TWO royal police escorts were hospitalised after they were hit by an oncoming car at the stretch near Jerudong Park along the Muara-Tutong Highway yesterday.
One officer suffered fractures on his left shoulder and arm, while another was in shock after they were hit by a female driver, who was believed to be driving beyond the speed limit, failed to stop her car and rammed into the two escorts in the middle of the highway.
The accident occurred around 5.40pm when both escorts stopped the cars on the highway to allow a royal car to pass, police said.
Two drivers were said to have stopped their cars when another car suddenly shot between the two cars, nipped one of the vehicle on the left side and hit the two escort riders.
The female driver was believed to ram into the first escort, while the car she nipped hit the second escort, causing him minor injuries.
Police said the female driver also suffered injures and is currently admiitted to Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital.
When The Brunei Times visited both escorts whose identities are withheld at the Jerudong Park Medical Centre yesterday, a family member said the escorts were in a stable condition and would be discharged in a few days.
The officer who suffered a broken arm said the motorist was driving so fast and did not have enough time to brake, tried to overtake the two vehicles in front of her, but failed and slammed into them.
“I believe she may have driven her car so fast and too near to the vehicle in front of her so she couldn’t hit the brake in time,” he said.
The officer who has been a royal police escort for 13 years said he is lucky that he only suffered a broken shoulder and arm.
“This is the second time I suffered injury while on duty. In 2002, I got injured after a vehicle rammed into me while I was manning a roadblock. I broke the same left shoulder and arm,” he said.
The officer advised motorists to be more careful when driving and follow the speed limits on the highway.
“Motorists should also put enough distance with the vehicle in front of them so that they can brake on time in case of an emergency,” he said.
He added that drivers must be aware of their surroundings and not do things that can distract them while driving.
Families and friends, along with other Royal Brunei Police Force officers, were seen congregating in front of the hospital private rooms to visit the officers.
Traffic police from the Sengkurong Police Station are investigating the accident.
