NO COMPROMISE ON HARD WORK, SAYS RAMPAL

Does anyone know what is the reason why model-turned-actor Arjun Rampal remains one of the favourites among directors despite having clocked a series of flops. Quite right if you have guessed that Rampal is amongst the few in Bollywood who knows his priorities and keeps by them. Arjun got his first break in Rajiv Roy's 'Pyar Ishq Mohabbat'. In this film Arjun Rampal proved that not only does he have the potential to become the superstar of the future, but also he is a virtuous man by all standards.

Films like 'Dil Hai Tumhara', 'Dard ka Rishta', 'Tehzeeb' did not do good business but Arjun's role was well appreciated. Arjun has not yet been able to make a substantial mark in terms of commercial success of his films, but nevertheless he enjoys an image of being responsible towards his commitments. He says that he does not want to be confined to any particular image.

"I cannot tolerate anyone saying that I am imitating someone and I think originality is the only element for success in the industry." His film 'Asambhav' also proved to be a dampener but the going seems good with Rampal moving around with a clutch of good number of films in his hand. A number of films like 'Yakeen', 'Wada', 'Elaan', and 'Dil Sachha Aur Chehara Jhuta' are in Arjun's hands. All these films belong to big banners and are big-budget films. We can only hope that Arjun will be able to make it to the frontline of stardom very soon.

SRK PROVES HE IS KING KHAN

With 'Veer Zaara', Shahrukh Khan is already at the top of the box-office and he has proven once again that he is the king khan. And this Shah has been busy lately. He has been in the news for two very different reasons.

The first being that he was presented on Children's day the 'Chhoton Ka Funda' award. But this award function had no fanfare attached to it. It was given in Mumbai's Mukesh Mills in Colaba, where Shahrukh Khan was shooting for a commercial. These children were allowed to ask whatever they wanted from the actor, but some of them were scared. But one of their questions was to describe him in three words and his answer to that was "I am ok."

But apart from the question-answer session the actor urged the kids to study hard. And for a change he snubbed his cigarette before these kids came. This award was started last year, and the first recipient was Hrithik Roshan. So Shahrukh khan certainly has a feather in his cap knowing that even children adore him and that he can reach out to people from the age 5 to 50 years.

Another reason why he is in news is that there has been a theft in his house in Bandra. Though a heavily guarded residence, the thieves took jewelry worth four lakh rupees and 60,000 in cash. The police is suspecting an insider as there's heavy security in the star's house. And apparently the money didn't belong to Shahrukh, it was of some of his relatives who had come to town for a while. A setback for him, but we are sure there will be more security measures from now on.

Whether it is thieves or children, its clear that everyone loves Shahrukh.Hopefully his magic will as always work this time as well.

BIG B IN BIG TROUBLE

One after another problem is facing the super star of Bollywood. Recently, the Big B was asked by the ministry of information and broadcasting to reimburse to the government all dues amounting to several crores he owed to it in the past. However, the previous government headed by Vajpayee had allowed him to do it in kind by anchoring some of the ministry's social commercials. The new UPA government led by the Congress party has now demanded him to pay in cash. This is despite the long cordial relationship between the Bachchan and the Gandhi families. At one time, Amitabh fought election to Parliament on behalf of the Congress Party.

Informed sources say that the relations between the two families deteriorated after the debacle of the Congress in 1977 when Teji ,the mother of Amitabh Bachchan, sought to distance her family from the Gandhis to escape attacks by the then ruling party against Mrs Indira Gandhi and her henchmen for committing excesses during the Emergency. Amitabh was passing through a bad phase of his career and his parents were not prepared to take any risk about their son's filmi career. This enraged the Gandhis, and they decided to distance themselves from the Bachchans.

Later, the Gandhis never invited Bachchans to their family functions. This was a shock for the Bachchans as they had been very close to the Nehru-Gandhi family for a long period. Nehruji had asked him to leave his lecturer's job and join external affairs ministry so that a family friend is available to join him over the morning cup of tea. Harivansh Rai Bachchan stated this to us. Even after Nehru's death, Indira Gandhi and Teji Bachchan were very friendly and used to visit each other.

The movie industry has been taken aback with the latest government move. It is said that the recent close relationship between the Bachchans and the Samajwadi Party headed by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh is behind this. Moreover, Rahul Gandhi has been launching a campaign against the Mulayam Singh government, and has not spared even the Bachchan family. Another ugly incident occurred a couple of days ago near Pune where 70-odd farmers led by labor leader Baba Adhav shouted full-throated cries of Amitabh Bachchan chale jao!

The farmers - displaced by the 1972 construction of the Pavana dam and yet to be rehabilitated - also took token 'possession' of the property by stringing up a 'Maharashtra State Dam & Project-Affected Parishad' banner across the gates of the Bachchan's property (registered under son Abhishek's name). Adhav said approximately 1,200-1,800 acre was surplus after the catchments area was affixed following the dam's construction, which should have rightfully been returned to the original owners. He said that the government resolution during the acquisition had clearly stated that surplus land, after the dam construction, should be returned to the owners. ''But it never happened,'' he added. The protest march, which got under way at Pavana Nagar , proceeded on a 11-kilometre trek to the undeveloped Bachchan property near Lonavala. The protestors - mostly elderly men and women - wound their way up the beautifully landscaped estates along the banks of the Pavana dam reservoir bearing 'Private Property' signboards.

AMITABH BACHCHAN VISITS TSUNAMI AFFECTED AREAS

Indian acting legend Amitabh Bachchan met children orphaned by tsunami in India's western Mumbai city. The group of children belong to the Andaman and Nicobar islands where thousands were killed in the world's worst tsunami ever in December last year. Multiple encounter, an international relief team had brought the group of girls on tour to Mumbai. The veteran actor said he was glad to make the children happy. "I was very glad to meet them and I hope that by my meeting them we had been able to bring some kind of happiness or joy in their lives because that's the aim of this group," he said. The UNICEF estimates that tsunami killed at least 50,000 kids. In some of the worst hit areas, at least three of every four children died, wiping out virtually an entire generation.

Interview: SONALI BENDRE

Sonali Bendre may not be in the top league of leading ladies in Bollywood right now, but she is popular and still very much in demand-- a remarkable feat, considering the spate of new girls entering the industry regularly.

Q: Is your career on an upswing?

Of course, there is a sense of achievement but I still feel like a small-town girl who has made it in the big city. To be honest, achieving fame and money is no cakewalk. It's been tough, but I survived. I'd rather remember the beautiful moments despite occasional failures.

Q: Were there times when you felt like giving it all up?

Of course, there have been trying times. Sometimes I did feel like quitting. But I stuck. I am no loser. I always told myself that since my destiny had brought me to films, it meant that I was here to do something. Walking away would have meant accepting defeat.

Q: How did initial success change you?

I am still the same person. But yes, the attitude of those around me has changed. Suddenly, I am being noticed. I don't know whether it's respect or awareness. From being nowhere, I am being slotted as a big heroine.

Q: According to Mahima Chaudhary, she opted out of 'Humara Dil Aapke Paas Hai' because the role wasn't great. You are playing second fiddle to Aishwarya Rai. What made you accept it?

When I heard the role, I felt that it had everything for me as an actress. Maybe our requirements are different. The general feeling is that there is going to be a tussle between Ash and me, but I disagree. I am not playing second fiddle to anyone in the film.

Q: What made you accept such a bimbette-ish role in 'Sarfarosh'?

Excuse me; I wasn't a bimbette in the film. Agreed my role wasn't great but without me 'Sarfarosh' would have been a documentary!

Q: How important is it to be in love?

It is very important. It is very natural to fall in love and have a relationship. When you are in love you should just enjoy the feeling, instead of analyzing it or becoming clinical about it. I have been in love and I enjoyed the phase. But I did not enjoy the heartbreak that followed.

Q: You have had your share of link-ups. Have such rumours ever affected your relationship with the heroes concerned?

It has affected my relationship once and it has taught me a lesson. After that whenever there has been a link-up with a hero, I have made it a point to tell the person concerned, "Look buddy we both have to deal with these rumours." Once that is clear then I just chill out.

Q: You've had torrid affairs with Sunil Shetty, Ajay Devgan and the likes. Comment?

I don't wish to clarify these rumours. I have repeated time and again that both Sunil and Ajay have been great friends and even guided and supported me when I needed them. If people want to see more than what meets the eye, what can I say?

Q: What do you think has been your greatest achievement so far?

My family is settled. Earlier, my priority was money. Now my goals and ambitions are different. Right now, my only aim is to make a name for myself through good work.

Q: How have you changed in the last two years?

I am scared of getting emotionally attached to people, be it my staff or my colleagues. My definition of friendship is very different. Friendship to me means unconditional love. I would do anything for a friend. I would rather be more careful about whom I call a friend than change my definition of friendship.

Q: Any regrets?

I have made some mistakes. Yes, I have also shed a lot of tears. There are a few more walls around me as a result. But, I view everything in a positive way; I have taken them as a learning experience of life.

Q: What's the corniest rumour you have heard about yourself?

A stupid rumour linked me with Mahesh Bhupathi and I don't even know the man.

INTERVIEW: SHILPA SHETTY

It's a do or die situation for Shilpa Shetty. She has pinned all her hopes on Dhadkan and if this Dharmesh Darshan film does not work wonders for her career, nothing will. An eve-of-release t괥-୴괥 with the sexy star...

Q: Tell us about your role in 'Dhadkan'?

It's a film about relationships and every character plays a significant role to play in carrying the story forward. Perhaps that's the reason every member of the cast has come up with a performance that's sure to stand out. No doubt 'Dhadkan' is a very special film for me. I was lucky to get the opportunity to work with a talented director like Dharmesh Darshan. I grabbed it and made the best of it (Laughs).

Q. Is it true that you're banking heavily on 'Dhadkan'?

An artiste banks heavily on every release. After all, your market changes Friday-to-Friday!

Q. Are you honestly doing anything concrete beyond the regular song and dance routine in 'Dhadkan'?

Of course. That's such a rude thing to say. I agree that I have a glamorous image that often supercedes the actor in me but that doesn't mean that I haven't been performing all this while. Dharmeshji did not make a conscious effort to make me look less glamorous, but he worked mighty hard on portraying me more as an acting actress rather than a glamorous one. The heroine of 'Dhadkan' is stylish and modern. But Anjali is also a girl with great depth; you want to know her better.

Q. Of late, you've been doing special appearance numbers in Tarkieb' and 'Shool'. Is it a ploy to remain in circulation?

What nonsense! What's wrong in doing a special appearance number? And I can afford to do them because unlike other actresses I've never really done item songs before. Whatever you may say, my songs in 'Tarkieb' and 'Shool' became big hits. They did a whole lot of good for me.

Q. Are you insecure about Mahima Chaudhary's addition to 'Dhadkan'?

Why should I be insecure of Mahima or anyone? My role has shaped up really well and I'm happy with it. In 'Dhadkan', mercifully, people will see more to me than just a mere dancer! In fact, I have little or no dancing in 'Dhadkan'. For a change, Mahima's done the dancing bit and that's a welcome change!

Q. Isn't 'Dhadkan' yet another love triangle?

(Warily) Well, yes. Usually in a Hindi film the heroine isn't supposed to get involved in a relationship before marriage and if she does it's usually treated as a dark secret and never alluded to directly. What's nice about Hindi films is that they are always trying to uphold Indian values and tradition, but what's nicer is when a film like 'Dhadkan' comes along and has no qualms in projecting a heroine who had loved a man and married another. Anjali has a past. She accepts it and carries on with her life. I'm in love with Sunil and get married to Akshay.

Q. Didn't you have a tiff with Dharmesh Darshan on the sets?

Oh God, it was something so minor. Nothing that deserves magnification. At the end of the day, Dharmeshji is responsible for Shilpa Shetty's metamorphosis.

Q. Rumouredly, you've signed 'Dostana' opposite Sanjay Dutt. True?

Yes. Sanjay Gupta, after 'Jung', has repeated me for 'Dostana'. I didn't speak about it; so I'm surprised how you got to know.

Q. Hasn't he repeated you because you supported him during the 'Jung' controversy while Jackie and Raveena upset him?

Excuse me; he signed me because I was probably apt for the role. I don't suck up to producers and directors and neither are they stupid enough to sign artistes merely because the stars pamper their egos.

INTERVIEW: MAHIMA CHAUDHARY

Mahima Chaudhary had two releases Dhadkan and Deewane in the same week. The practical Virgo star is happy about her performances and waiting for more doors to open up...

Q. Did you like yourself in 'Pardes'?

A. Sometimes I want to switch off the video when I'm watching myself. It's embarrassing. I could have done some scenes so much better.

Q. Why did you do a guest appearance in 'Dhadkan' and 'Deewane'?

A. Good banners, good cast, good directors. Life is all about making the most of a good opportunity. Who knows, even a small role in a big set-up can open up more doors for you! Right?

Q. In Raj Santoshi's 'Lajja', you're pitted against the likes of Rekha, Madhuri, Manisha. Nervous?

A. I have to prove myself all right because all of them are wonderful actresses. But I don't understand this business of stealing the show. People came and told me that I stole the show from Kajol in 'Dil Kya Kare'. What nonsense! Kajol was phenomenal. You can't compare us. I didn't think I'd get so many compliments for DKK. It was a pleasure to work with Ajay, Kajol & Prakash Jha.

Q. Your role in Mahesh Manjrekar's "KURUKSHETRA"?

A. Sanjay Dutt is an ACP and I play his wife. My role is simple and casual. Mahesh has interpreted it well. The film revolves around how we always blame the police for any mishap not understanding that they work under severe pressure.

Q. People say you're not diplomatic. True?

A. True. I can't beat around the bush. I call a spade a spade. Several industry folk are of the opinion that my Subhash Ghai episode was handled a bit roughly. Any other actress, probably, would have been more discreet.

Q. What is it that you dislike being asked about in an interview?

A. Old issues that are repeatedly raked up and about which I've already spoken about a million times.

Q. Do you dislike people on the sets?

A. Actually, I do. It breaks my concentration. So I don't blame directors who debar guests from visiting the sets or those who ask visitors to switch off their cell phones.

Q. What is it that you like about yourself?

A. I'm extremely hygienic, organized and a thorough perfectionist. That comes with being a Virgo.

Q. What do you do in between shots?

A. Read a lot of books or just go off to sleep in my van!

Q. Who are your favourite authors?

A. Jhumpa Lahiri & J G Coetzee.

Q. Who is your best friend in the industry?

A. Oh, I love Apurva Agnihotri. He's such a gem. He's one of my best friends. I did 'Pardes' and 'Pyar Koi Khel Nahin' with him. He's one nice, warm and caring co-star I've worked with. I'd like to work with him again.

Q. Which cars do you possess?

A. Honda City and Opel Astra.

Q. Is it true that you drive yourself to your shoots?

A. Hey, how did you know that? Yeah, I love driving. One of my cars has automatic gears. So when I'm driving in to town I use that. Otherwise I like using the one with gears. It gives you the joy of driving!!!!!

AMRITA AGAIN WITH SHAHID

After her successful performance in 'Ishq Vishq' with Shahid Kapoor, Amrita Rao is again going to appear opposite Shahid in a new film of 'Sarfros' fame director John Mathew Mathan. This film has not been named yet. Ajay Devgan and Bipasa Basu are also playing important roles in this film. Amrita Rao has already acted in five films. And 'Ishq Vishq', 'Masti' and 'Main Hoon Na' proved successful.

Amrita Rao had started her career in the film 'Ab Ki Baras' with Raj Babbar's son Aryan Babbar. But this film could not do good business in the box office. After this film Amrita Rao had not lost her hope and luckily her three films became successful. Her acting in the three successful movies in one row brought her the tag of a lucky girl. During this time Amrita had got a lot of offers for new films but did not sign a single one. She viewed that she wants to work in some selected films only.

Amrita had great expectation from 'Deewar', and waited for the result before signing new films. But unfortunately 'Deewar' did not succeed. Amrita was the only heroine in this film with the great actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Akshaya Khanna. Some directors were also ready to take Amrita in their films but 'Deewar's result changed the entire scenario for her. She is back with Shahid Kapoor again in an untitled movie after 'Ishq Vishq' which had been a hit.

Tabu replaces Madhuri

UTV has signed 'Chandani Bar' girl Tabbu known for her roles in art cinema. She has replaced dhak dhak girl Madhuri Dixit in UTV's yet untitled film. Big B is also playing a lead role. According to our reports, though UTV has replaced Madhuri Dixit with Tabbu but Big B continues in the movie. UTV sources indicate that it had signed Madhuri Dixit for this movie on reports of her comeback to the Hindi cinema after her marriage and later birth of a baby. This goes without saying that like other directors and producers UTV also ran after Madhuri in the hope that it would be the first to rope her in its movies. However, her non-cooperation has dashed its hopes.

SCOOP INTERVIEW: VIKRAM BHATT EXPOSES ANIL KAPOOR!

'Fareb' was a hit but Vikram really struck gold with 'Ghulam'. He's proved that personal frustrations need not come in the way of a rich and rewarding professional life. Ironical though it may sound, the 'zero' phase was also the most turbulent phase in his personal life. But the workaholic that he is, Vikram strove hard to give a runaway hit. The film also saw the birth of a new star in Bollywood- Rani Mukherjee. Today Vikram has braved the storm and is at peace with himself and life. A talented and confident director, he is working on three films today. Over to the Bhatt:

Q. Recently you caused a furor by replacing Anil Kapoor with a newcomer like Aftaab Shivdasani in 'Tumko Meri Kasam'? Considering Aftaab is not commercially viable, was that a wise decision on your part?

See, Anil had been finalized for the role almost a year and a half back. He was also paid the signing amount; he was given the complete script and the dates were confirmed. We waited for him in Switzerland for the shoot but he did not report for the shoot. So Mahesh Bhatt asked us to take this drastic action. He did not want the producer Mukesh Bhatt and me to compromise on our respect and self-esteem. Anyway, the Bhatt camp is trying to do away with this star system that is prevalent in the film industry.

Q. One of the reasons for 'Tumhare Liye' being shelved was Govinda canceling some shooting schedules. Is it that Govinda and you never plan to work together?

It's a rumour. I can't blame Govinda for canceling schedules. There was a communication gap between actors, producers and me. Unfortunately for all of us, the gap widened and we could not relate to each other and the producer decided to shelve the project before he put all his money. Some films are pre-ordained to not happen. This was one of them. Whatever misunderstandings that could have cropped up between Govinda and me have been sorted out. In fact, there are talks of us doing a film together. Govinda is a great actor and he also feels that we should do a film together.

Q. 'Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai' is a hit but no one has repeated the hit pair in another film, as is generally the practice. Don't you feel insecure about casting Amisha, considering she hasn't received any praise?

I signed Hrithik and Amisha a few months before the release of 'KNPH'. Hrithik showed me the rush prints of his film and I thought he was awesome. He's really a good actor. The pair suited my script perfectly. I don't know why they are not being signed together and I see no reason for being scared or insecure about something I don't know (laughs). By this you are also implying that some other actress is a safer bet than Amisha. I don't agree with that at all! Here people like to write obituaries. Hrithik's debut has been too sensational, I'm not saying this just from the point of view of a director, but also as a layman, so Amisha being overshadowed in 'KNPH' was inevitable. 'KNPH' was Amisha's first real exposure to films. Let's give her a fair chance.

Q. Did the success of the music of 'Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai' prompt you to replace Anu Malik with Rajesh Roshan?

If that is logical then I should be replaced by another director (smiles). Anu and I could not see eye to eye over the kind of time he could give for the film. So we decided to part ways in a very amicable way. We are doing another film together but a little later.

Q. How do you interact with Mukesh Bhatt considering Pooja Bhatt has fallen out with him? After all, Pooja and you are also close friends?

Pooja falling out with Mukesh is a matter between them; I'm in no position to comment. How I feel towards them and interact with each of them has not changed. None of them have made any selfish or stupid demands on me. I completed Pooja's 'Dhund'. I'll always be there for Pooja when she needs me and I'm still very much with Mukesh.

Q. Sushmita Sen and you do not indulge in mud slinging in print at each other any more?

We've never said anything about each other in print. There's always been peace between us. Even if there's no relationship now, the mutual respect will always remain intact.

Anil Kapoor

MANOJ BAJPAI ON THE FIVE PEOPLE HE LOVES TO HATE

1. JACKIE SHROFF
"Jackie is such a handsome man. Even at this age, he's maintained himself really well. He's very down-to-earth and charming. I met him at the Satya party recently, and in my first meeting itself, we became buddies. He's so bloody charismatic. He has no airs. From the waiter to a top brass guest, he was at ease with all. No wonder everyone flocks around Jaggu. He is perhaps the only actor whom people adore for his approachability and genuineness. Unfortunately, most of the other stars think that it's cool to maintain their distance from the public. So even while critics may decry him for appearing in Mithun-starrers, the self-made man will always enjoy respect for his talent and goodwill. I envy his presence."

2. NASEERUDIN SHAH
"This man has made it difficult for me to live. I find it close to impossible to even match his craft. He is perhaps the most complete actor Indian cinema has ever produced. Here I'm trying to work on my roles and do vigorous homework everyday, and here he is growing by the day. I idolize him, emulate him. He is a man whom I look upto for his class, erudity and talent. I hope he quits acting, so people will give me another look. He's made my life miserable!"

3. BILL CLINTON
" Give me a gun and I'll shoot him today. I envy him for just that one thing he's got - power. No, not that Viagra kind of power! He controls the United States of America, the world's biggest super-power. Secondly, even at this age, he's got loads of sexual vigour! I wish I had a height like his and looked even one-fourth as handsome as him; he's lucky he got Monica. But honestly, it's not Monica who enchants me. I could kill him for having a beautiful daughter like Chelsea."

4. CINDY CRAWFORD
"I don't know why, but I feel extremely possessive about Cindy. She's one of the most beautiful women in the world. A great height, superb figure, cool looks, and so popular! I'd die to have all of that, but if I can't, I don't mind settling for her! I'm obsessed with her, the Arbaaz Khan and Shah Rukh Khan kind in Daraar and Darr. I feel jealous of all the men who've met her and know her. I could kill her for even talking to another man. Most of all, her ex-husband, Richard Gere. He's such a fool! How could he leave someone like Cindy? Such a loss! Anyway, that's good for me. It makes my chances better!"

5. BOBBY DEOL
" Bobby's got cool Grecian looks, but that's not why I want to gun him down. That man is bloody lucky to have worked with someone as gorgeous as Neha in Kareeb. Neha's a doll, she's one of the prettiest girls in our industry. And Bobby actually lived and worked with her in Himachal while shooting for Kareeb. He is so lucky; he doesn't know what he's got! I hope Vidhu would make another film with Neha and sign me as the hero. I assure him of a hundred-and-ten-percent of myself. Hey Bobby, get ready! I'm coming with a blunderbuss!"

Aish: A challenge for Hollywood heroines

The former Miss World Aishwarya Rai has become a threat to the international supermodels. Her acting in more than six Hollywood films has put her at the top of international repute. She is posing a challenge to Hollywood heroines in the field of international modeling. According to sources close to her, she has recently signed a contract for a huge sum for the popular cosmetics company La Oreal which is a sister concern of Lan Com. It is said that this contract would open the way for a contract with the parent company Lan Com. The International super model Lizy Jaiger has remained as the permanent model for Lan Com. But it seems that very soon Aish may be able to take Lizy Jaiger's place.

Lara's drizzling sizzlers

It may not be a platform for an everlasting success in the movie world but the slippery track of boldness and exposure has certainly allured many an easy going new comer who want to achieve success overnight. Now, Lara Dutta is following the same track after failing to make a mark in acting. After giving a sizzling rain song with Vivek Oberoi in almost all of her films she appears in a drizzling song sequence or a swimming pool shot. In her next film 'Sipahee' she is going to thrill the audience with one more drizzling song with Akshay Kumar, Tushar Kapoor and Isha Deol. About the shoot of a drizzling rain song Lara says, " I am now mostly giving rain song sequences. I feel that I have become a typical heroine." But it is to be seen how far her typical drizzling song sequences lead the audience in the romantic mood.

Now Shahid with Soha

Though 'Fida' did not fetch good business but the film industry got one more attractive romantic pair out of the gennext artistes as Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. This pair attracted the audience well in 'Fida' and the people in the film industry felt that they have developed the best chemistry, the industry has ever seen yet. This chemistry has also spread into their real life from the silver screen and they have become very good friends today. But there may be a little disappointment for Kareena Kapoor that Shahid is going to develop a new chemistry with Soha Ali, the daughter of all-time great actress Sharmila Tagore. Shahid is acting against Soha in a film, which is being termed as the Madhuri's comeback film. In this multistarrer film Amitabh Bachchan and 'Munna Bhai M. B.B. S.' fame Boman Irani is doing important roles.

PREITY, NUSLI WADIA VISIT VAISNODEVI

Preity Zinta is talk of the tinsel town these days for various reasons .The first and foremost is that Ness Wadia, scion of the Bombay Dyeing group, and Preity Zinta, the spunky Bollywood beauty, will soon enter into wedlock. This is evident from the fact that Ness and Zinta visited the Vaishnodevi shrine in Jammu last month along with Zinta's mother.

Isn't this a prelude to the formal announcement of matrimony? Anyway, this is going to be an exemplary marriage inasmuch as Jinnah's grandson Ness belongs to all almost all religions, including Parsis, Muslims, Catholics and Protestants, and would marry Preity Zinta, a Hindu girl! Ness though a Parsi, sat through the aarti, at the shrine, to the comfort of Zinta's mother. Interestingly, Nusli is the son of Neville Wadia, heir to an old shipping and textile fortune, who married Dina, Mohammed Ali Jinnah's only daughter. Rati, Dina's mother was from an equally aristocratic family that broke off ties with her after her marriage.

Ness's mother Maureen is the glamorous head of Gladrags. Preity has been in the news also for her name figuring in the alleged tape-recording of the conversation between Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Then, no sooner than the unprecedented rains flooded Mumbai and created a havoc, she accompanied Shah Rukh Khan, in a city sweeping and cleaning mission, with a broom in their hands. On top of all this, she is being mentioned in regard to her forthcoming movie 'Salaam Namaste' opposite Saif Ali Khan. During a recent chat with the media, she spoke about her 'Salaam Namaste'.

What' s all about 'Salaam Namaste'?

This is a current age's movie. This belongs to the present generation that wants to live its way.

Who play the pivotal roles in it?

The movie centers around two such characters. I play Ambar and Saif Ali that of Nick. I am a radio Jackie and Saifa becomes a chef. Both of us arrive in Australia from India.

What's your relationship with Saif in the movie?

We have a living relationship between us. This means we live together even without marrying with each other.

What's the genre of the movie?

It's both a real as well as an entertainer. This is full of humor, fun and emotions.

What else?

I cannot divulge more about it. I don't want to disclose the whole story.

Who has directed it?

Siddarth has directed it, and he belongs to the present generation. Besides, he knows his job very well.

What's your view about Saif's acting?

This is my fourth movie with Saif. He was the hero of my first movie that was released before 'Dil Se'. However, I had begun shooting of 'Kya Kahna' before it. Later, we acted together in 'Dil Chahta Hai' and ' Kal Ho Na Ho'. I have always found a good actor in Saif. Every actor has a good time in his professional life when everyone admires his or her performance. We can say that Saif has been having a good time at present. He has acted very well in all of his movies but one gets recognition from one film though the actor works hard in each movie.

What's your opinion about hits or flop movies?

This process continues. We work hard in every movie. A movie becomes hit if the viewers approve of it. If they don't approve of it, it is called a flop. While both good acting and job satisfaction are important for the success of a movie, the final thing is the viewers' approval.

What's your view of the media?

The media is growing very fast. However, there is a lack of commensurate growth of intelligent and well-versed persons. I regret that some of them don't know my exact date of birth. And, some of them spread rumors about me. They link any star with any story. Then we are asked to clarify our position. Sometimes there is a trial by the media. Some journalists write on the basis of hearsay. This needs to stop somewhere.

ITALIAN REPLACES PREITY TO PLAY SONIA

NRI filmmaker Jagmohan Mundhra is making a movie though not a period one in that sense but on the life of Sonia Gandhi, the President of the Congress Party, who abandoned Indian Prime Minister's throne in favor of her representative Dr Manmohan Singh in 2004. Yes, Sonia is of the Italian origin who married with late Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India. Mundhra is basing the movie on the biography of Sonia Gandhi written by Rasheed Kidwai, as a part of a British government's program "Bollywood Initiative".

Earlier, Preity Zinta was sounded to play Sonia. However, the filmmaker found it better to sign Italian actress Monica Bellucci to act, as Sonia so that the latter's life and surroundings look like real. Sonia's life from 1960 to 2004 is likely to be depicted in the movie. Since Amitabh Bachchan and his family was very close to the Gandhi family, Mundhra thought of casting Big B in it too. But, Amitabh being too old to be cast opposite Monica Bellucci, Mundhra might now rope in Amitabh's son Abhishek who is quite young and thus perfect for the role.

'DRAUPADI'S CHOICE FALLS ON SUSHMITA

At last, a movie based on the most important character in Mahabharat, the second most sacred epic of Hindus soon be on the silver screen too. Attempts have been made in the past by popular serial maker Ramanand Sagar of the 'Ramayana' fame, but in vein. Sagar did make TV serial like Ramayan and Krishna though. Besides him, famous film director Rituparmo Ghosh thought of making a movie on the same character some three years ago but didn't succeed. However, Ghosh seems to be to be determined to fulfill his cherished desire of doing a movie on 'Draupadi' the central character in Mahabharat. Unluckily, his choice to play the historical character fell on Bipasha Basu who declined it.

Then, he approached Aishwarya Rai to play Draupadi. According to reliable reports, Aish is unavailable too. Both Bips and Aish are said to have said no in view of their inability to do bold scenes as expected from them by the director. This doesn't hold water though. How can a director dare demand such bold scenes from an actor playing the historical character of Draupadi? Yes, it may be difficult for Bips to play Draupadi because of her image of a bold and sexy girl, and Aish may be too busy in her international projects. The mention of Sushmita Sen to act Draupadi is welcome. She is the excellent choice. Hopefully, Ghosh will succeed in satisfying him as well as the public by directing a long-awaited movie on 'Draupadi'. Industry circles wonder why Ghosh didn't launch B.R. Chopra's 'Mahabharat' serial's actress Draupadi!

POOJA BHATT SHEDS ADULT THEMES FOR FAIRYTALE ROMANCE

Going back behind the camera for the first time since her ill-fated directorial debut, Pooja Bhatt has abandoned adult themes for a fairytale romance. We caught up with the filmmaker and the cast of the film on the last day of the shooting.

Pooja Bhatt's 'Holiday' is over. The producer-director is shooting the last scene of her new film. Evidently inspired by the evergreen Hollywood hit, 'Dirty Dancing', Pooja's 'Holiday' is a heart-warming story of a young girl's search for her identity while on vacation, where she ends up falling hook, line and sinker for her salsa-dance instructor. The film stars newcomer Onjalee Nair and Dino Morea in pivotal roles, and a host of other actors including Nauheed Cyrusi, Kashmira Shah, Sanjeet Bedi and Gulshan Grover.

Most of the film has been shot in Goa, and when asked about the selection of the location, Pooja is quick to retort, "Whenever you think of vacation, Goa comes to our minds. So what better location than Goa for a film called 'Holiday'. Not only the filmmaker but the cast also enjoyed the destination. " Goa is absolutely lovely you don't feel like you are working there. I had a ball filming for the film," says Nauheed Cyrusi.

The lead pair is that of Dino Morea and Onjalee Nair. " I play Muskaan's character, a student who flunks twelfth grade. Her father takes her on a holiday so that she can unburden herself and overcome her failure," says Onjalee.

As far as Dino Morea goes he took special classes from Salsa instructor Sandeep Soparkar, for this film. "My salsa lessons were fun. I play a young lonely boy who loves to dance and play soccer. I am quite sad that the 'Holiday' shooting is getting over. But yes it'll soon be on the screen," says Dino.

Previous productions - 'Jism', 'Paap' and 'Rog' -- are a distant memory for Pooja Bhatt, who's making a conscious effort to move away from adult themes and erotic imagery. It's a fairytale romance this time around. "I guess, I had to think of themes which are more romantic and real, therefore this film is about ordinary people not knowing what life has in store for them or how they should live it. It's about the aspirations and celebrations of life," says Pooja.

Apart from Goa, the new and young faces, the music is also very vital in this film. The film with seven songs promises a lot of classical Latin American Ballroom dancing. "I wanted young and lively music as I am targeting audiences between age groups 16-24 years." She adds, "Music plays an important role in a film and it is a catchy soundtrack that will pull in the audience."

Scheduled for an early December release, 'Holiday', Pooja hopes will consolidate her position as a director of caliber. Her previous attempt at direction, 'Paap' brings back no fond memories for either the audience or the filmmaker.

Jackie Shroff: "I GAMBLED WITH MY CAREER BUT?"

When the world was asleep, he awoke, romancing the streets with a gang of notorious boys. From the penury of a Teenbatti ghetto to the dizzy heights of a luxury apartment complex, Jackie has seen it all. But at the end of it all, the thoroughbred gentleman has emerged a winner.

Over to our affable Jaggu for a peaceful heart-to-heart:
Q: When did you toy with the idea of getting into production?
Years back when I was shooting for 'Trimurti' I decided to make a movie. I spoke to Shah Rukh and Anil about it and suggested that the three of us could come together and make a film. Maybe it was too premature at that stage so they didn't really seem interested. But dekho na, today both of them have formed their own companies! As far as 'Grahan' is concerned, Shashilal Nair had a good subject in mind, so I got Manisha's dates and began the film.

Q: Isn't production the only avenue left for an actor who's reached the prime in his career?
I don't think so. Aamir, Shahrukh, Anil and Ajay are doing well and have all started their own production companies.

Q: Unlike other actors, you are known for your warmth and generosity. Isn't that so 'unfilmi'?
Maybe the warmth is embedded somewhere deep down in my marrow! I've taken after my mother in that way; she has this trait of going out of her way to help people. It's also the place where I come from; I've seen a lot of grief. So my heart really goes out to people and I want to help them. I may be a tough-looking guy but I'm a real softie at heart.

Q: Do you feel that a film released late loses its glitter?
Usually yes. But fortunately for me, 'Grahan' is still looking fresh. Manisha and I have excellent roles. After watching the film, Subhash Ghai said that Anupama Verma is looking not just beautiful but has actually come up to Shabana Azmi's level of acting. He also said that it's one of the best films he has seen by any actor-turned-producer.

Q: What is happening to your other production venture, 'Raju Raja Ram'?
I'm not making the film anymore. I've given it off to somebody as I could not manage to get the combination dates of Salman and the other actors.

Q: Do you feel that you've been unlucky so far as a producer?
No. I think I've been very lucky to survive despite the difficult times and get out of it. I completed my next film, 'Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai' in no time and plan to release it soon.

Q: We believe that Rinke Khanna is looking hot and glamorous in 'Jis Desh Mein?.'?
Rinke is a wonderful girl. Despite being a star kid, she has no airs about her. We needed someone like her for the project and Mahesh (Manjrekar) has extracted the best out of her.

Q: In between you had signed a bagful of Mithun films that gave you a downmarket image. Why did you do those films?
When I was making 'Grahan' I ran into some unforeseen problems. So I gambled with my career and started signing Mithunda's films and a cartload of others to make both ends meet. I may have earned a lot of flak for it but I ended up learning things like how to be cost-effective and how to complete a film on time. Anyway, though I had started my career with a big banner film like Subhash Ghai's 'Hero', I did a lot of B-grade films in between like 'Izzat', 'Doodh Ka Karz', 'Hafta Bandh' and 'Police Officer' which gave my career a boost. Unfortunately for me, an A-grade film like 'Trimurti' did not work wonders for my career. I've always had a mix of A & B grade films to support me. In that way I've catered to the downmarket and upmarket crowd.

Q: Somewhere you had made a remark that if other film stars can dance on stage and at weddings, what's wrong if you did Mithun films?
I've never said that.

Q: If given a lucrative offer, would you dance at a wedding?
(laughs) I don't know how to dance!

Q: Now you are featuring in some of the best banners in character roles. How do you feel about it?
My good times have come now. I'm playing a bad guy in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 'Mission Kashmir'. I enjoy doing character roles but it's not that I've started doing them now. I've been doing it right from '1942- A Love Story.' It's just that people began noticing them now. I played Sharad Kapoor's father in 'Vishwavidhata' because he insisted I do it. I'm fine about playing a lover boy, father, older guy, bad guy; I have no hang-ups whatsoever. I'm not the finicky type who insists on having all the five songs on him. Besides, I've always done double-hero projects with good actors like Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Sunny Deol.

Q: Why was it that in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's films like 'Parinda' and '1942-A Love Story', Anil Kapoor got the girl while you were left out?
Who said I got left out? I won awards for both these films!

Q: What are your future plans?
I want to do a lot of public service like social films and blood donation. I also want to look into Thalassemia- a genetic disease that can be avoided by proper blood tests. I want to work more on my web site, www.jackieshroff.com, so that it reaches out to people all over the world. I'd like to make at least one film in a year.

Interview: MAMTA KULKARNI-THE AFTERMATH

Ensconced on a comfy pouffe, the raven-haired beauty stares disconcertingly, as if she is angry at the whole world. So Mamta Kulkarni ko gussa kyon aata hai?

Is it because of the not too exciting state of her career or are the China Gate wounds still raw? This was when she had accused director Raj Kumar Santoshi of harassment and faced the flak from the entire movie industry. Not to mention her role being slashed to nothing.

Q: Are the China Gate wounds yet fresh as coleslaw?

I haven't forgiven, but forgotten. It doesn't make sense to live with a nightmare.

Q:One hasn't seen your releases after China Gate?

There were countless films I refused, because my role wasn't substantial. I turned down Mr.& Mrs. Khiladi, Aunty No.1, Dulhe Raja, Davaa, Bandhan, Aflatoon, Sapoot and Hogi Pyar Ki Jeet because my role wasn't really substantial. All of them were subsequently palmed off to other actresses. I didn't want to spend my life just attending muhurats and sweating in studios over something inconsequential.

Q: Do you repent refusing them?

I felt bad turning down those offers primarily because I'm grateful to all the producers who considered me. I can't help it, but those roles were just not happening; you know what I mean! But I'd definitely like to work with them in future. I've always respected my producer and stood by him. Do you know I gave China Gate 200 shifts; and look what happened. It wasn't wise to put all my eggs in one basket.

Q: And boy, didn't you make your displeasure amply evident!

See, I'm not a person who talks for effect or for the heck of it. I can't cook up scoops or controversial vignettes to remain in the news. Every word comes straight from my heart. People say I shoot my mouth too often but flipping through magazines, I feel I give the most honest interviews. Somehow, if you lie it comes across. As far as China Gate is concerned, I said whatever I had to, because it was a genuine denial of justice and I stand by every word of it. Today if someone complains that I'm undisciplined or difficult to work with, it's a lie. If you see my track record, several producers have repeated me; Umesh Mehra, Sajid Nadiadwala, Mehul Kumar. I'm a thorough professional who accords top priority to my work.

Q: But today there's a Rani and Preity mania. Everyone seems to be gaga over them.

See, Rani and Preity, both, are extremely talented and good-looking women. But all this euphoria is just a phase in the industry. Whenever any newcomer gives one or two hits, the herd mentality is to run after them and create a fuss, and when you're on a low, the same people desert you. What they are going through now was exactly what I experienced on joining this industry. I remember being on cloud nine after my initial films fared well. I was on the top during 1993, 1994, and 1995. Then came Manisha's phase with Bombay and then Kajol's with Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge. It was fun handling success at 20. But after a while, you settle down and come to grips with reality.

Q: What do you think has worked in Kajol's case?

She's spontaneous and natural. Most importantly, she's worked with one or two right directors and done the right films.

Q: Reportedly, you've become like Aamir Khan, extremely particular about hearing your script and role.

I've turned down at least two dozen films in the last few days. I've done enough work establishing me as a star and good-looking actress. I'm more inclined towards good-n-healthy cinema now. I was inundated with congratulatory calls for Naseeb. I still maintain that if publicized, the film would have fared well. If my power-packed scenes in China Gate had been retained, it would have been another performance to boast about. Honestly, today I'm working for myself; for my personal satisfaction. I don't have a point to prove to anyone else. I don't want to show people that I'm doing three shifts a day. I don't want to do stuff to look busy. I'm keen on doing few films but the right ones. It's so sad that when people ask an actress, "What is your best work till date?", she has to say, "It's yet to come."

Q: But most of your contemporaries, the present genre of actresses, don't really bother about a role or script.

They sign any film that comes their way?it depends from person to person. If you're desperate to amass work in quantitative terms, then it's fine to embark on a signing spree. The short-term gains are amazing, but in the long run you get type-casted and ruined. I'm not desperate to have hundred films in my kitty; otherwise I would not have turned down the ones offered to me in recent weeks. If quantity was my criteria, I could have called Mithun and asked him to sign me on for all his films. He's a dear friend..

Q: So what are your plans now?

I'm working on a couple of well-scripted projects like Thoda Sa Pyaar being directed by Bipash Mukherjee. There is Dev Anand's Censor. There are three or four superb projects under negotiation; including an international flick with Jagmohan Mundhra. There are offers for regional films as well. Gimme a break yaar, I'm 25 and have a career of at least another ten years waiting to unfold itself. I can't sit and pine and whine over one year going badly.

Q: Today no actress is really doing well. What reason would you attribute for their failure?

The actresses themselves are to blame. By accepting minuscule stuff, we're underplaying our worth. (Laughs) I don't intend to carry out some kind of a revolution, but if you stop getting greedy and put your foot down, I'm sure things will improve.

Q: After your link-ups with Aamir, Salman, Govinda and Akshay Kumar, why is there no man in Mamta's life?

(Laughs) Gosh, I don't believe I have to clarify this. Aamir and I are on great terms and share a healthy working relationship. Aamir has a habit of breaking the barrier with his co-stars so that the film-set is more like a family rather than a boring professional set-up. I'm extremely fond of him, but the media has misconstrued this for obsession! During Karan Arjun, Salman was a mischief-maker. He would always pull my leg, because I was a serious girl more into her work than the goings on around the set. I was a tad irritated at first, but then got along with him like fire. I'm doing two films with him now. Govinda and I have done three films together. You're bound to get close to your co-star when you're working with him day and night. I was pretty young when I did Sabse Bada Khiladi. You know it was a case of a girlish fetish! I must have made a remark to the effect that Akshay's handsome; and tongues got wagging. As of now, I'm single.

Q:Is that an announcement for eligible candidates to apply?

Don't be silly. My career is of utmost importance.
