of your backpack; as there are police check-points along the roads near the borders. The bus station is in the middle of Chiang Rai, unlike Chiang Mai. There was a night market along the road fronting the bus station.
Day 6. Day-trip to Mae Sai. Its bus station is slightly out of town, and need to take a songtheaw.
Day 7. Day-trip to Chiang Saen and Golden Triangle. These 2 day-trips done on cheap and regular non-AC local buses, about 30 bahts each ride. Similarly to the Golden Triangle from Chiang Saen in a songtheaw.
Day 8 Chiang Rai–Luang Prabang. Hopped onto the 1st bus – 7.00 am – to Chiang Khong. Nearly missed it and it was driving out of the station if not for the lady conductor spotting me with a backpack; yeah, a touristic route...
The bus stopped at the start of the market road leading to the border check-point. Get passport stamped, walk down the concrete ramp to the river, 20 baht boat ride across, and another passport stamp. Welcome to Huay Xai, Laos.
Get money changed (from bahts to kips) at the post office, turn to the right and several blocks up...
Huay Xai is a very small town with only one main street, but its town planners has already foreseen its rapid growth and placed its bus “shack” way out of town – about 5 km away.
After the several ringgits bus rides in Malaysian and Thailand, you somehow know immediately transports is not going to be as cheap, or maybe you’re being fleeced. Bargain hard for the songtheaw to the bus station. The bus is the cheapest option to Luang Prabang.
The journey was “epic”, really roughing it with the Laotians. Leave the 2-days boat ride down the brown river to western tourists.
Day 9 Luang Prabang. The bus left Huay Xai, about 2.00pm and arrived 3.30am. Slept on a bench till daybreak; no point checking into a hotel and pay an extra night. Nobody would be awake at that hour in budget guesthouses... Same as in Huay Xai, bargain hard to get into town; lots of accommodation near the river and its touristic center.
Day 10 Luang Prabang-Vientiane. After a day and a half in Luang Prabang, it was time to get moving again.
Bought a non-VIP bus ticket at the guesthouse, with an arranged tuk-tuk to the bus station; it saved the hassle of bargaining and explaining to the tuk-tuk where I wanted to go and just as well as I didn’t know at that time it was a different station to the one from Luang Prabang. (As you can see by now, I was winging this trip without any map or knowledge.)
Day 11 Vientiane. Arrived into Vientiane’s bus station around 6.00 am and took a Tuk-tuk into town. Walked around, “feeling the place” and checking hotels/guesthouses, got the right directions where to go from a couple, Asian tourists (Singaporeans?), who were up and out into the early morning streets with a camera in hand...
Vientiane is not big, smaller than Chiang Mai, and very much less vehicles, I had walked a couple of times from the Talad Sao market to the river front, where most of the hotels/guesthouses are located, that day.
Day 12 Vientiane-BKK. Having another feel of the place in the morning, I walked to the central bus station at Talat Sao late morning. (There are rows of goldsmith shops on the upper floor of the older complex across the road, beside the newer mall – simply amazing to see so much wealth and gold on display in one place after crossing through hamlets from Huay Xai to Vientiane.)
There are regular International buses to the border – Thai standard VIP. Took it at around 2.00pm, crossed the Mekong into Thai’s Nong Khai; and onto a non-AC, non-VIP bus to BKK; arriving early morning.
Day 13 Bangkok. Took a town bus to the southern bus terminal. Don’t like the prospect of another night in a bus. Option of spending a night and taking the 3rd class train down to Hatyai is just as cheap and better; so I took another town bus to Hualamphong and checked into an inn around the corner...
Day 14 BKK-Hatyai. An interesting overnighter in 3rd class carriage...
Day 15 Hatyai. Arrived in the early morning; checked into a cheap hotel, and a day-trip to Songkhla town.
Day 16 Hatyai-KL. Took the 2.00 pm bus and arrived at midnight. End of “vacation” and spend the next day recuperating! Haha.
Overall budget was more or less 800 ringgits. Accommodation about 40-50 ringgits a night, most expensive bus rides were in Laos – about 50-60 ringgits. Number of towns "seen": 10 - Penang, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Sai, Chiang Saen, Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Hatyai and Songkhla (not counting towns passed through like Chiang Khong, Hua Xai...)
Travel tips:
The kip is not exchangeable outside of Laos. So remember to change all your kips before leaving.
In Vientiane, there was a money changer in the shopping complex opposite the central Talad Sao bus station; and I changed them all back to bahts after getting the bus ticket...
Luang Prabang has a good night market for cloths. There was a row of shops selling shirts (and other stuff)... very decent prices, bought a shirt (with coconut shell buttons), that would probably cost above RM120 in a KL boutique, for less than RM30. |

salam,

Bas air cond. |

Hari pertama kami sempat pi Thalat Sao.
Yg banyaknya kedai jual kain tenunan Laos. Ada juga kedai menjual emas Laos.
