Man Utd to open talks with Rooney
Rooney signed for United from Everton for £27m
Manchester United are ready to open talks with star striker Wayne Rooney over a new contract.
England international Rooney, 20, wants to extend the six-season deal he signed when he joined United in August 2004.
"At the moment we are concentrating on this transfer window but it is in our plans to talk with Wayne," said United chief executive David Gill.
"It is positive when a player wants to sign a contract. We will do it as it is in our interests as well as his."
Rooney has become a crucial figure in United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's side and forms part of a young group of players seen as key in the Old Trafford club's future.
"We want Wayne Rooney to stay here for a lifetime," said Ferguson.
"He is a fantastic footballer. He has the energy, enthusiasm and desire to remain at the top.
"We have a group of good young players here and we want them to stay together for a long time.
"Without question, Wayne is part of that and I am pleased he is so enthusiastic to stay." |

Man Utd's Martin moves to Rangers
Martin has been involved in United's pre-season friendlies
Rangers have signed Manchester United left winger Lee Martin on a loan deal until the end of the year.
The 19-year-old, signed from Wimbledon in 2003, passed a medical and agreed terms with the Glasgow club.
And he said: "I know a lot of the players by name only. I used to play football computer games and Rangers were one of the teams.
"Now these are the guys I will be training with, so I am looking forward to meeting them all."
Martin, for whom United could have to pay £1m if he reaches agreed targets, spent the second half of last season in Belgium with Royal Antwerp.
And he featured in many of United's pre-season friendlies and impressed in Glasgow two weeks ago when Manchester United defeated Celtic 3-0.
But he has only played once for the United first-team in a competitive game and is not yet seen as ready for the Premiership.
Now he is hoping to develop under new Rangers manager Paul Le Guen.
"I am delighted to come to such a club as Rangers," he said.
"It is unbelievable and I have high expectations during my loan period.
"The whole reason for me coming here is to improve as a player on and off the pitch.
"It is amazing that I was in Glasgow just a couple of weeks ago to play for Manchester United against Celtic and now here I am signing for Rangers.
"I know this is a new period for Rangers with a new manager and new players so for me to come in and be a part of it is really exciting."
Le Guen is hopeful that Rangers can retain the services of the youngsters beyond the end of the year.
"He has signed until December but we hope to get him until the end of the season.
"Alex Ferguson wants the possibility to take him back and I understand that.
"But there is a very good chance that we could keep him until the end of the season.
"We know Manchester United are a great club and to have a good relationship with their manager and the club is good for us." |

Silvestre & Park extend contracts
France's Silvestre will stay at Man Utd until 2009
Manchester United pair Mikael Silvestre and Park Ji-Sung have signed contract extensions to stay at Old Trafford until 2009 and 2010 respectively.
French World Cup star Silvestre has opted to fight for his place in the team despite the arrival of Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra.
Silvestre, 29, joined Man Utd for £4m from Inter Milan in 1999.
"Mikael has been an important member of the squad for seven years now," said Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
"His experience at the club will help the younger players as they develop and he has a central role to play in the first team."
The 25-year-old Park has impressed in his first season since joining from PSV Eindhoven for £4m.
"I am pleased to have secured him to the end of the decade at least," said Ferguson.
"He has adapted well to the Premiership and is probably the best off-the-ball player we have.
"His movement and awareness is fantastic and he has been blessed with good stamina, a great attitude and good character."

Man Utd pair appeal against bans
Manchester United have appealed to the Football Association against charges given to Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes that could land them three-match bans.
Charges of violent conduct and serious foul play were brought after the pair's red cards during a Manchester United friendly in Holland, against Porto.
Unless the suspensions are overturned, the pair will miss the trip to Charlton and home games with Watford and Spurs.
The pair will, however, be available for the league opener against Fulham.
That is because the report was delayed by post, and any ban can only come into force 14 days after the FA is informed.
The report contains 23 pages, composed of observations from referee Ruud Bossen, and also full reports of both incidents from both assistant referees and the fourth official.
Despite that, it appears likely that both men will have their punishments downgraded to yellow cards, which would effectively clear Rooney and leave Scholes to serve a one-match suspension for the Charlton clash as his dismissal was for two yellow cards. :clap: |
