JACKIE SHROFF

Q: You have done an advertisement for zarda though you were earlier against tobacco and liquor ads. Why this volte face ?

A:I did feel strongly about endorsing addictive products like cigarettes and liquor because I have two growing children in the house. As a responsible parent, it is imperative that one should keep the young ones away from such influences. However, it is difficult to say how and why I did this advertisement. I still maintain that such ads are bad for the children. For instance, I never smoke in a film until I am playing the bad guy so that children know that smoking is associated with bad people.

HRITHIK IS LIKE MY BROTHER

Shahrukh Khan has been in the news recently. Not for his films, but for the controversies he was involved in. First it was the Filmfare awards function where he was infuriated at the crowds which mobbed only starboy Hrithik Roshan and ignored Khan completely. So angry was he that he boycotted the media after that. The second recent instance was when he acted in a cold drink ad campaign which showed his rival at the box-office Hrithik in bad taste. What was more, he has been targeted by the media recently for not taking his partner Juhi Chawla in the film Ashok The Great. Juhi is a partner in the joint company Dreamz Unlimited who is producing this film. Critics say that although their maiden venture Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani in which they both acted. was a disaster at the box-ofiice, Shahrukh was no better in Josh where he played brother of Aishwarya Rai. Now, Shahrukh's much awaited film Mohabbatein is on the verge of release (scheduled date October 27, which will coincide with the release of Hrithik starrer Mission Kashmir). In an exclusive chat, Sharukh tries to clear all the clouds of suspicion hanging around him since last year.

On becoming so money-oriented

People criticise me for all this. But tell me the name of one person in this industry who has come for a social cause or for charity. They are all here to earn money. Yes, I am earning money by dancing and performing in private functions, but tell me how is this going to harm others. I am not cheating anyone, neither am I snatching away anybody's rights. Then, why is all this noise ranged against me. But, let me tell you money has not been only important thing in my life. I have sometimes worked in films on such a low fee that if I tell you, you won't believe it. The media says I am taking millions for my films, but I am really not that money-oriented. If I like a script, I may not take even a penny for that film. It all depends on the kinds of roles I get to enact.'

On his current phase in film career

`There is nothing wrong in my career. I am totally satisfied with it. We never expected Phir Di Bhi Hai Hindustani to be a great hit. I am not in a position to comment on how it fared in other countries but it did handsome business in small towns . Then this film was also made in a different genre and for a niche audience. So, as per our calculations, this film was not a loss at all. Then, there are people who term Josh as a major flop. I say they should check the trade figures. The film did roaring business in first two weeks. In fact it had all the 28 shows house full in big cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Calcutta alike. If a film draws such type of initials, the cost is recovered in its second week of release only. Let me remind you that the film was not of a very big budget.

On playing the role of Aishwarya's lover in Mohabbatein

Yes, I did play Aishwarya's brother in Josh. But Josh was not real life. Where is the contradiction? Today, the audience is matured enough to understand what is happening in reel life and what are the bare facts of real life. If I now play Aishwarya's lover in the coming film, I do not expect that there is going to be any sort of complications. In fact, I am getting good feed back from my fans. And, the director of Mohabbatein is no other than Aditya Chopra who has given me a mega hit like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge . He understands his story better than me. His father Yash Chopra was very much involved in the film, and he is a person who belives in perfection. If he had even a one per cent hitch on that, the story would have been all different.

On not taking Juhi Chawla in Ashok The Great

Glamour industry is like an open stage, here every move is being watched. So we had thought over your question even before starting this film. We expected people to grill us on this. But, we are partners in our work. We want to deliver the best on screen. The character of the heroine in this film is of an adolescent girl, and Juhi is now a matured heroine. This was the only reason that Juhi is not doing this role. It is not compulsory that we will work in all our home productions. May be in our next film the hero can come from outside. We are in business and we have to think commercial as per the demand of the story and more importantly the market.'

And on competition with Hrithik.

This is also all media-built. I have worked with Hrithik's father in King Uncle, Koyla and Karan-Arjun. During these films, Hrithik used to be with us as an assistant director. We share good vibes. He is like my brother. In this industry, every one can carve out his/her place. And that's it. Hrithik cannot take my position in the industry and vice versa. I think I have been clear enough in answering your question.

Role in Mohabbatein

In this film, I play the role of Aryan who is a teacher in Gurukul. He supports three young pairs on the campus who are in love. The Principal of the institute (Amitabh Bachchan) takes all this as nonsensical. This leads to a rift between Aryan (played by me) and the Principal. Rest you can see on the screen in just a few days. I am sure people who believe in love will love the movie very much.'

BACK FROM COLD STORAGE AND RIDING A HIGH WAVE

Sunil Shetty is one of the few actors who gets along well with everybody in the showbiz industry. Having started off as a businessman, acting was his passion which eventually forced him to try his luck in Bollywood. Written off as an actor after his first film, Sunil worked hard and with sheer perseverance has been able to establish himself in the industry as an actor. Today he can afford to be choosy about the roles and films he would like to do.

He has had four hits in a row - Hera Pheri, Refugee, Jungle and Dhadkan - which owe their success to Sunil's outstanding performances in which he has out-performed his colleagues.

Priyadarshan's KASHMAKASH and YEH TERA GHAR YEH MERA GHAR, Rajiv Rai's ISHQ MOHABBAT PYAAR, Rahul Rawail's KHATTA MEETHA, Mahesh Manjrekar's EHSAAS and J.P.Dutta's JHELUM are some of his forthcoming films.

Considering your last few releases it seems you've now decided to do a variety of roles rather than stick to only action roles?

Yes, to do diverse roles has been a conscious decision on my part. I arrived at that after a lot of thinking and in the process realised that I was feeling bored of doing only action oriented roles. I needed to grow as an actor and prove that I have more than just the ability to do action roles in me. BORDER,HERA PHERI, REFUGEE, JUNGLE and DHADKAN. In AAGHAAZ too I have a role that is different from the usual.

What is your new film which was launched a couple of weeks back all about, is it another film that has you in a challenging role?

Yes, very much indeed. It has been tentatively titled, EHSAAS . The story of the film is set against the backdropof sports and the confrontation between a father and a son forms the base for the dramatic moments in the film. It is a great subject and I am really looking forward to working in the film which will be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar who is one of my favourite director. Neha has been cast as my heroine in the film.

Are you a sports enthusiast in your real life too?

Yes, very much. Infact had I not become an actor I would have become a sportsman. I never miss an opportunity to indulge in my favourite sports whenever time permits me. The best part about this film is that we will shoot for the film in a 35 day long schedule at a stretch and that I think will prove very advantageous to the film.

Coming back to your career do you agree that it has been very inconsistent?

For me my journey from my first film,BALWAAN to the latest DHADKAN has proved to be very fruitful. In the beginning I was crawling , then I stood up and then learnt to walk. Now it is time for me to run. And run, I will not like to run in the rat race but instead run a marathon. I have no regrets at all at the way my career has shaped up so far. When I joined nobody took me serious as an actor, there were even people who passed very nasty comments about my acting skills. But with time I've proved all of them wrong. Today I'm getting the best of the banners and directors to work with. Critics today feel that I can act, my fans love me and my family feels proud of me. My career has been like a see-saw but I've enjoyed every moment of it. Every phase of my career has taught me something and I've learnt from my mistakes. I think I have finally arrived as an actor.

What do you think must have possibly gone wrong with your career after a promising start?

It was just a choice of a few projects that I should not have taken up but i went on to do them for various reasons. Some of these films were offered by friends and I could not refuse them. Then I got this image of an action hero and people felt taking me in films other than an action film was a risk. So I was deprived of the kind of films that I wanted to do. So that created a lot of hurdles in my path but fortunately I've overcome them now.

Do you intend to take up directing films in the future?

No way, please, spare me. To be honest, I don't think I have the makings of a director in me. I feel I dont have the talent in me to turn a dream into reality. I'm happy being an actor.

You have said that you will get into the business of production and distribution of films so can you tell us when is that going to happen?

That will take some time because I will get into that business only after I feel I've had enough as an actor and there's nothing more to achieve for me as an actor. Until that point I would like to just concentrate on my acting. Production and distribution are full time business and so I will step into it only when I feel I have the time to do it.

Do you think that the entry of new actors like Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan and the others will reduce the amount of work for actors of your generation?

India is the largest film producing country in the world and maximum films in India are produced in Bombay. So there will be enough work for each one of us. I dont know the reason but whenever there is a new set of actors coming into the industry, there are people who say that the earlier set of actors will be finished. Which is really strange because there is enough work for everybody. Fresh talent is always good for the industry but it never affects anybody.

"I DON'T ACT TO WIN OSCARS??.MY IDEA IS TO ENTERTAIN THE RICKSHAW-PULLER" : GOVINDA

He is indeed an exception in an industry in which everybody is fighting for a meatier role. Govinda took most by surprise recently when he refused to play chunnibabu's role in Sanjai Leela Bhansali's forthcoming Devdas. Just before that, he had turned down a good role in Subhash Ghai's Taal which eventually landed in Anil Kapoor's lap winning him quite a few awards.
Govinda's last hit was a year ago with the David Dhawan directed Haseena Maan Jayegi. But, Govinda is never desperate. He is carefully assessing his two coming films Shikari and Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai. A crossfire with Govinda:

* You completed Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai in just three months and still there are allegations that Govinda is a "latecomer" on the sets. This tag seems to be permanently fixed to you. Please comment.

--I think I don't know how to handle (or man-handle) these gossip mongers. I have been in this industry now for almost two decades and this tag is stuck to me like some one has lagaoed fevicol. But, if you ask me, I just don't care about all these allegations. It sounds nonsensical anyway to say that I don't care for my schedules. If I will not take care of my films then who else will ? How did I complete so many films ? Why do producers repeat me if I have such a bad image ? Bring a producer to me who has got the courage to speak such a thing in front of me??(slows down) In fact, what's happening is that there is a group of people who with the help of some of their friends in the media are trying to shelve some of my good projects. But let me tell them all that this virar ka chhokra has now learnt all the tricks of their trade.

* You say that there is a planned yellow journalism against you. I hope you recall that you are playing the role of such a journalist in Tanuja Chandra's next movie?

--First of let me make clear that there is no such thing. And if there is something like this then in that role also I will try to expose the bad aspects of yellow journalism instead of protecting or advocating it. A role is a role for me. Every actor wishes to get as many different roles as one could possibly get. You must feel happy for me as I am getting all kinds of roles.

* It is said that you also have a very scary kind of role in N. Chandra's Shikari. Is it an attempt to change your image or are you just taking one more risk?

-- I have been given the title of Entertainer Hero and this is the only award of which I have been very possessive. I always try to get rid of labels that some people try to stick on to me. I changed the track to family films when I was labeled a dancing hero. When they started calling me emotional, I switched to action and there also I was chased to go and try comedy. Has any other actor tried so many genres in Hindi films in the last two decades with such success. Yes , Shikari is an offbeat film for me. I am not doing a David Dhawan kind of film this time. I may shock my fans this time.

* How do you react when any of your much- hyped films bombs at the box office?

-- I take life as it comes to me. I do not dream of winning an Oscar one day. I just want to make sure that the poor rickshaw wallah who spends his little fortune to watch my film gets his money's worth when he comes to see my movie after a day's hard work. So my movies are like a tonic to him. My films are not always foolproof, they flop also?.. But, I can assure you that my producers never lose money. They recover their cost anyhow.

* Tell me about this controversy that Aishwarya has refused to work with you?

-- This is one more rubbish being spread about me. I am working with Ash in Albela and she has never complained of working with me. There was some problem once when I could not reach at a particular schedule, but that was too long back and I had explained reasons for this to Ash. She told me herself that she had no complaints after hearing me out.

* Tell me something about your role in Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai.

--As the film has been directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, it has a gripping screenplay. I would not like to leak the story right now but I can tell you that it shows the vast cultural difference between the rural and the urban styles of living. The story depicts a warmth in human relationships that is missing in the artificial metro culture.

INTERVIEW: ABHISHEK BACHCHAN

In defense of Abhishek Bachchan, fans say that even Amitabh had nine flops before he became a star. So logically, one should give Abhishek time. But what his supporters forget is that times then and now are quite different. Today's audience is far more unforgiving. Moreover, Amitabh didn't really play a hardcore hero in many of his initial projects (unlike Abhishek who is already flopping as the main lead.) For example, in "Reshma Aur Shera", Amitabh had a minor part.

With Hrithik Roshan stealing the limelight with his performance in Fiza, Abhishek (with two consecutive flops) is lagging far behind. One hopes for the newcomer's sake that his third and last release of 2000, Raj Kanwar's "Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke", invests his somnolent career with a fresh lease of life.

Aishwarya plays Sahiban Grewal, a Rajput daughter, and Abhishek Bachchan plays Karan, an army officer. Abhishek Bachchan is in love with Sonali Bendre (making a guest appearance.) The movie has been inspired by the Keanu Reeves' starrer 'A Walk In The Clouds.' But in a Hindi film, the heroine cannot get pregnant, and neither does Aishwarya. To avoid an arranged marriage, she lies that she is already married. All hell breaks loose in the joint family set-up. The whole family wants to know who the boy is and Abhishek Bachchan is mistaken to be the one. (By the way, didn't "Kunwara" have a similar storyline?)

A week before the release of Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Abhishek Bachchan is ready to take it all in his stride...

Q: In 'Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke' you're playing an orphan. Coincidentally, even in 'Refugee' and 'Tera Jadoo Chal Gayaa', you were an orphan! Comment.

(Laughs heartily) That's a coincidence really.

Q: Let's hear your role in "Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke"?

I play Captain Karan Khanna, an army officer. He's a Samaritan, a nice human being who feels the need to help somebody in trouble. Then he falls in love with her.

Q: Do you think that 'Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke' is an acid test for you especially since Hrithik has been well appreciated in 'Fiza'?

No. Why should it be an acid test for anybody? Every film is a test. 'Fiza' is a completely different film as compared to 'Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke'. I don't see why the comparison arises just because Hrithik is there in the film and I'm in this. Hrithik and I are not in competition with each other. The two of us have dinner in the evening and talk about the rubbish that's created between the two of us. Actually the media just wants to make something out of it, so they are going all out to compare us and make us out to be competitors. I think it's very unfair because it will end up ruining a good friendship. Here you have the new generation that would like to work together, who consult each other and work as a team in complete harmony and tandem with each other. This is in contrast to the extra-competitiveness that has come in as a 90s phenomenon. Everybody is doing their work, we do films, they release and we hope for the best. We've given it our best, which is all we can do. An actor can only give his all. He can't make it work, that's up to God and the audience.

Q: You seem to share great vibes with Aishwarya?

She's my senior but she's been wonderful and a real pleasure to work with. She's professional, talented, warm and co-operative. She's gone out of her way to help me on the sets. The bond between Raj Kanwar, Aishwarya, Ishwar Bidri and myself made a great team and helped us to give off our best. Now let's hope it works.

Q: Looking back at your debut film, 'Refugee', what do you feel about its run, response etc.?

'Refugee' wasn't like a film for me. It was more of an emotional situation. I won't be able to compare it to any other film because that was a totally different experience for me; the content, the story and everything else about it. I had nothing to do in the film, be it my performance or my costumes. J.P.Dutta orchestrated everything. I was like a wooden puppet in his hands (smiles). 'Tera Jadoo Chal Gayaa' is also very close to my heart, but I can't really compare the two. I enjoyed doing both the films profusely.

Q: After a brilliant performance in 'Refugee', the critics felt let down by you in 'Tera Jadoo Chal Gayaa'?

I disagree with that; opinions will differ. The media has every right to say what they feel, and every actor has to take it in his stride. If he thinks they are right, then he has to rectify his mistakes. If the media is feeling let down then I'll do a better job next time. I'll try to please both the media and my audience.

Q: A well-sculpted physique is of paramount importance in films these days. Are you working to acquire a body of envy as well?

I might believe in a lot of things and people may not agree with it, but I always felt that acting had to do with the face (placing his face between his palms) and how well you emote, not with the body. Trends change. In the past we've had great actors who weren't in great shape. Sanjeev Kumar is one example. I don't think my father ever had a great body. Hrithik is a great actor and has a great body, so it's like a 'sone pe suhaga' for him. But if someone thinks that acting is all about having a great body, then I don't believe in that at all. It's more important for an actor to be able to act. I used to work out, but of late, I've been so busy that there's no time to devote to my workouts. The other guys take out a lot of time and work out even in the middle of the night. I've never been able to do that, but if the audience thinks that a good body will add on to me as an actor, and then most certainly I will try to do something about it.

Q: What have you learnt after your first two films?

(A bit of thought) I learnt a lot, but the first lesson that was that there is a lot more to learn (laughs)! There's a long way to go, you've to just keep doing your work and leave everything else to the Almighty.

INTERVIEW: SUSHMITA SEN

Inevitable comparisons between Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai have been made. All right, so Aishwarya may have a better crop of banners, but when it comes to zest, attitude and style; Sushmita is just unparalleled. She answers a set of tricky questions with alarming alacrity:

Q: How does it feel to finally play the main lead instead of the other woman?

(Laughs) Finally I'm playing the woman who gets her man at the end of the film. In fact, when D.Rama Naidu called me up for 'Aaghaaz', he said I could choose between the two roles that he had to offer. He also added that I suited both of them. My first question was- who gets the man in the end? I told him I wanted to play the woman who gets her man in the end. Namrata Shirodkar is doing the other role. I'm also playing Govinda's simple wife in David Dhawan's film while there is someone else playing the other woman. Thank goodness.

Q: After these films weren't you worried that you would be only playing second leads in films?

Not really. This stuff about second lead and character artiste has never bothered me. I'm never insecure about whom I play or where I stand in the frame. Professionally my career's going the way I'd like it to. I've always wanted to do good films in which I can perform as an actress. I do admit that a lot of people I've met, associate me very closely with the character of this determined, persuasive and ambitious woman that I played in 'Biwi No.1'.

Q: Is there life beyond films for you?

At this moment this is what I'm enjoying most but I don't see myself hanging around in this business endlessly. I have set up a clothing company, 'Sushmita Sen Fashions Inc.' which already functions on a small scale. I would like to be more actively involved in it. I am a person who loves free time. I like to go abroad, like to travel a hell of a lot. I have traveled to about 33 countries and there is still half the world to see. So I keep going abroad for a holiday. I also go to meet my family and friends; I like to keep in touch with all of them.
click for larger view
Q: How does it feel being the tallest heroine in the industry?

(Laughs) I can look down on all my male co-stars. I know I can't work with fabulous actors like Aamir Khan. I'd have loved to work with him but I guess one can't have everything. I love being tall and wouldn't give that up for anything. It's a part of my personality and I can't change that. Now I'm doing a film opposite Abhishek Bachchan, so finally I don't have to worry about my height!

Q: What made you enter films?

It just seemed like the next best option once I was through with modeling. Attention was what I was seeking and although I had received much fame during the beauty pageant, obviously I was greedy for more. I had also contemplated taking up a career in journalism. I love writing and I have this habit of penning my thoughts and writing my diary daily.

Q: What's your latest high these days?

Many say that besides other actresses even I've jumped on to the special appearance bandwagon. But what's the harm? Special appearances can only push a film forward. I'm thrilled about the way in which 'Mehboob Mere' from 'Fiza' has shaped up. It's one of the best songs I've done in recent times.

WAS FOOLISH TO HAVE TURNED DOWN RAJKUMAR SANTOSHI : NAGMA

After being known as the Tamil film industry's "queen bee" for many years now, Nagma has made a comeback to Mumbai with several films recently like Chal Mere Bhai, Kunwara and Papa the Great. However, despite the fact that all these three films have flopped, Nagma remains undeterred.
In an exclusive interview, Nagma was of the view that although the number of actresses are fast increasing, the overall canvass is also expanding proportionately. This was offering opportunity to everybody so that they could prove their worth in this field.
"I am not here to compete with the Amishas or the Kareenas or the Keertis in the industry. Ten years from now, there'll be more new faces and these girls will then have to compete with them. But till then these girls will have to work very hard to survive like I have done for ten long years", quips Nagma.
Nagma is also seriously considering the option of entering television by working in serials and also hosting programmes. "If our legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna can consider that, why not me", she says, adding that "working in television is definitely more inspiring than doing trashy south Indian films". Nagma thinks that it is futile to sit at home and twiddle one's thumbs when the option of doing intelligent programming for television is available to all.
"Box-office success of films like Kya Kehna that have women as the pivotal characters have thrown up many opportunities for new producers to make films on the same lines. It is being fast realised that such themes are now acceptable to the social fabric in India", says Nagma. According to her, she has been offered to play the lead heroine in many such films, but she has resisted the temptation since either the storylines have not been good or the directors have not been of her choice.
Nagma confesses that one of the biggest blunders that she made in recent times was her refusal to Rajkumar Santoshi to do a special dance number in his star-studded film Lajjaa. "I had thought that I would go unnoticed in a film which had Madhuri Dixit, Manisha Koirala, Rekha, Mahima Chaudhury and Aishwarya. I was sceptical of being just one more face in the crowd. However, now since Sonali Bendre has accepted the offer which I had turned down, I regret having said no to Rajkumarji. I have made a mistake and I will learn from it".

INTERVIEW WITH MAHIMA CHAUDHURY

Mahima, who made a debut under one of the top banners in Bollywood - Subhash Ghai's Pardes, has now been shunted to oblivion. She has earned herself the reputation of being "too choosy", discarding most roles offered to her and signing very few movies. She took the industry by surprise when she refused Boney Kapoor's film Hamaara Dil Aapke Paas Hai on the pretext that she was being asked to strip in scenes where it was not required. Few will forget that she had refused the role in Satya, made by Ramgopal Varma, which brought many laurels for both Manoj Bajpai and Urmila Matondkar. It is for this reason that the industry feels that she herself is responsible for the position that she has driven herself to during the past one year.

In a special interview with Rangbhumi, Mahima asserts that she will never be the one to vouch for "insignificant, shallow roles" at the cost of her reputation.

Q: Despite plenty of offers, you have not signed up for many films. Why is that so ?

A: I have resisted many offers because I think that they are not up to the mark. I do not believe in doing public relations for securing roles and I do them only if I consider them appropriate.

Q: Is it true that you refused the role offered to you by Boney Kapoor in Hamaara Dil Aapke Paas Hia because you were asked to play second lead whereas Aishwarya was asked to play the lead?

A: That's not right. I refused the role because of I was asked to come in outfits that do not suit the image of a "Hindustani woman" that I wish to build for myself. You will recall that I have second leads before as in Dhadkan, Dil Kya Kare etc. My problem was not that I was asked to play the second lead, but that the roles of the lead actress and the second lead actress must be given equal weightage. For instance in Dil Kya Kare, Kajol and I were both holding substantial roles in the film. I even won the Best Newcomer Award for the film.

Q: Why did You refuse Satya?

A: I refused Satya the first time that I heard the storyline because it was a hero's film, there was no scope for an actress in the film.

Q: Is it true that you refused the film more because Ramgopal Varma was not offfering you enough money to do the film?

A: That's true that he was offering me very little money to do the film. However, as I have said before that there was no scope for an actress in the film, so hypothetically speaking even if he had offered me more money to do the film, I would have refused.

Q: In Lajja, you have condescended to work with half a dozen other actresses. So, what is the criterion for having taken on the film?

A: I am no fool. Agreed, that the role in Lajja is short, but it has depth and character. Despite the multiplicity of actresses in the film, I think I will stand out.

Tanisha to turn another Kajol

Daughter of Tanuja and sister of Kajol, Tanisha Mukherjee will be soon noticed in several movies like 'Sarkar' and 'Tango Charlie' though her earlier movie 'Ssshhhh?..' and 'Pop Korn Khao Mast Ho Jao' have fallen flat at the ticket window. You may recall that this had happened with Kajol too when she began acting. Kajol's initial movies had not fared well but soon she climbed up to the top and become number one actress. Tanisha has also signed movies with famous producers and top stars. She expects to follow in the footsteps of her elder sis.

Amisha marrying Vikram?

During the shooting of Mohan Kumar's 'Aap Mujhe Achhe Lagne Lage' actress Amisha Patel and director Vikram Bhatt had developed an affair. Since then this has been in the frontline of the media. In fact, a section of the media published the news of their marriage though both of them denied it. But industry circles are expecting their marriage any time now. When an English magazine published the news of their marriage in its front page with their photograph, the producers and the directors who have already signed Amisha for their films became panicky. The talk of an affair between Amisha and Vikram Bhatt has already caused a rift between Vikram and his wife. Besides, this has also been a matter of a quarrel between Amisha and her parents.

Shahid gets offer from South

Though Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor starrer 'Fida' could not prove to be a hit at the box office, there is no lack of work for both of them. Kareena and Shahid have been signed together for four films. Shahid has also an offer from South apart from more than six Bollywood films. Recently, a famous producer of South has signed Shahid in the lead role for his film. This producer is, however, looking for a new face for a heroine opposite Shahid, as he doesn't want to sign Kareena in his film. This film is a remake of a Telugu film named 'Arya'. Satish Kaushik will direct this film.

FLOPS DON'T WORRY KAREENA

None of Kareena's recent releases has proved a hit at the box office. Still the directors as well as the producers are lined up to sign her for their films. Now, Kareena is taking two and half a crore of rupees to sign a film. Despite this all the producers are ready to take her in their films. Kareena's films might have not done so well but she has improved her acting a lot in the recent past. When she signed the role of a prostitute in 'Chameli' most of the industry people expressed doubts about her ability to perform this role. But after watching her in the film they turned her admirers.

Then she decided to perform only meaningful roles. Shahid Kapoor and Kareena starrer 'Fida' was not successful at the box office. However, she deals with it lightly and says, "I was the only heroine in this film and I was expecting that the audience would enjoy it. The role was quite different from my other films. If the audience did not like it then I am not worried about it." Also Kareena's recent release on Diwali and Eid festivals 'Aitraaz' has done an average business. In this film she has performed a strong role of a lawyer. She will soon appear in Dharmesh Darshan's 'Bewafa', Priyadarshan's 'Hulchul' and Satish Kaushik's 'Milenge Milenge'. The industry is keeping a watch on her performance in these films.

ESHA DEMANDS HUGE FEE, LOSES OFFERS

Esha Deol, the daughter of stars-turned-politicians - Dharmendra and Hema Malini - has lost a few good film offers following her demand for high fees. First of all, she declined Rajiv Rai's 'Assambhav'. Then she quit Boney Kapoor's 'No Entry' as she was offered much less than what she demanded. Third, she missed Ram Gopal Varma's 'Vaastu Shashtra'. All these good films would have added to her status in the industry. But, she lost them, as she considered herself to be the dream girl like her mother. She cannot get this status only by virtue of being the daughter of dream girl Hema Malini.

She is aware that she got Mani Ratnam's 'Yuva' because of Hema Malini's influence. But Esha thought no end of herself. She was shocked when this movie fell flat at the ticket window. RGV has been a fan of Hema Malini and had signed on Esha for a nice role in his 'Vaastu Shastra'. But she declined it. Anyway this is a loss for Esha though Hema says that Esha had to quit this movie because of dates problem and not for any other reason. Ramu would not have given him what Esha had started demanding from the producers.

Manisha in Kamal's 'Mumbai Express'

Kamal Haasan is making a movie with Nepalese beauty Manisha Koirala. The movie is called 'Mumbai Express'. While Kamal Haasan plays a cop, Manisha Koirala is his leading female star. Kamal says he finally decided on Manisha though he considered several others, including sexy Bipasha and arty Tabu for his movie. He was asked how come he did not take Kajol and preferred Manisha to her. Kamal quipped, yes, we considered Kajol, and she too responded to our request. However, we settled on Manisha because of date problem with Kajol, who has to fulfill her duty towards her daughter. Now, only Manisha is there, he added.

Govind follows Laloo

Actor-turned-politician Govinda has found political godfather in Indian's present railway minister Laloo Prasad Yadav. You may recall that Laloo Yadav has kept a stable for a number of cows and buffalos at his residential bungalow. Similarly, Govinda has opened the vacant land near his bungalow to cows and buffalos. He has done this after the Mumbai Municipal Corporation declared his bungalow legal. Earlier, the Mumbai municipal body had declared his Mud island bungalow as illegal. Why should Govinda not follow in the footsteps of Laloo Yadav? After all Laloo has full control over his state of Bihar and Govinda wants to have a powerful status too in his state of Maharasthra.

Who's Saif's lovelady?

Yes, it is Rosa, who has distanced Amrita Singh from her actor husband Saif Ali Khan during the past few months. He introduced his new love to the crew of his latest film 'Parinita' on the sets of the movie in Kolkata. Frankly speaking, Rosa was visiting the film sets daily with Saif, and meeting with everyone there. They were seen shaking their legs together in discos of Kolkata too, whenever free from work. Though a foreigner, Rosa looks simply desi in the Indian dress.

SRK SAYS ' KUCHH MEETHA HO JAYE' TO MAHIMA

Mahima Choudhry is at present shooting in Samar Khan's 'Kuchh Meetha Ho Jai' in Malaysia. Samar Khan has been a famous director of the small screen. But he has recently shifted to the big screen. He has borrowed the movie idea from famous director Steven Spillberg's English movie 'The Terminal'. Since he wants to release this movie early next year, he has not only signed on Arshad Warsi and Mahima Choudhry as the lead pair, but also booked their bulk dates for 40 days in advance so that the movie is completed on time. Presumably, Samar has signed Arshad after the latter's excellent performance in 'Munna Bahi MBBS'.

Sandhya Mridul is also playing an important role in the movie. Interestingly, Samar has roped in Shah Rukh Khan to act in guest's role. This will certainly enhance the prestige of this movie in the film industry. SRK is supposed to shoot some scenes with Mahima Choudhry. This is to recall that the SRK and Mahima pair was last seen in showman Subhash Ghai's super hit movie 'Pardes'.
