Man Utd capture Kuszczak on loan

Kuszczak's immediate future has finally been settled
Manchester United have signed Polish goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak on a season-long loan from West Brom, with a view to a possible permanent move.
In exchange, the Baggies will get defender Paul McShane and goalkeeper Luke Steele on a permanent basis.
"He has plenty of ability and knows what challenges the Premiership presents," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson of the 24-year-old.
"He will benefit from working alongside a great keeper like Edwin van der Sar."
Kuszczak, 24, will act as understudy to Van der Sar, with youngster Ben Foster staying a second season at Watford.
Van der Sar is expected to retire after Euro 2008, at which point Kuszczak will press for a first-team place.
West Brom boss Bryan Robson admitted that he was reluctant to allow Kuszczak to leave the Hawthorns.
"I have had several meetings with the player," Robson told the West Brom website.
"He expressed a very strong desire to join United, with the potential of playing in the Premiership and Champions League.
"In the end, we felt that these were exceptional circumstances and that we would be denying Tomasz a major career opportunity if we insisted on him staying."
Kuszczak, who has won four caps for Poland, spent three years in Germany with Hertha Berlin before arriving at West Brom two years ago.
Sir Alex Ferguson's attempts to land the keeper had been frustrated throughout the summer, with an initial ?2.5m bid rejected.
But with Kuszczak now at Old Trafford, Foster getting Premiership experience with Watford and Tim Howard on loan at Everton, United are hopeful they have enough strength in the goalkeeping department to maintain healthy competition for the next five years at least.
The transfer of Steele is unlikely to go down well with Coventry, who signed the youngster on loan from United.
But the player was recalled, then immediately sold to one of their local Coca-Cola Championship rivals. |

Watford sign Foster on loan again

Foster was in excellent form Watford last season
Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has joined Watford on a season-long loan deal for a second time.
The 23-year-old's form as Watford won promotion last season earned him a place on the standby list for England's World Cup squad.
"I was delighted to get the call giving me the all-clear to come down and sign all the paperwork," said Foster, who could play against Chievo on Sunday.
"Now I'm really looking forward to a year in the Premiership with Watford." |

Ronaldo tipped to handle backlash
Wayne Rooney believes Cristiano Ronaldo will cope with any hostility from fans as he continues to come under fire following England's World Cup exit.
Ronaldo was booed by rivals supporters when Manchester United faced Oxford United in a friendly on Tuesday.
But Rooney told BBC Radio Five Live: "It was disappointing to see that happen because he is a great player.
"In the last two years he has been booed at away games but I think he can come out of it a better player."
Rooney also confirmed again that he had settled any issues he may have had with his team-mate, who appeared to encourage the referee to send him off in the World Cup quarter final between England and Portugal.
"He's a good lad and we've got no problem with each other now. We're fine about it," said the England striker.
"I spoke to him on the night after the game. I'm not going to lie, I was disappointed with the way he ran over to the referee.
"But at the end of the day, we weren't team-mates that day. We were rivals. I wanted to win, he wanted to win for his country so we have to get on with it and hopefully do well for Manchester United together."
Ronaldo's behaviour in that match and accusations that he had faked injury and simulated fouls is thought to have cost the winger the award for best young player at the World Cup.
Germany's Lukas Podolski took the title.
"He should have won the young player award at the World Cup but because of the criticism he got it was taken away from him," added Rooney.
"I was disappointed for him, I think everyone at the club was disappointed for him.
"He had a good tournament and I don't think he should have had it taken away for him because of that." |

Red Devils new Diarra favourites
Skysports.com understand that Manchester United have emerged as favourites to sign long-time target Mahamadou Diarra from Lyon.
Real Madrid have been in pole position to snare the Mali international for some time but it is believed that United have rejoined the chase for his signature and their bold move could be decisive.
Although Diarra has spoken of his desire to play for Real, it is believed that he would not turn down the chance to head for Old Trafford if the two clubs can agree on a fee.
Lyon have stressed their determination to keep Diarra, who has been a key figure in their side since arriving from Vitesse Arnhem, but they have already bagged midfielders Kim Kallstrom and Jeremy Toulalan this summer.
Furthermore, Paris Saint Germain's Modeste M'Bami is also being considered as a reinforcement for the Ligue 1 champions.
There is the belief that a deal can be agreed before the transfer deadline at the end of August as Sir Alex Ferguson looks for a long-term replacement for Roy Keane. Villarreal's Marcos Senna remains another midfielder on the Carling Cup holders' hit-list but it is understood that Diarra has been the top target all summer.
Real will also push hard for the 25-year-old's services if l'OL do agree to listen to offers but United are thought to be ready to fend off the strong rival interest. |

Roon: I'm ref target
WAYNE ROONEY reckons he is being targeted by headline-grabbing referees.
The Manchester United striker copped a three-match ban for his red card in a pre-season tournament in Amsterdam.
He said: ?eferees are trying to get the headlines too much rather than just refereeing. In the Premiership referees tend to let it go a bit, but foreign refs pull the game up and slow it down and get the cards out.
?eferees get headlines with some of the decisions they make and it is only natural some of them like that. That is the way the game has gone and sometimes the players have to handle the consequences.?
Rooney has received four red cards in his career, three of them from foreign referees.
But he insisted he will not change the way he plays.
His latest sending off came against Porto in a tournament in Amsterdam last week when he jumped for a high ball and caught Pepe in the face with his trailing arm.
Rooney protested his innocence and said he will be gutted if the ban is upheld.
He said: ?f you watch the video of the incident you will see I have not taken my eyes off the ball once. I jumped up and on my way down my hand brushed him in the face.
?e has gone down and stayed down. The ref had to make a quick decision but I feel harshly done by.?
Angry United manager Alex Ferguson is ready to appeal against Rooney? suspension. |
