VDS bids goodbye to Old Trafford

Edwin van der Sar skippered Manchester United in his final Premier League game before heading into retirement.

Van der Sar wore the armband as United beat Blackpool 4-2 at Old Trafford to finish their 19th title-winning season on a massive high
"I would like to thank the manager for bringing me here six years ago," said the 40-year-old Dutchman.

"Maybe it was a couple of years too late.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. The fans, the players and the manager will always have a warm place in my heart.

"Manchester United is the biggest club in the world. Now we have to get that trophy [UEFA Champions League] next Saturday."

Chelsea's defeat at Everton meant United cruised home by an impressive nine points, which will go some way to silencing the doubters who have insisted the Red Devils are not
a great side.

"Looking back over the years, none has been more dramatic than this," said Ferguson.
"Apart from the excitement, there have been all those last minute goals. It is the nature of our club to do it that way. They epitomise the spirit of Manchester United.

"There have been a a lot of great performances. All that nonsense about this not being a great Manchester United team. It is a great feat.

"Yes, we had some disappointing performances away from home, but at home we have been fantastic.

"We scored another four goals today, seven against Blackburn, five against Birmingham.
"We have beaten Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham here. That is pretty good.
"And now we have won the title more times than anyone else in the country. It is great for our history."

Ferguson now faces the toughest of tasks deciding which 11 players will start at Wembley, who the other seven on the bench will be and, of those who collected medals this afternoon, which ones will spend the evening sat in the stand.

"I could pick four or five teams next week and they wouldn't let us down," he said.

Barcelona star Gerard Pique: Manchester United made a man of me    Defenderreveals that while the Premier League made him tougher, he will usewhat he learned with the Red Devils against them in the ChampionsLeague final at Wembley    By Laurie Bonne    22 May 2011 21:03:00

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique admits that while he had a hard time adjusting to life in England, he will use what he picked up with Manchester United against them on in the Champions League final on Saturday.

TheSpaniard had a four-year spell at Old Trafford where he had to come toterms with the more physical style of game, but he was not Sir AlexFerguson’s first choice when it came to United’s regular defensive line.

"When I arrived in Manchester, the club put me with a family," he told News of the World

"After a few days I had an idea of what was in store for me: cakes or fish and chips.

"Oncethey served up this warm lemon cake - disgusting. Still, I neverregretted my choice because my time in England made a man of me.

"Itwas another way of playing, more direct and physical. I learned how touse my body to defend with because players often came through you frombehind.

"I then worked out like never before and put on nine kilos in muscle."

The 24-year-old was snubbed for the Red Devils’ Champions League final in Moscow against
Chelsea but he lifted the same trophy a year later after returning with the Catalans by defeating Manchester United 2-0 in Rome.

Ahead of the clash at Wembley, Pique compared current boss Pep Guardiola’s coaching style to Ferguson’s.

Hesaid: "They both have the ability to motivate sides, although Guardiolaspeaks more calmly while Ferguson will try to harangue his troops.”

alamak parliment british buat kecoh pasal csndal Ryan Giggs pulop . . .

Ryan Giggs has been named as the footballer at the centre of a privacy row by an MP in Westminster. Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming used parliamentary privilege to name the footballer in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon. Mr Hemming, who has been campaigning on the issue, said: "With about 75,000 people having named Ryan Giggs on Twitter, it is obviously impracticable to imprison them all." House of Commons speaker John Bercow took the MP to task over his action, saying: "Let me just say to the honourable gentleman, I know he's already done it, but occasions such as this are occasions for raising the issues of principle involved, not seeking to flout for whatever purpose." MPs and peers cannot be prosecuted for statements in the chamber of the House of Commons or in the House of Lords, even if they break the law. Giggs is alleged to have had an affair with former Miss Wales and Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas, but his lawyers prevented the publication of the story by taking out a court order claiming it infringed his rights to privacy. This prevented not only publication of the story, but also prevented any mention of it in the media.

Manchester United expect to sign £17.5m Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea within two weeks    RedDevils extremely confident after Spain under-21 star indicates he wantsto move to Old Trafford as back-up target Maarten Stekelenburg looksfor a different club        21 May 2011 08:31:00

Manchester United are confident of signing £17.5 million Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea in the next two weeks.

Unitedmanager Sir Alex Ferguson has identified De Gea as the perfectlong-term replacement for Edwin van der Sar and the Premier Leaguechampions have been talking to the Spaniard for several weeks about amove.

De Gea had suggested he will wait until the end of June before making a decision but Goal.comunderstands the Red Devils are expecting to land their man within aweek of the Champions League final against Barcelona on May 28.

“Weknow the keeper we want and are in a good position, and I'm sure we canget the deal done,” said chief executive David Gill last Sunday.

Hewas talking about De Gea, 20, who has indicated he feels theopportunity to join United is too good to turn down and is ready toreject a new contract offer from Atletico, where his current dealexpires in 2013.

A deal worth £17.5m has been agreed inprincipal with United for some time and Ferguson is convinced the Spainunder-21 international has the ability to be the club's No.1 for manyyears.

The Scot even missed United's League Cup win atScunthorpe earlier this season to watch De Gea in action and hascontinued his pursuit despite goalkeeping coach Erik Steel's preferencefor Schalke's Manuel Neuer, who is close to a move to Bayern Munich.

Furtherindication that United are close to signing to De Gea is provided bythe fact the representatives of Maarten Stekelenburg have accepted theAjax goalkeeper is going to miss out on his dream move and are nowencouraging talks with other clubs.

Ferguson spoke earlier thisweek about his desire to sign three players in the summer transferwindow, with a goalkeeper his most pressing concern as 40-year-old Vander Sar is retiring at the end of the season.

De Gea, who hasbeen compared to Real Madrid and Spain keeper Iker Casillas, broke intothe Atletico side in 2009 before helping the club to win the EuropaLeague last season and the Uefa Super Cup in August.
