Malaysia has fallen in love with Jericho and Kristine

JUST like the Korean and Taiwanese soap operas that are the rage on local TV these days, Philippine-produced dramas are making waves in other Asian countries. Malaysia, for instance, has fallen in love with "Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas" and its stars, Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa.
"SWNW" is not the first ABS-CBN serial to hit Malaysian TV. First, there was "Mula sa Puso," starring Claudine Barretto and the late Rico Yan. It was followed by "Pangako sa 'Yo," which gave birth to the erstwhile Jericho-Kristine love team.
Romance
When the couple's real-life romance ended, the storyline of "Sana'y" took a sharp turn that led to the inclusion in the soap of Jericho's ex-girlfriend, Angelika dela Cruz, and Rosales' fellow Hunks member, Diether Ocampo, who eventually got involved with Kristine.
Reason
The reason why ABS-CBN's prized talents are such a hit in Malaysia, according to a compatriot working in Kuala Lumpur, is that Filipino stars are regarded as exceptionally good-looking.
That's flattering, of course, considering there's also widespread subscription to cable TV (which offers Hollywood fare). Our source added that all foreign drama serials and films on cable and national TV are subtitled in the national language, Bahasa Malaysia.
During our recent trip to Malaysia, we found out that "American Idol" was also hot in that part of the world. We watched the show with an Indian expat who rooted for Contantine Maroulis.
We also observed that the cineplexes were dominated by the latest American movies. There were just a couple of Asian releases, like the horror franchise, "The Eye 10." (We are way behind in this department, as only the third or fourth installment has been shown here.)
We heard a variety of sounds as diverse as the ethnic backgrounds of the residents of Malaysia. Wafting through the air were songs in Malaysian, Indian, English (from the sanitized version of Eminem's "Real Slim Shady" to the remix of Destiny's Child's "Survivor") and other languages, including the theme from the soap, "Winter Sonata"--in its original Korean lyrics!
Censorship
There were about 10 radio stations, a Malaysian citizen of Chinese descent told us. Eight of them play English songs, while the rest are in Malay, Chinese or Indian. He added that there's censorship everywhere--in the movies, on TV shows, and in the music they listen to--even in the magazines they read!
We chanced upon a copy of FHM ,and it was nothing like what we have here: There were no sexy spreads and racy columns. In fact, it looked like a regular women's magazine.
