ESHA BECOMES DESPERATE FOR A HIT AFTER HER FLOP

Esha Deol resurfaces with Hrithik Roshan in Na Tum Jano Na Hum and is hoping that it will wash out the damage done to her by her flop debut film Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche. She is pinning all her hopes on her second film which was initially supposed to be her debut film. For sometime after her debut Koi Mere?.flopped, Esha was in a state of depression. But a believer in God and with tremendous confidence in herself, Esha pushed her wounds behind and decided to take life as it came.

No doubt that life after a flop can be a nightmare in the film industry. Unless, of course, you have the ability to lick your wounds in private and present a brave face to the world. However, for her failure to hit success with Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche, Esha partly blames the script of the film that changed somewhere mid-way during the shooting.

Esha does accept some responsibility too for her debut turning a flop show. "I didn't look my best in the movie and that was unpardonable. No actress should sleepwalk through the film even if it's her debut. Although I thought the critics were too harsh on me. As a 19 year old I think I'm allowed to make mistakes in life, but then my mom told me that critics hadn't spared her either when Sapno Ke Saudagar released." Esha hastily points out, "Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Kajol had flop debuts. No one wrote them off. I think I deserve more than one film to prove myself."

Esha has a couple of films in hand right now, including Na Tum Jano Na Hum and Kya Dil Ne Kaha. Does she wish they were her debut films. "Na Tum Jano Na Hum was supposed to be my first film but there were technical problems so the film got delayed. At that time I was told that making a debut in a film where I had a meaty role would be better. If only Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche had worked, all the tongues would stop wagging."

Esha Deol has finally made her bow with Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche and it must be said that her entry was far from impressive. Part of the blame for this should go to writer-director Vinay Shukla, whose effort here was lackluster. Shukla may have helped Shabana Azmi bag the National Award for Best Actress for 'Godmother', but here he failed as a filmmaker. The story was not original and bore a strong resemblance to Shah Rukh Khan's debut film as hero, 'Deewana', with shades of 'Mother India' in the climax. This marred the prospects of a technically well-made film.

Critics have not stopped writing about how Esha needs to do much more physically to keep herself fit and also take a tummy-tuck if possible.

"I'M A DIRECTOR'S ACTOR : DEVGAN"

Though Ajay Devgan's first project, Phool Aur Kaante had romance as well as action he was more appreciated and praised for his action scenes in the film. That's why he was labeled as an action hero. After which he did lots of action films and people liked him a lot. But some time back, Ajay decided to change his track and do some light films rather than sticking to same action films again and again. He did comedy in Ishq, which also had Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla and Kajol in it. His role in Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha along with Kajol was also a hit.

Maybe the success of these films prompted Ajay to do light roles rather than sticking to the action films. But in recent times his films like Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke failed to attract the viewer. However, people liked his character in Lajja.

Well, now Ajay Devgan has two films that are all set to hit the marquee, Ramgopal Varma's Company and Milan Luthria's Chori Chori. In Company Ajay plays a role of underworld don and it is an out-an-out action film whereas, Chori Chori is a romantic film. While Company released on April 12 Chori Chori will probably release in the last week of April.

Those who have seen the rushes of Company are all praises for Ajay Devgan and say that it is one of his career's best performance. On the other hand, the promos of Chori Chori have caught the eyes of the people and is generating a lot of curiosity. Apart from these films he's also busy shooting for Rajkumar Santoshi's yet untitled film on Bhagat Singh which will release on August 15, and that proves that he is doing films on a variety of subjects.

But despite doing varied roles he is still stuck with the image of an action hero but he does not agree that the action hero image over-shadows his films that feature him in roles other than an action hero. "Image of an actor does not really matter. Films with good script, music, performance and direction have always done well."

For an actor Ajay feels that spontaneity is the key for a good performance as it is the most essential quality for a budding actor. "The spontaneity comes from being a decent human being with a lot of integrity," believes Ajay. When you ask him on his opinion whether acting is an art or craft? He tells you that it is both. "It is both an intuitive and an intellectual process. There are no definite demarcations here."

As far as selecting a film or a role is concerned there's more than his instincts that is at work. "I don't believe in following my instincts in selecting a film. It usually depends on the whole set-up. There are so many factors that must be taken into account - the script, director, character, team. Things like marketing strategy, target audience, etc. matter too. As I said earlier, it's important to me to be comfortable with the people I'm working with. You can never be certain about your decision anyway."

He calls himself a director's actor and likes to follow his directors. "Once I decide to do a film, I leave the rest to the director, usually. He is the captain of the ship. However, film-making is a collaborative affair. Good directors are always open to well meaning suggestions. As an actor, I share with the director my understanding of the character I am supposed to portray." As far as scaling new heights as an actors is concerned Ajay is not ambitious in the sense that he has no conscious goals. "I want new challenges, explore new avenues. I am not consciously planning it though. I believe in going with the flow. People, who plan a lot, do not have the time to execute their plans! I like going a little slow with my decisions. I work at ease. Bigger the dream, hastier is the decision. Therefore, I take it easy."

Doing Company has been a learning experience. "It's a pleasure to work with Ramu he is so clear about everything in life and plans every character and their moves meticulously. It's amazing to watch him at work because he's never tensed nor does he puts any kind of pressure on you. Similarly, Chori Chori has been an exciting experience. It is a simple story but the director Milan Luthria has made sure that not a single scene is cliched. Doing a film on Bhagat Singh with Rajji (Rajkumar Santoshi) is like sort of a dream come true for me is all I can say about that film at the moment."

Aishwarya Rai has refuted the media reports about her link up or break up with Vivek Oberoi. Besides, she has blasted a section of the media for spreading rumor of linking her with Reliance Industries' tycoon Anil Ambani. She adds that she has never talked to the media about her personal life. So, there is no question of her any affair or linkup with anybody. KAREENA TO PLAY HELEN'S ROLE IN 'DON'S REMAKE

After watching 'Dil Chahta Hai', Kareena Kapoor had been dreaming of acing in Farhan Akhtar's movie. She is very excited that Akhtar has signed her in the main role in his long-awaited remake of 'Don'. Akhtar also believes that only Kareena can do justice to the coveted role in his 'Don'. Kareena did take sometime after her return from her overseas shooting to say 'yes' to Farhan's offer.

She will play the role assigned to Helen in the original 'Don' made by Chandra Barot. Apart from it, Kareena will also picturize the famous song 'Yeh Mera Dil Pyaar Ka Deewana' with Shah Rukh Khan. The same was picturized by Helen with Amitabh Bachchan in the earlier 'Don'. It is learnt that Farhan is going to repeat Asha Bhonsle's song in the remake. Similarly, Kishore Kumar's rendering of song "Khaike Paan Banareswal" without any change. You may recall that the remake of 'Don' will be the second movie of Kareena with Shah Rukh after she worked with him in 'Asoka'. She had declined to accept Karan Johar's offer to act in Shah Rukh starrer 'Kal Ho Na Ho'.

KARISMA'S HUSBAND COMPLAINS OF EXTORTION THREAT

Industrialist Sunjay Kapur, embroiled in a legal battle with estranged actor wife Karisma Kapoor, has complained to Delhi police that he has received an extortion threat. Kapur said he received e-mail last week demanding Rs 500 million. The police have registered a case and are carrying out investigations. It was not clear whether the demand was connected with the tussle between Sunjay and Karisma over the custody of their five-month-old daughter Samaira.

Besides, Sunjay Kapur's counsel has expressed "shock" at the media coverage of his reply to actress Karishma Kapoor's affidavit filed in the Delhi High Court. "We are shocked at media reports on the subject of our reply to the court. At no point did we make our responses to the court public," his counsel said. "Since the matter is sub-judice and concerns the welfare of an infant, it is essential that all parties exercise restraint and not give publicity to documents relating to the case. "Our prime concern is the welfare of the child and we strongly feel that issues pertaining to a minor should not be made subjects of public discussion," the counsel added.
