Champions League Qualifying Draw Made

You may have thought the season only just finished, but this morning Uefa have made the draw for the first and second qualifying rounds of the Champions League at their Nyon headquarters.

Among the match-ups made today at the draw was one pairing Scottish Premier League runners-up Rangers with either Zeta of Montenegro or Lithuania's FBK Kaunas in the second round of Champions League qualifying.

Lithuanian champions Kaunas are sponsored by the bank of Vladimir Romanov, the majority shareholder of Rangers' SPL rivals Heart of Midlothian.

Kaunas will be favourites to get past Zeta as this is the first time Montenegro has had a side in a Uefa competition - the country is the newest in the Uefa fold following secession from the Serbia & Montenegro political entity.

If Rangers beat eith Kaunas or Zeta, they will be in the third and final qualifying round, which is also the stage at which Scottish champions Celtic enter.

In other ties, previous European champions Steaua Bucharest are paired with Zaglebia of Poland in the second qualifying round, while Besiktas will play either Sheriff of Moldova or Andorra's FC Ranger's in the same round, and Levski Sofia take on Tampere (Finland) or Murata (San Marino).  Slavia Prague will play Dudelange (Luxembourg) or Zilina (Slovakia).

In the first qualifying round, Irish Premier League Champions Linfield face Elfsborg from Sweden, while Derry City face Armenian Premier League side Pyunik.

Welsh Premier League winners The New Saints (previously TNS or Total Network Solutions) have been paired with Latvian champions Ventspils.

If The New Saints progress, they will face Austrian side Salzburg, while Linfield would meet Hungarians Debrecen and Derry would face the experienced Ukrainian side, Shakhtar Donetsk.
