Owen settled at Man United
Manchester United striker Michael Owen has dismissed suggestions he is unhappy at Old Trafford amid reports he will be sold in the summer.
The 30-year-old joined Sir Alex Ferguson's side at the start of the season after leaving Newcastle as a free agent, but he has been restricted to a fringe role.
Wayne Rooney's form and niggling injuries, with a latest fitness setback coming in Sunday's Carling Cup final win, have been the cause for Owen's limited chances.
That lack of playing time has led to rumours that the forward and United could agree that it would be best to part company at the end of the season, but the former has insisted he is more than happy.
"I am loving it at Manchester United," Owen said. "There are plenty of people who want to put negative spins on things.
"I have four kids, I am living at home and playing for one of the best teams in Europe. It is not all doom and gloom is it?
"We still have the Premier League and the Champions League to play for, which I have never won so I have every reason to have a smile on my face."
The hamstring injury Owen sustained after scoring United's equaliser in their 2-1 win over Aston Villa is expected to sideline the ex-Liverpool star for several weeks once a scan, which is expected to take place on Tuesday, confirms the damage.
But the 89-time England cap, whose faint World Cup hopes have now probably been crushed following his pre-half-time exit in front of a watching Fabio Capello, is content that Ferguson has implied his debut season with United has been positive.
"I am very pleased the manager is suggesting I have done well in my first season," he said.
"The way Wayne has played this season has been fantastic.
"In any other year he might have picked up an injury or been suspended and I would have got more games." |

City financiers investigate takeover of Man Utd

March 1, 2010
A group of well-connected Manchester United supporters have played the first hand of their attempts to wrest control of the club from the unpopular Glazer family's regime. The American owners have been moved to issue an instant rebuttal by again declaring they have no interest in selling the club.
Reports from Sky News and the Times suggest talks have been held on London's Fleet Street between a group of leading City of London figures, the so-called "Red Knights". Keith Harris, of Seymour Pierce, football takeover experts, has joined with Jim O'Neill, chief economist at Goldman Sachs.
Both Harris and O'Neill have expressed dissent against the American family's financial model, which has seen a club that was debt-free and profitable in 2005, the year of the Glazer takeover, plummet to debts of around £700 million and the need to sell Cristiano Ronaldo for £81 million in the summer of 2009 to turn an operating profit ahead of a £500 million bond scheme launched in January.
The talks are reported to have taken place at the offices of Mark Rawlinson, a partner in Freshfields' corporate practice, who advised United on its takeover by the Glazers in 2005 with Finsbury, a leading PR firm, also linked with the group.
Sunday's Carling Cup final saw fans adorned in the green and gold colours of Newton Heath, United's precursor club, adopted by the anti-Glazer fans' groups and many banners denouncing the club's owners and chief executive David Gill were also on show at Wembley.
Harris last week called for fans to boycott the club by refusing to buy season tickets for the 2010-11 season, which could cause United's owners to sweat on their finely balanced business plan. The Glazer family have been moved by the rumours to issue a terse "not for sale" response to the speculation. Harris, and others, believe the Florida-based family would sell at the right price - believed to be around the £1 billion mark when the original 2005 price was £790 million - or if their plans began to be disrupted by a lack of cash flow.
The Glazers, meanwhile, despite steepling repayments on their business loans, have bought themselves a degree of security through the bond scheme and any takeover would seem to be a long way off being in any imminent. Members of the family were at Wembley to watch United overcome Aston Villa. |

United reports financial upturn
Tue, 02 Mar 16:30:55 2010
Manchester United's owners have strengthened their financial position despite the protests against them after releasing figures showing increases in revenue and profits.
With a group of financiers called the Red Knights confirming their interest in a possible takeover, the Glazer family can point to a rising turnover and profits at the club.
The figures for the six months up to December show turnover up 19% to £144.7million from £121.7million for the equivalent period in 2008. The club's debt dropped from £538.1million to £507.5million and there were increases recorded in matchday revenues, TV money - particularly from the Champions League - and commercial revenue.
Media revenues have increased 33% from £40.3million to £53.4million and commercial revenues up 16% from £33.5million to £38.7million.
The total debt of the Red Football Ltd, the Glazers' holding company for Manchester United, was registered at £716.5million at the start of the year.
It has led to a renewed protest of the Glazer family's ownership of the club.
In the latest development, Goldman Sachs economist Jim O'Neill - acting in a personal capacity - lawyer Mark Rawlinson and merchant banker Keith Harris have launched the Red Knight group and discussed a potential takeover. |

Gilberto claims Rooney is up there with world superstars such as Lionel Messi, Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The veteran midfielder, who moved to Panathinaikos from Arsenal two years ago, said: "You can now say Wayne Rooney is in the same bracket as stars like Messi, Kaka and Ronaldo.
"Year by year he becomes better and better with the experience he has and I am sure he can do a lot for England this summer.
"All the Brazil squad regard Rooney as one of the stars in the making at the World Cup, especially if we have to face England."

Gill: Fergie has cash to splash!
According to Manchester United chief executive David Gill, Sir Alex Ferguson has £80million to spend in the summer.
This was the amount United received from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo last summer.
United's owners the Glazer family counted the income from Ronaldo's sale as contributing to their profits last year but Gill said the money was still there for Ferguson in the form of cash in the bank.
Gill also told the Red Knights group of wealthy fans they are wasting their time trying to buy the club.
He told the Soccerex conference in Manchester: "We are looking at players all the time, the money from Ronaldo is sitting there in the bank account, we have been clear on that.
"But Alex has been very clear he is not going out to chase and overpay for a player just because everyone else thinks we should. He's a Scot, he wants value for money.
"We have spent a lot of money on Chris Smalling [from Fulham] and that's the sort of player we want to bring in - a young player who we feel will develop as a player and hopefully give us service for many, many years to come.
"Alex is very comfortable with it. He would not be shy in saying he wasn't comfortable and we need to buy a player. We are a successful team and the way it's moved on since Cristiano left after six very successful years with us demonstrated why he's comfortable with what he's got."
Gill insisted the Glazer family do not want to sell the club, said they are running it "in the right way", defended the owners' £709million total debt and questioned the practicality of the Red Knights' plans for a takeover.
He also branded merchant banker Keith Harris, a key member of the group who has called for a fan boycott of United matches, as a "publicity seeker" and was scathing about his track record in football takeovers.
Gill said: "The Glazers have given no indication to me that they want to sell and in that case they cannot buy the asset, it's not for sale.
"The Glazers have no wish to sell and from our perspective they are running the club in the right way."
Gill accepted that some of those involved in Red Knights were credible but was scathing about Harris, who has been involved in a number of takeover bids of top-flight clubs.
He said: "We are aware of Jim O'Neill [Goldman Sachs economic adviser] in that he was on our board before the takeover, Mark Rawlinson was our adviser at Freshfields [law firm].
"Keith Harris will go anywhere there is publicity around, we know that and we accept that, that's his modus operandi but if you looks at his track record in football I don't think it's anything to write home about."
Gill also questioned how a Red Knights' takeover would work at United.
He added: "The Red Knights proposal, the idea of having 20, 30 or 40 very wealthy people running Manchester United, I don't know how it would work in practice.
"The better run clubs are where there is clear single decision-making and it's quick and efficient - Abramovich at Chelsea, Mansour at Manchester City, Berlusconi at AC Milan. The key decision-making at Real Madrid is not by all those fans but by the president and the same goes at Barcelona.
"Having a number of wealthy people involved - they will all want to be involved in decision-making.
"I'm not sure what their end game is but the end game is irrelevant.
"The vast majority of the fans of Manchester United should be comfortable with what we are doing in terms of pushing the club forward and success on the pitch and making sure that we continue at the top of European and world football."

I'll be back, says Owen

Michael Owen has expressed his disappointment at being forced to miss the rest of the campaign with a hamstring injury - but the Reds striker has pledged to be back in peak condition next season.
The United no.7 will undergo an operation to repair his injured hamstring on Monday, but he says that he has enjoyed "every minute" of being a United player, and that will spur him on in his recovery.
"Unfortunately, the specialist says I will miss the end of the season," he told ManUtd.com.
"I have loved every minute of my first campaign with United and have already enjoyed some memorable moments," he said.
"I am determined to come back at the start of next season in peak condition."
The injury is desperately disappointing for Owen, and United, as he looked particularly sharp against Aston Villa in the Carling Cup final before the injury forced him off the field.
It also ends the striker's hopes of making this summer's World Cup in South Africa, but missing out on playing for United is also at the forefront of his mind. |
